View Full Version : Luck w/ Cheap Clipless Pedals?
Anyone using any of the cheaper clipless pedals - like some of the Wellgo models? Thoughts/impressions?

All I know is, if they're not "egg beaters", they'll gunk up. Got Specialized Mtb shoes and Shimano SPD pedals and it seems every time I hit some mud I have a heck of a time clipping in and out.Not a problem though unless you plan on doing some muddin'
I should have been more specific...
I have SPDs on one of my main rides, and SPD cleats on my one pair of riding shoes. I'm lookin' for cheap SPD compatible pedals to add clipless to another bike (or two maybe). Wellgo makes quite a few cheap pedals that will work with the SH-51 cleats I have on my shoes, and I was wondering if anyone has tried 'em.
Not looking to start the Eggbeaters vs Time vs SPD debate - I've been running SPD for over 10 years and haven't had any problems.

No experience w/Wellgos, but I have a set of Shimano 520s that I'm really happy with. At $50, they're not too spendy either. They use the same design as the 540s and the 959s.

My GT came with cheap wellgo's (actually I don't think that's what it was supposed to come with, I think E's swapped them).
Anyway they sucked in mud (don't get excited, just mud picked up on the raft), and they wore out in one season, pretty much just fell apart.
I can second the opinion on the cheap shimano's though, I have some M515's or something that came on my road bike, I rode them for a while before I switch to Time, they worked pretty well and held up, but in retrospect also blew in any mud.
Not sure what state they are in, but you can have them if you want.
Thanks for the offer Pat, but my impatience got the best of me.
I found some Shimano 424's for $39.99 at Jenson - I have these on another bike and really like them, so I couldn't pass it up.

[edit]: Really of topic, but the FSSS's days are numbered...
I also picked up a Surly 1x1 fork today - kinda sick of the 12 year old Mag 21.
The FSSS will soon be the RFRSPCXSS
Performance has some eggbeaters for ~ $50.00 "Crank Brothers Eggbeater – Chromoly"

I second the 520 motion.
For $50 they are hard to beat, and adjustable too.

I've used Ritcheys for a long time. I think they are better than the Shimanos and their knock-offs. I've got them for road, mountain biking, and cyclocross, and they've held up OK in the mud. There are certainly some better designs for mud, like Eggbeaters and Time ATACs, but the price point never seemed worth it.
Pedals are one of those things I've had a hard time in spending lots of money, like stems and handlebars too. It just doesn't make sense to me that people will pay over $100 for these items.

I have some SPD's that I bought for $25 or something that I'd be willing to part with.

Rigid Front, Rear Suspended Psuedo-Cyclocross Singlespeed
The PCX part is kind of a stretch... semi-drop bars and "city" tires.
It just made the acronym longer. :)

To quote my 7-year old... "That looks funky!"
How's it handle with the drop bars?

I'm trying it out tonight... leaving for Wirth very soon. Hopefully I have time to do a lap before trailwork.

That's quite the monster you've created...Run, Run for your lives!!!
How's it handle with the drop bars?
I only got the chance to ride the northbound trail of the southern loop at Wirth. It handled surprisingly well. I'll try it again next week.

...Jeebus bless and Allah speed. A rigid front and URT suspended rear makes about as much sense as a Slingshot so go figure.
Love the uniqueness though.
No URT here.
Rocker Tuned Suspension all the way baby!
It's pretty darn fast on the road too. Seems like the suspension kinda gives it a boost when you are really cranking on the road (kinda like the Slingshot from what I've read).
