I was out riding today hitting my kicker that i just built and I guess I hit it too hard. Upon landing, the derailleur snapped, bent a few spokes and finally made me come to a stop. Anyone think it is normal for the derailleur to just snap in half on a hard landing?

I do. I broke a brand new SRAM 9.0 just riding down my driveway. Swear to (insert your deity here). Only the second time using it. If a rear der. will do that on a driveway, a hard landing should make both your derailleurs, fork and wheelset implode. Right?

...I think you two and Pat A need to form a support group for derailleur abusers.

I'm too old to do hard landings or landings of any sort, but a derailleur will definitely snap in two when you hit a scrap RR tie hidden in the weeds.

benches, tables and ledges ate many a deraillieur in my past. Lately its been rock monsters though.

I once snapped my rear der. in two riding over some couch cushions :etard: in the garage, test riding a bike I had just picked up. And once again riding by the river when a stick got up between the der. and the stay.

I had a "Just riding along" incident a while back.

:D

My problems aren't usually that catastrophic though.

I did rip my der. completely off just pedaling once though, I think my chain was hung up on the frame after a rocky descent and I started pedaling hard to get up a little steep and snap. Fortunately it was at the end of my ride and I could see the trailhead (this was in CO).

I'm on my fourth der. this year! Things have been good so far though! I'm guessing your limiter screw isn't adjusted right (like everytime other time I see your bike:crazy2: ) and when you landed, the frame felxxed and it got caught in your spokes. I ahve had it happen to me a lot. I usually set my der. up right, and strong arm the thing so it's bent out a bit to avoid the spokes.
