View Full Version : I took one for the MORC team!

Actually the web site. I had the "web nazi's" at work come into my office today, close the door, and attempt to lecture me on the "amount of time I spend visiting the MORC site." Apparently they did random research into employees web usage and I "browsed" this site on average 25 times a day. Wholly crap 25 times! I never noticed!
Anyway I told him I could take walks instead cause of the eye strain in dealing with computer graphics every day, all day long, and instead I choose to read the forums to give my eyes a little diversity in what they see and alleviate the strain. I think they bought it.

Damn....I sure wish my company would do that!! It's like.....give me some @#$%ing work and I will rock the house. But instead.....slow....nothing going on.....and I just sit and wonder when I will get laid off or something.....but no one gets laid off here.....no matter how unproductive they are. I don't get it.

Where the heck to you people work??? I'm swamped! I just love hitting our site to see "whats going on", and how everyone's doing. Anyone else out there get the "talking to" from the IT geeks in your company? I'd like to hear about it.
I am lucky, I am the IT geek. :)

That kind of stuff is so idiotic, it's one thing if somebody has a productivity problem, otherwise leave them the hell alone. An argument could be made that letting you hit the MORC site a few times a day (25 would be way low for me) keeps you happy and therefore productive.
Also don't give me that crap about doing personal things on company property, that's just corporate drone stupidity.

Danimal, you should work for an ISP where such things, surfing the web (i.e.; viewing the MORC website) is what your job is all about - sorry to hear about the web nazi's - where was your supervisor?

Here is how I view it. If the person is getting their requested work done on time, who cares what they do while they are working. Take programmers for example: I happen to be one of those with a natural knack for programming, don't know why, and I can scream through something very quickly and have it done in no time at all. I know other programmers that take 2 days to do what I can do in 4 hours. I don't know if this is work speed or what it is, but everyone has their own pace. So, I end up sitting around bored a lot and if I went to the project lead and told him I was done, which I do a lot of because I like the work, I would/do end up doing twice the work.
So, I think whoever is in charge of me, I actually don't always know, realizes that all my tasks are up to speed and there is no new stuff coming down the pipe right now. They also know that when things do get crazy busy and a lot needs to be done, I will work my @ss off to get it done and even work late if I have to.
I like this type of thinking and as long as employees are good self motivators, it works really well and is low stress. Low stress equals better productivity at improved quality. This has been proven time and time again. But there are still companies and managers out there that think employees should be busting their @sses for every minute and be putting in 50 - 60 hours a week. This is not productive and it wears/stresses people out, which makes quality go down.
Anyway, I guess I am glad I have this job for now. I am working on starting my own company. I am working on the website right now, when it's up, I will do my shameless plug here for all of you to see.

I hear ya Shad, the previous Art Director took 4 weeks to grind out a magazine layout, I can do it in 4 days. I am superfast with concepts and design work. My supervisor knows this and he hasn't been hastling me, just the IT dept. I guess they're just stretching their muscle around here. My worry is if they go to HIS boss. Oh well I guess some people have to justify their existence.
PS - Thanks Shad for putting your old avatar back up on the site, that MOCA thing wasn't cutting it with your personality. And where are the chic's?

let's see...i work for the government. do you want me sitting around wasting YOUR tax $$ on surfing the 'net?? would you rather i be replying to some silly thread that doesn't even belong in the "biking" section or
sweeping/plowing/patching/cleaning your cities' streets??
i would have a hard time as a private employee surfing the net on my employers dime, but that's just how i was brought up [honest days work blah blah blah...].
by the way, i'm off on vacation [cuz i have waaaay more time off than shad] today and the rest of the week, so there...

That's just the thing, though: different people have different working styles. I know some people who are like you or my wife who, when you're at work, you're at work and you're not even capable of thinking about anything but work.
I on the other hand, absolutely cannot work like that. I'm more productive if my work day is broken up a whole bunch. Ideally, my work would be broken up by other, varied types of work. I'm hoping my new job will be like that because they keep training me in on some new part of the business they want me to work on.
But, still, I don't think I'll ever do away with my need for a brain break. I'm incredibly lucky now, too, because I *am* my own IS department and the only evidence my boss would have that I'm goofing off too much is if my work didn't get done. That's the way it should be.
That said, working styles aside, this nonsense about every minute at work you're not doing work-related tasks is money stolen out of the pockets of taxpayers and/or employers is petty, bean-counter hogwash. People aren't computers, they need breaks and they will take breaks. Sometimes that break's at a the water cooler, sometimes it's at morcmtb.org. Same diff, really. In the end if your work is getting done right and on-time, who cares what the means were?
Good management cares about results. Lazy, bad management tries to put a number to absolutely everything and loses the forest for the trees.

As an employer (and employee), I understand the need to work while you are at work. However, nobody can be expected to force themselves to not take a break now and then, and constantly be putting 100% of their energy and brain into their job. We just have to make sure that we, on average, put in a day's work for a day's pay. Any place that won't let you check the MORC board or make a phone call now and then, probably isn't the kind of place where I would want to work.
However, I disagree with the notion that if you are a genius and can do your work in half the time of an "ordinary" person, that you only need to work half of the time. It is very difficult to estimate how long a task is going to take, and there are many ways to cut corners and call it complete, when you could have done a better or more complete job. If the task turns out easy and you get done early, you should start on the next task. If you are really faster and smarter than the others, then you should be pulling in a bigger hourly wage. If your employer doesn't agree with your assessment, then you need to find a better employer (or become one).

I would rather you made the most of my tax dollars by being as productive as possible, if you so are fried and bleary eyed that you type 3 extra zeros in the price of that coffee pot, that's not doing us any good either. I'm not condoning that people spend hour upon hour surfing the net, but if somebody is happier and more productive if they hit the MORC forums once in a while then more power too them.
We're not robots.

I disagree because there is a value on the work done, not on the time it takes to do it. So, you estimate how many hours it should take to do something and charge on that estimation. If I get it done quicker....so be it, I am still gonna charge the going rate. This does go the other way too. If it takes you twice as long to do it and you work extra hours, especailly being salaried, you don't get more pay. So, there you have it. In the end it all comes close to being the same.
As far as moving onto the next task.....many times I don't have one. So I do one of two things. Browse the web sometimes and other times I keep up to date on technology and new design and programming practices. I take time to learn something I might not have known. I should get more pay for what I am doing, but I don't. Oh well.....no biggie. At least I live a decent low stress life, which is the most important thing for me.

Sounds like your type of work should be done on commission, rather than hourly.
Anyway, we'll agree to disagree. I'll also stop arguing because this is turning non-bike-related.

If you are interested, I'm considering sneaking out late tomorrow (friday) morning for a couple laps at Leb, *IF* it's dry.
I'll be glad to show you the trail if you don't mind riding with an old, slow guy. Otherwise, I'm going to be gone for the next 9 days, so you'll have to ride with someone faster.
