Just got back from there and It was pretty moderate. Only open on Mystery mountain, only uses mystery lift. Lots of rocks, the black diamond runs had lots of rocks gardens and roots. The blue runs have nice fast double track with a small rock jump that fun to mess around on. Besides all that the only drag is the lift which takes like 20 min. to get up. I dont think it was worth $36 though.

I was up at Lutsen a few weeks ago... and I had a pretty good time. It was my first time riding there, so having just the Mystery Chair didn't really phase me. Complain all you want about the 20 min. chair ride, but I kinda liked it... nice and relaxing... and it's still a lot faster (and easier) than pushing a 42 lb bike to the top.

I agree, the steep, rocky stuff and the fast, open doubletrack was a lot of fun - the closest thing to riding out west that I've seen around here.

I don't know what you spent 36 bucks on, but I rode for $24 ($26 dollar MTB trail/lift pass plus a $2 coupon that you can get out of any brochure about the tram/lifts).

Overall I'd go back if I was in the area for other reasons... but it isn't worth the drive from the cities just for mountain biking.

I just got back from Lutsen as well and had a great time. The weather was perfect and tickets are only $25 if you stay at the lodging on site. Also they have fun trails that my girl friend enjoys riding.

Hey Buck, Are the lifts running up at Spirit on weekends?

Nope, I am still working to make it happen, but not being in the area is starting to make that hard. As far as trails go, the stuff at Spirit in both the XC and DH are far above what Lutsen has to offer, it is on the way to Lutsen to bad people are missing on a killer little hidden gem of a riding scene up there.

Expect more info as I recieve it. One more race up there is still a possibility. I also have some more big things coming up for the FR world in MN in the future...just takes time.

Good deal. Thanks for the all the hard work. Spirit is close enough to the cities for a day trip. Hope to check it in the near future.

I guess you probably have to convince them that they will be able to recover the expense of running that char lift. So to do that you need to have numbers of people riding the trail (mulitply by $$ to ride the lift and they have something on which to base the decision).

Do any of you guys have a used Santa Cruz Bullit with a Marz. Shiver fork? Cuz I saw a guy there that had one that was probably a member on MORC. Also talked to him, pretty cool guy.

Just FYI regarding this post. When I was up there I talked to some employees who told that me that 2 of the owners bought out the other 2 (they had four owners). He told me that they had plans on the table to open more and better trails but needed to iron out kinks first like reorganizing ownership. Who knows if they will get better trails but at least they're talking about improving the ones they have and making new ones. They have the fricking land and potential for it that's for sure.

We just got back from Winter Park, CO and only paid $22 a day for a high speed quad with over 1,700ft of vertical!!!

I understand economics, but......... it just doesn't seem right!

Planning a trip to Winter Park September 6-13. The lifts will be closed by then which means me and my buddy will have to climb to earn our decents. We will also ride in the Fraser valley as well.

A few questions.
1)Any advice on adjusting to the altitude?
2) How technical are the trials compared to places around here. I rode the MNSCS circuit this year so I am familiar with Memorial, Mt. Kato, Welch Village, Afton etc.
3) Are there any trails you recommend? Not really interested in serious black diamond stuff. Looking for a good physical challenge with moderate to difficult technical challenges.
4) Where can you get a good beer and burger in Winter Park?

Thanks,

Keith

Nah that has been done, the economics of it are quite simple and alot lower then what people would expect, they just went through a major changing of the guard up there, so now it is back to hacking through all the political BS and getting the new manager in for a sit down talk! It'll happen just I am super busy with a ton of things that all kind of fell on my lap in the last like two weeks.

I was out at Steam boat this spring before the lifts opened, so it was climb and descend deal. For me, it was the sustain nature of the climbing and not the altitude that was an issue. One of the trails I hit was a 4 mile 1300 ft climb. I simple could not maintain the type of pace I try to keep up on the local climbs around here. I guess setting a sustainable pace is best thing that I learned from pacing off of local riders the second ride out there.

I've been going to Lutsen for the last 10 years or so. I just noticed a DH course. Didn't check it out but was wondering if any has? How is it? Is there a plan to make it larger?

Went to Lutsen last weekend. Pretty good shape. Still a bummer Moose Mtn is closed, but there are some good runs on Mystery.
