3+ inches of rain from last friday pm until sunday pm. more rain today. the trails were really, really wet before all the rain. the rain nevers stops...
trails up here are really wet. spirit is probably worse due to springs/rocks on the slopes.
don't get your hopes up... :?)

Yo Kurt,
Have you checked out the DH trail at Spirit yet? I hear that it is holding up well considering all the rain we have gotten. You and Cuz-J need to go give 'em a look see, and tell Cuz-J and his crew that they better be at the Greenman Down this year representin' D-town. Bunch of sallies didn't show last year :p

Dammit...this rain is insane. I will keep an eye peeled at Duluth weather. Thanks for the info and if you hear anything else, I would appreciate any other info you can provide.
Hopefully be riding next week!

OK, I see that Duluth area trails are closed...how about Spirit Mountain? Are they open and if so, how are the trails? I will call up there too but curious to see if anyone had any info.
I am driving up from the TCs tomorrow for Grandma's and would like to get a ride in. If anyone is interested, let me know!
I should be there all day tomorrow to do some building, things on Spirit drain pretty fast and other parts are swamp...hard to say what conditions are on teh MTN but I am game for a ride!

I'm going to be there tomorrow probably.
Buck, where is this trail you speak about at Spirit Mtn? I went there today with my friend Alyssa and we didn't find much to ride.
We ended up finding one of the cross country ski trails and were surprised to find it went nearly straight uphill at many places. The rest of the place was very overgrown so it was hard to find anything decent to ride. And when you thought you found something, you had to go slowly since you could barely see the trail with the tall grass. I almost went over the bars a few times because I could barely see the trail through the grass. It wasn't a bad ride but not very exciting either. I doubt I'll be back until it is more developed.
Thanks,
Jess

Yeah if you don't mind I am going to forward your frustrations on to some people at COGGS who tagged a sign deal on to all of my work and have yet to do anything. none of the trails up there are marked you pretty much need a local...lame I know but that is what happens.
The Dh trail that was just completed, is very well ridden in and easy to follow, follow the path from the triple, then continue a cross the crappy creek thing, and over the hill, keep following the mowed path as you come to the road look at the woods in front of you or some what to your left, that is where the trail entrance begins the wooded sections of the DH course. From there it is very easy to follow the whole way down, be for warned that it is a one specific trail! can't ride up many of the new portions!
Thanks and enjoy!

I don't mind if you forward it to them. Thank you for asking!
I'm not sure I understand your directions. No matter, I doubt we'll be back again this summer. I really should have asked if anybody was available to ride today.
We'll be back once Alyssa buys a MTB with suspension. She rode her Trek hybrid and did a great job considering semi slick tires, no suspension, and a pre-existing, fairly deep laceration at the base of her palm!
I wasn't expecting the cross crounty trails to be so hard to find and ride. The Spirit Mtn maps don't make any sense. The only locations shown on the X-country trail map are a "warming hut" and the "cross country control building". How are we supposed to find these when the downhill and X-country maps have absolutely NO locations in common? We just decided to ride and quickly found out going directly down the grassy slopes was dangerous when you can't see the dips, rocks, and gullies.
It will be much better once things are marked and the lifts are working! Those climbs were intense!!!
Thank you for your work on the Spirit project.

I am really sorry for the bad expirience you and your friend had...definitely not a place for a hybrid :geek: though! Even when you do find the trails they are very rugged trails. I am rather dissappointed myself since COGGS the local club tagged some stuff on my proposal and I have yet to see any of it happen one of which was signage, I may approach Spirit on my own, I'm starting to get some pull around there! :etard: It is silly, I met or talked to 8+ riders that got lost on Spirit Mtn. Part of me think that the locals don't want signs...I guess they are only delaying the inevitable! I certainly hope you try to come up and ride there again yet this summer, please contact me and I will do my best to get you hooked up with a local to show you the trails or I* myself will be there to meet you!
Thanks for the great input! I like to hear it!

I am coming up this afternoon as apart of the Grandma's mob, not running but my GF is, and was going to get a ride in at Spirit. Anyone going to be around this afternoon? Last year I went at the same time and conditions were MUDDY and they were doing some landscaping in spots. Any info on current conditions of the trails?

spirit is a very hard place to know were to go, the trails are all over linking to this that. I only know the way around the downhill trail and the upper part of the xc course since i use to race xc. but i dont' remember the lower section by the water fall or anything. if you really want to do some rideing, go to montulac on a tuesday night starting at 630pm, the coggs rides start. Easy to fallow trails but has a hard climb right in the begining. I've been thinkin about gettin sum1 and mark up spirit with arrows and what not but havn't found sum1 and havn't had the time.

I will just be up there for the day and I did get a little lost last year...kinda fun actually. I should be up there around 3-4 so if anyone is interested in taking a rip around Spirit, let me know!

you were/are riding the xc ski trails which aren't the singletrack trails on the ski hill. email the chair of coggs at chair@coggs.com and ask them to mark the singletrack/race course trails.

i wouldn't say that spirit is a mountain, just a "big boned" hill...
