------------- Race Report ---------------------------
What: Greenman Downhill
Where: Spirit Mountain Duluth, Minnesota
When: July 16th 2005 - 3:00pm

by Pete Koski

The 2005 Greenman DH was an awsome event. By most accounts one of the coolest DH races ever in Minnesota, maybe the midwest. Big thanks goes out to Adam Buck for doing all the leg work and making this event happen. Without him, it wouldn't have went down like it did.

Race day saw cool tempertures and hazy skys give way to sun and a nice cool breeze off the lake. It rained briefly the night before, making practice in the morning a little slick, but by the 3pm start time, the course was in great shape and super fast; overall a perfect day for racing.

The course started at the top of the Spirit's Summit Chair and wound its way down to its base, using all of the available 700 feet of vertical the hill had to offer. The course started with a steep drop-in off the chair lift where it flew down the grassy ski hill into a nice size jump that was a crowd favorite. Following this a tricky triple set of rollers near the main lodge tested many a suspension's quality and riders' prowess. After that the course rolled over onto the main face of the ski hill and plunged into the first of many technical wooded sections. The rockier, more technical sections made up the upper sections, and after a quick traverse of a couple ski runs, the lower sections emphasized berms, drops, and smooth, fast flowing lines, with a few rocky areas sprinkled in to keep racers on their toes.

The race field was composed of about 32 riders ranging from as young as 44 to 13 years of age. A huge contingent of Canucks made it down from the Thunder Bay area, helping to make this event as fun as it was, without them, the field would have been about half the size. Go Canada! The rest of the field was made up of Minnesota locals and maybe one or two Wisconsin kids that I know of.

The format was simple; King of the Hill. After every round the field got cut in half, with the faster half advancing to the next round, until a winner was determined. Run times only counted for the current round, so with every new round, each racer had to make an honest effort to advance. To keep things interesting, after the field was narrowed down to the top eight riders, the semi-final round then narrowed the field to the fastest five. These five riders then advanced to the "money round" where they got to duke it out for their share of the $500 purse.

In the end MPLS local Thor Shellum took top honors, followed by Mankato's Beau Layman in 2nd and Blaine's Tracy McConkey nailing down third.

Thanks to Spirit Mtn for letting us race there and for use of the lift. Also thanks go out all the trail workers, timers, liftees, and of course the racers who showed to make this event such a great time. Sepcial thanks go to:
- Colin @ QBP for all the schwag.
- Beau for the reCYCLE (http://www.geocities.com/beau_layman/1.html) awards.
- Rod for the cash purse.
- Gretchen for the top-notch timing setup.

(If anybody knows who the unknown rider numbers are let me know and I'll edit them in. -PK)

. . . the crazy Canuck who was rocking the light blue shorts & jersey.

Thanks to all the organizers for a great race and to all the racers for welcoming the Ontario contingent. We have a great time and expect to be back next year, but we'll be faster and have more riders.

By the way, to you guys who were griping about early practice . . . Rider #18 - Matt Pavlik raced the 24 mile XC event, then DH practice, then raced the DH, and capped it off with a couple hours of skate park sessioning early this morning. I wasn't even racing and had a hard time keeping up with him. A 17 year old ironman!!

yeah, glad you guys came down. Now we'll have to get a Minnesota crew to come up for the DH race in August! I'm planning to race that, dunno about everyone else.

Thanks guys, found it right away...

Nice job Adam, looks like the best DH ever at Spirit.

We raced there quite a bit BITD - '95 maybe? You would have laughed at the bikes though, mine was one of the longer travel bikes - a 3 1/2" Trophy/Lawill.

The last DH race at Spirit had a pretty big purse - I think it was $1000 all together - Erik Kilonen (sp) won both the DH and DS that day - punk :D

yeah, we should go scope out a possible freeride run. I'm out of town until next monday, but after that I'm here the rest of the summer.
