Lutsen Lifts 2003

I've heard a couple people mention that Lutsen was not going to be running its lifts for bikes this coming year. Does anyone know for sure?

I think this was brought up briefly at the MORC meeting, and was denied. For my part, I believe they will continue as they have; they are making very good money off the summer biking. Running and insuring lifts is very expensive, but they were doing it before mountain biking came along, for "tourists."

Lutsen has been in contact with us about starting a mountain bike patrol there for next season, so it would seem that they plan to continue with their summer operations. I will, however, check with my contacts there, to make sure.

I was told that the lifts (for MTB purposes) were cancelled for 2003 when last there in November. Bummer.

Regardless, I was really ticked the last few times I went up there when the Moose was scheduled to be running on a Saturday and service was cancelled.

If you don't want to run both lifts, fine, just don't tell people on a Friday afternoon that it will be running the next day only to pull the plug on them come Saturday morning. Doesn't make people who just drove 5 hours and spent $xxx on lodging very happy.

They should run only the Bull lift if it is going to be skinnied down to one. Plenty of safe, rideable terrain is accessable from the Bull if riders don't want to deal with the "cascade".

Shoot, I'd pay more money to ride just the Bull lift.

That would not be good if there were no lifts.

We went up there as a club on a saturday in october and they said that the moose lift should be running, but when we got there is was shut down. "electrical problems" It really sucked cause it was Fall Colors and there were a ton of hikers, and a few of them kept walking on the bike only trails causing problems for everyone.

I can see why they would not have lifts next year though. They should have a DH series around here. Maybe a midwest series. Another discussion.

Good news! I sent an E-Mail to Lutsen:

I have heard that Lutsen will not be running lifts for mountain bikes this summer. Is this true?

And I got this response:

Hello Sean,
I am glad to inform you that what you heard is not true. We will be having our summer trails with lifts operating from May 31,2003 through October, daily. Hope to see you this summer.
