What are the dates this year? I don't think I'll be racing but I'd like to attend. The last two years I have been tied up and hopefully this year my luck will change.

I might be doing it solo. I figure since we're doing all the work on the trails, I might just as well ride them. The course will be fun with some of the new stuff we have added. If I don't ride it, I'll be there people watching.

Is there a SS class for Afton 24hr? If so....what might be a good gearing?

I am planning on being there. Not sure if I am going team or solo. I guess it depends on what we set up with BCR again. I plan to ride singlespeed, which might just put me as a solo rider......not sure yet.
This is a super fun event, it's worth it to hang out, even if you don't race.

If you're interested... there are two of us that might ride Afton on singlespeeds. I might be able to pull one more also, to make a team of 4.

There is an SS class. This site will give you an idea of what gearing is good for which trail. All I know is that Afton has one climb, Whistler, that is a holy terror. There were guys who could scream up it with no trouble, while I walked the damn thing. I had thoughts of using my SS last year, but a training lap a few weeks prior to the race fixed that. I'll probably bring it this year since I'm going solo and can take it easy. It's a built in excuse for walking my lazy carcass again. "I'm solo, so I'm (Dr. Evil quotes here) conserving energy." It's really cool seeing all the headllights working their way around the course at night and to hear "Marco...Polo" at 3:00 AM. If you don't race, at least show up and people watch like Troy.

I'll be there. Somebody might be able to talk me into racing, don't know about riding the single but would be looking for a team that wants to have fun and enjoy the event. I have never raced and if I keep putting off buying another vehicle should be able to race in the coveted second to last place position.

I rode it last year with a 34:22. It wasn't too bad, but my mind might have blocked out the trauma too much to remember it fully.

Are there any people thinking about forming a random team that's just in it to have fun and ride? I am thinking of doing this race, but don't have a team to be on. I'm a decent rider but by no means a fast racer. If anyone is interested...just post up.

I was definately thinking we should register before the 12th (not only for the t-shirt, but its cheaper too). Tom isn't racing though, so I'm hoping that Travis' partner from 9-mile pulls through.
As for pre-riding the course, I was hoping we could get a lap in on race day (a few houres before the race) and if not, we should definately make it out one of the upcoming weekends.

If you guys are interested in preriding there, I suggest you don't do it the day of the race. I would gladly lead you around the course next week sometime early in the afternoon.
You are going to want to ride the trail sooner than later so you can step up the training program and prepare yourself for torture. Monday-Wednesday 4pm works for me. It is $7 to ride there last time I checked. It would be cool to see the changes they made too.
Magic
08-03-2005, 09:25 AM
If you are going to preride the 24 hr. course, follow the red poles with the orange arrows on them. Where there isn't an arrow, follow the orange markings painted on the grass. This will take you on the 24 hr. course. Yes it is still 7.00 to ride out at Afton. Ride the new sections with a little caution, they are very "virgin", need people to ride them to seat in the tread. Have fun and be safe.

Look for a husky bald guy on a red Santa Cruz Superlight or Rocky Mountain Blizzard. We can draft one another around the course :D! We'll put this "Who's in worse shape" argument to rest when we get to the first hill and I blow up, throw up and almost give up.

I'm gonna suck this year. I havn't done hardly any hill climbing so far this year because I spent nearly the last two months in a place where hills don't exist and two months before that I was there for another three months. Not to mention a month and a half off my bike from injuries and waiting for that shock. I don't know..gonna have to eat a lot of banans to keep those leg cramps away this year.
Anyway..I'm starting off early on my excuses. That way if I suck it's already out there that I had problems leading from way back and if I do actually do well I look so much better for over coming so many obsticles.

For you guys coming from the southern suburbs, you can take the shortcut to Afton. Take 494 to Baily Road and follow Baily east till it intersect's Manning Ave, also known as County 15. Take Manning south to 50th street and take a left onto 50th. 50th street will take you to Afton Alps, this is where you pay to ride the trails. Go into the golfing clubhouse and get banded like the animals that you are. I hope this little shortcut helps some of you. Watch out for the construction down in New Port, there might be some detours. Have fun on the trails and let me know what you guys think of them.

There's a cash machine at the clubhouse, plus water and powerade and food.

For you guys coming from the southern suburbs, you can take the shortcut to Afton. Take 494 to Baily Road and follow Baily east till it intersect's Manning Ave, also known as County 15. Where along the route approx. does it intersect with Baily Road?
EDIT: Nevermind, GOOGLE helped me find it.

Just rode Afton yesterday and met Larry (i was on the red Epic), the keeper of the course. Those of you who are riding the 24 hour race have a GREAT course to look forward to. The course is FAST and in great shape. The new sections add a great deal to the course! Watch out for part of the rerouted meadows section where you go under the pipe, it is a bit soft and narrow and I fell off to the side at one point. But with some riding on it, it will firm up and be just fine. I LOVE the cement berm! Just rail around it with great vengence and furious anger!
Just wanted to again send a shout out to Larry and all the people who work on the trails there. Your work and efforts are much appreciated and I for one am very thankful!

I believe there is day-of-race registration for those of us still indecisive. Correct?

Yes, raceday registration is allowed. If you can E-mail in your info in advance to aftoninfo@att.net that would help greatly - we will collect the fee at the event site.

I'm down with Theo I guess. It'll be a change and we can just do a couple laps or something. I need to stop at home and pick up my stuff, so how does 5:30 sound?

Faceless- I'm thinking we are all on our own for food. I have tools, a stand, and other essentials. Just bring what ya got and be ready to ride. I should be there around 2 or 3pm. I'll leave my bikes (orange Klein and green Bianchi) on top of my car so you can find me. I'll be setting up camp.

Go past the golf clubhouse on the main road, to where it ends. There will be some outbuildings in front of you. Take the left and go down a long steep hill. Can't miss it. There are 2 chalets and you'll want the second one. Man, I'm gettin' all nervous and wound up. I'm going to burn through any adrenaline I have just anticipating. This is going to be a blast.

Drive past the golf clubhouse, the road will go down a massive hill to the left and drive to the second chalet. I dont have cell service once i go down the hill so just look for me. You'll beat me there so how do i find you?
