I have a wedding in Winona tomorrow and I was thinking of throwing my bike in. What are the conditions like down there? I'm guessing mud, but maybe there is a glimmer of hope?

I just got back from 'zinger and it wasn't muddy! It should be great tomorrow, although more rain is in the forecast for Sat PM and Sun.

have fun if the weather works with you. The trails are in pimp condition to WAMB. I wrote up a quick trail instructions for you if you want them. They are sorta rough but will get you through the trail system if you have never ridden there.

Had a chance to ride the trail on 5/25. It was in great condition. I really have to make the trip to Winona from the cities more often. I'm reminded every time I ride Holzinger, what a gem it is. Kudos to WAMB and to all who do trailwork out there. The trail was recently trimmed of overhanging brush and weeds which really makes for an nice ride. Also, the new (since I last rode it) bridges are awsome.
Keep up the great work!
Those of you in the Winona area- If you haven't seen the newest MORC newsletter, stop in at Adventure Cycle and grab one, I dropped a bunch there.

I did get to ride on the 21st before the wedding and it was great. I ended up putting in about 2 hours up there just riding a couple of laps. The trails looked great and rode even better. Nice job WAMB! I wanted to ride the quarry section but I forgot how to get there. Anyone have directions for the next time I'm there? Thanks.

there must have been some miracle grow in that rain we got this past couple weeks. The vegetation has really grown a lot, I road all of zinger today and Rock Quarry was very sketchy from overgrowth, at times to the point of not being able to see the trail. Wildwood climb is in mint condition as is much of the upperloops and all of the lower loop. The Trails are very fast right now.
I also got the privilege of seeing a dude siting on a pail today in a parking lot naked taking a make shift shower after a ride. I didn't expect that, but whatever works I guess.

Thewavebb- How do I get to the Quarry section when I'm up on top? I've rideen it once before but I do not remember where to go to get there. Thanks.
Porter,
General vicinity of Quarry from a non-locals memory. If you're going up Wildwood climb, when the trail splits near the top, the quarry area is off to the left and the majority of the other upper stuff is to the right. Not sure if that helps. I'm sure Ben will post better directions.

That's how I would describe it...and I live in Winona! I was up there today and it rocked.

after you come up wildwood climb you come to a sorta gathering area with a log laid down as a bench. As your standing there gasping for air, look up the hill. There will be two trails, you want to take the one to the left. After climbing at most 100 feet of the trail look to your left you will see a trail branching off at almost 90 degrees to the main trail. This is Rock Quarry. As you ride down the trail you will see a sign with a Black Diamond on it.
***Word of warning though, Rock Quarry is overgrown huge right now from all this rain. ***
I rode today and it is in awsome condition right now.:D :D

Also...There is a tent as of two days ago sitting in the trail as you enter the quarry common ground area. Who ever left it there trashed the area with bottles and spray paint. Damn College kids ( now that i'm not one:)) If anyone wants to ride ever let me know. I have a job with flexible hours more or less so give me a couple hours heads up. You can email me at windsurfing_1@hotmail.com or just post on here as I check it often.

Oh yeah. I meant to mention that as well. It kinda freaked me out when I first came upon it. I didn't know if it was a homeless camp or recently abandonned party site. Sounds like the latter. It's too bad that crap like this has to go on. Last time I rode through there, someone had lugged a huge TV into the quarry and tossed it off one of the ledges. Shattered glass everywhere. Some people. . .

It freaked me out too...I rode by with caution and didn't do too much investigating since I didn't want to get into a bum fight if it was a vagrant. It is too bad that people seem to need to destroy things. That part of Rock Quarry is a highlight of it for me as its a cool rock cropping.

I'm just curious about how much rain you have received down there in the last couple days. I will once again be down there for a wedding this weekend and I would love to ride on sunday. (granted it is dry enough) Maybe this time I'll find the quarry. Ha ha ha.

We got a good dumping, but the heat, sun and hopefully a couple days of not so rainy weather and the trails should be in good shape. Last Monday night a good chunk of the overgrowth on Rock Quarry was taken care of so the trails are getting in perfect condition. I will be here on sunday if you want a trail sherpa at all. When abouts are you riding?

Depending on how crazy the reception is for the wedding, I should be out there no later than noon. I'll be riding a bright orange Klein Attitude.

I just ran lower loop, up wildwood and around upperloop and I am sad to report that the trails are for sure too wet to ride anytime tonight and tomorrow morning. If we evade the rain tonight, there is a slight chance of ridable conditions tomorrow afternoon.

I never did end up riding. I figured with the downpours on friday night and saturday afternoon, it would be far too wet. Guess I'll have to wait until I venture down to Winona another time.

We rode the upper-loops (does anyone still call this the "Flower Bed"?) this past weekend (6/19) and the trails were in great shape. Not damp at all and very fun. Some areas of the upper loops are getting tight, but lots of fun. If you come up Wildwood to the upper loops, beware, there is a tree down about halfway between "The Bench" and the entry to the upper-loops. It's just over a crest and I doubt you can duck under it.

The trails are in primo condition. Even in the heat today I had a blast. There were some trees that were down, but WAMB has taken care of that problem. WAMB has also done a great job of cutting back the overgrowth every monday night all summer. If you dont mind a great drive along the river down hwy 61, you should come down and ride some amazing trails.

I only rode a small portion of the trail cause I was tight on time but it was okay to ride. Few wet areas where the run off channels are coming down the bluffs and trail didn't look like it had been ridden that much in awhile, maybe that will change with college starting back up but doubt it, wish I had known it was there when I was in school there.

I went out on a ride today and its a bit sketchy with the leaves. Completely doable, you just have to watch your front end so you don't wash out. One section of wildwood is just all leaves up past your cranks so be carefull.

Sounds like the Zinger is ready to go! A friend of mine, that lives down in God's Country, was out and rode a couple of loops on Sunday. He described the trail as tacky, with 2-3 soft spots. Having no mud or dirt on the frame after a couple hours of riding must mean something.
I think it helped that the SE part of the state didn't get dumped on with snow the end of March. If you're down in this neck of the woods, get out and ride!

We rode Holzinger on 7.22.06. The trail was a little tacky with some click leaves but in overall great condition. There is some overgrowth on the flats and a lot in the quarry section but it was still a great ride.

I was out today and the leafs were great. You really need to watch the trail for rocks that are covered by leafs. I took the wildwood section a little slower due to all of the leafs, but the rest of the trail was good.

As of yesterday, the trails were completely covered with leafs. Trail was great. There were two small patches of mud on the flats.

As of today, it was dry and fast. The rollers section was covered solidly with leafs, but the rest of the trail was all good. Nice weather.:)

Thanks for the updates... Was thinking about making the trek down to ride Holzinger, Cherry Bomb, and HPT in LaCrosse but unsure of the trail status... Good to hear people down your way keep us in the loop...
Any news on the HPT in LaCrosse??? Rode there last Fall, nice flowing and tight singletrack with a little white knuckle action to keep you honest...

I don't know much about the LaCrosse area trails, but Holzinger and memorial are both in good shape. Let me know when you are coming down and if I am riding I will let you know the condition.

The trail was in great condition. A little moisture made the dirt perfect and the rocks a bit more challenging. There is a bit of overgrowth, especially on the entrance to the rock quarry. It's very evident that there is not much traffic down there. We were out on the trail for about three hours and only saw two other riders. And a vacant tent at one of the lookouts.
I updated the wiki with some pictures from the ride.

oh ya, there is a HUGE tree down over the lower roller. thankfully not in the fast section, just before it.

Took a birthay trip to Winona this morning for my El Mariachi's maiden Holzinger ride.
Bike performed beautifully, climbed like a goat.
The trail itself was great. There are a few bridges out. The bridge over the horseshoe on wildwood climb. The second bridge going back to the qaurry. There is also a bridge out over a small gully at the bottom close to the cemetary.
Even with the bridges out the entire trail is rideable.
Thanks to WAMB for such a great trail!
