View Full Version : wild dogs or wolves in the park?

I was on the side of the park closest to the highway today. I stopped for a quick water break. While I’m standing there a I hear police car sirens off in the distance. Then I hear howling, like a dog or wolf, a lot of them! I was standing the single track at the edge of that big open grassy area and it sounded like they were everywhere around me. I was just wondering if anyone knows what they are and should I be worried about meeting one?
Also, I ended up getting a flat right after that. No patch kit or pump so I had to walk from one side of the part to the other. Walking sucks!

Wouldn't have been Wolves down this far south, especially in the city. Might have been a bunch of Coyotes. They'll get into quite a howling mood once in awhile.
I agree with Ryan. Probably wasn't wolves. It could've been police dogs looking for a body or something. This is Battle Creek, crazier things have happened. ;)

Last week 7/22, i saw the same thing. I stopped and tried to see what exactly they were. The one i saw was big and watched from just behind some bushes. I thought i saw at least two "BIG" dogs. I looked for an owner and never saw one. I got nervous and went the other way to the hairpin on the bluff. I came back up by the highway and didn't see them .

So should I be worried about these things? I hear them around my house at night sometimes but never seen what they are.
Could be just local residents pets. I have two dogs, and every time a cop car goes by my place with the sirens on they both start with the howling. It's sort of funny, except when you're trying to sleep, then it just flat out pisses me off.

I'am not sure. My second lap on that side i saw no signs of the dogs. I'll be there this weekend and keep my eyes open.

Bill,
When are ya riding this weekend? I'd be interested in riding. Not sure if I could hang with ya but I could always try!
well farell(sp?)/wild dogs and cats are becoming a problem in MN and actually it is already legal to shoot farell(sp?) cats (I would imagine it is the same for dogs but I'm not totally sure)...so I guess if you see 'em take 'em down. I would. Otherwise don't worry about coyots, no biggie they'd run before they attacked in all likely hood, unless they were trapped or cornered.

Troy, take it easy out at Battle Creek. I was there last night and with all the heavy rain we've had it is rutted out bad in places. I wouldn't want to hear about your wife taking a digger. You on the other hand, that's a different story.:D Have fun out there. If you feel like climbing, come out to Afton. I'll get you some trail passes to go and ride the fun trails we are working on. Either way, have a good ride this weekend.

Thanks for the heads up Troy. Will definitely be selective with the choice of trails. Don't want to scare her on her first trip to Battle Creek if we do end up going there.
Thanks for all the work at Afton. I'm going to have to make it out there to help one of these days. :)

Hey Scott, I'am working sat. so i'am not sure when i'am going to bc. I would say sunday morn. if all goes well. I would definitely be following you . I'am not sure what tires work best at BC right now. There is alot of loose stuff. Last time i ran at about 45psi , on IRC Mythos. I think i need more grip up front. What do you think? Thanks for the timely delivery , safety flags are a hot item, really.

On Saturday I saw a guy on his mountain bike being chased by a pit bull while I was stretching at the rec center trailhead. The biker was doing his best to keep the bike between him and the pit bull while yelling many explicatives at the dog's owner for not following leash laws, especially with that kind of breed (if it even is a breed)!

it is walking because you didn't have what you needed to fix a flat that sucks!
I have no idea about the howling as I have yet to hear it...

Okay, THAT made me laugh harder than anything else today. Wow.
Thanks.
BTW, I'm checking with a friend of mine who works out in Theodore Roosevelt Natl Park to try to find out about the cougar situation. I hope they didn't end up destroying it. That kinda thing makes me sad. We're in HIS home (or former home, however the case may be), and yet, he's the one that has to go. :(
I'm planning a trip out there this summer, too. My family's not too far (couple hours), and I haven't been to the badlands since I was in high school. I'd like to experience them on a bike, rather than in the stands of the Medora Musical. Ugh.
If I find anything out, I'll post it.

Cripes, I got so distracted laughing at the dingo comment that I got my cougar and wild dogs threads mixed up. I was reading them both tonight.
Sorry! Idiot newbie posting a reply to the wrong discussion.
Been a long day with very little sleep last night.

It's all cool. Most of the threads on this board refer to other threads. It's all a big stew of bike mish mash with a touch of beer and politics to give it that zing.
