I would say first and foremost you need to go a shop and try a couple on. I would even go as far to say talk to a shop employee and have them make a recommendation. Helmets really are only as good as how they fit you head. I personally have a Giro E2. I absolutly swear by the ventilation, fit and style. When looking for a lid some things to look for are: padding, adjustablity of fit, vent/ventilation (you loose a lot of the heat through your head), if you want a visor or not, and of course how awsome you look in it. I buy helmets I want to wear, not that i'm forced to wear.

I bought my wife a Specialized Telluride for about that price last summer. I like it so much that I 'steal' it when I go off road

I used to have a couple of specialized helmets. They were good for the price (60 or less). I have a Giro E2 now, it's a bit more, but worth it (for me, anyway).

I'm a specialized freak, always was... always will be. They are very adjustable and comfortable to wear. Most models are pretty cool looking as well, plus they can handle a decent head plant.

i'd have to say giro is the way to go, they have always been comfy and dependable.
