I am planning to ride Memorial on saturday morning, if anyone is interested. I have a wedding to go to in Red Wing at 3pm so i would most likely ride around 10am. Give me a shout if anyone is up for a ride.

Porter,

I may be able to make it. I have some other plans that are still in the maybe stage, but if they fall through at all I'll be there (not that I'll be able to keep up at all). I won't be able to be up there until about 10:15-10:30 as I need to replace my cassette and the Route doesn't open until 10.

Maybe see you then.

I will have all of my tools if you need to use them. That way you could get it done before the Route opens. I'll PM you with my cell number.

Unfortunately I don't think the Route will have one until Saturday (I think the River Falls store will recieve it tomorrow, so Red Wing will pick it up that night). Those are the breaks of small(ish) town bike shops, no huge stock of components. I actually bought their last middle ring and got a phone call from Gus giving me crap as he needed new chainrings after getting a new chain and cassette. Thanks for the offer though. If worse comes to worse, I can probably take a few shortcuts to catch up (skip a few of the singletrack sections) since you'll be in a time crunch.

Isaac

P.S. Or I think the smallest few cogs are still ok in the back, so in theory I could just spin spin spin and get the cassette replaced afterward. I'll keep you updated.

You know if you guys would just jump on the single speed bandwagon with me you wouldn't have all of these drivetrain issues :)

I will be riding sometime on Saturday too but probably not until close to noon. My wife will be out of town until about 11; I'll have the kids until then. I'd love to work out something for a group ride though. I'll keep you guys posted but don't wait for me if you are able to get out riding earlier.

All I need is a chain tensioner, new beefy chain, spacers and cog, and a chainring up front and I'd be set right? Not worrying about any of that shifting junk sounds very appealing after the past couple days. What gearing do you use on Memorial?

What gearing do you use on Memorial?

I usually run a slightly easier gear than most guys, but I rode for the first time last Saturday with a 32x20 and needed every bit of spinniness for the hills. Memorial was a whole new fun ss experience.

Let the conversion begin! :D

I'm currently commuting on a SS and I'm in the process on building up a Biancho BASS frame to race and my winter bike will be SS. So I am always looking for parts and SS info.

Riding Memorial will be a whole new experience for me on a SS. (granted I never change out of my middle ring right now, or shift much in the rear):D

Porter,

FYI, I don't think I'll be able to make it tomorrow morning (at least not near 10). I may see you out there though as it will be closer to noon (might see Kris out there too I guess) if I get out at all.

It should be noted that Mara is also riding a steel frame with rigid steel fork. Props on that!

I've been running a 36 x 18 gear combo for a couple of seasons now. It's a bit stout, but I found that I was spinning out the original gear combo (don't remember what that was off hand). I would definitely recommend starting out on the low side and working up if you need more gear.

Memorial is a treat on the SS. The single track is a blast and the climbs are all doable. You'll definitely get worked, but its a great time. One of the real treats is the silence as you ride. There's no gears clicking around, no grinding of a missed shift, no chain suck (Gus), etc. It's great! Plus, all you have to do is ride rather than worrying about what gear to get into for the next climb or corner. What could be better?

I've done Memorial with 34x17 and it was just right, the only climb I didnt make was that big rocky uphill, what did the name of that used to be?

I stopped there on Wednesday to ride it for the first time but I think I was riding it backwards. I rode up the tar and then road around the small fence. This left me in a large field on top of the bluff.

I continued to ride on the trail that led from the fence and it seemed to take me clear across the opening up on top and led me into a doubletracked size trail on the other end (following some markers that were hanging from posts along the ground level).

Was there a turn to the left somewhere that I missed?

Was there a turn to the left somewhere that I missed?i'm not sure where you went from there but if you do it right you should pretty much be going in a counter-clockwise direction, did you hit the killer switchbacks and the teeter-totter?

It really became apparent to me that I was going the wrong way when I hit the teeter-totter and was going the wrong way so I must have gotten started in the wrong direction somehow.

When you get into the first field there is a lead-in to the trail in the woods on the left. There is a beaten trail in the grass so you must have just missed it. From that lead-in you will hit the so called 'killer switchbacks' and the teeter. To hit all the trail you will continue clockwise around the top of the bluff. Kris said there should be signage going up sometime this summer.

Ahh I was probably almost back to the beginning then. I was riding with my girlfriend and she was getting tired so we turned around at the teeter and headed back the way we came in. Where is the new bridge located? I never saw that either. Next time I'm in the area I will have to scout out the beginning a bit more and see if I can find the entrence.

No worries! You had me thinking for a second though.(maybe shorter) I was wondering how you came up with counter clockwise. I was trying to figure out if you were left handed or something. Ha ha ha. Hope you got your bike issues figured out. The ride on Sat. was good but very hot. We only did one full loop with all the climbs and then it was decided that a plunge into the river to cool off was the best idea.
