After much talk about Afton, I felt the need to get involved. So I contacted Steve Eberly with MORC. and he gave me the contact information on who to talk with at Afton. So I contacted John Reents and meet with him on Thursday evening. Here is what we talked about.
John is very interested in having Morc's help to get the trail into shape. The initial involvement will focus on existing trail maintenance. John would like to get things in shape before the Afton Avalanche race in June. John is planning a trail work day for Saturday May 21. He would like to start at 8:00am and work thru the day. He has offered two work periods. The first 8:00 - 12:00, then lunch and after lunch work will be 1:00 - 4:00pm. John has offered trail passes to those that help with trail work. Also lunch and beverages will be provided for the trail workers. For those that would like to help out, John requests that we all meet at the Highlands Chalet (aka The Clubhouse) at Afton. If you have trail tools please bring them.
I feel that we should get some people out to do some trail work. If you race in the state series and like the courses you race on, get out and help with the trail work. John has limited man power to get this work done. My reason to get involved with this is I like Afton as a riding area. It needs our help to become a place that people would like to ride just like Lebenon Hills. This place has the potential to become one of the great riding destinations in the east metro. So lets get out and do what MORC does best; carve out wonderful trails with some of the best trail workers in the state.
I will be riding out on the trail this weekend if the weather is good. John has pointed out a few areas of concern that he would like me to look at. These areas will be first priority and will be addressed on the trail work day.
Once agian the date is:
Afton Alps - Highlands Chalet
Saturday May 21
8:00 - 12:00, then
1:00 - 4:00
Hope to see some of you out to move some dirt.
Thank you,
Troy Sierakowski

That is the game plan Buck. Afton seems open to the new era of riding that is coming. Baby steps at first, just like you at Spirit. Thanks for the words Buck.

Nice job Troy! I know John Reents personally and worked with him this winter on some stuff. He is a super duper nice guy and I know he was pretty excited about the bridge loop work done last season by MORC and how the 24 hours of Afton has been conducted thus far. Thanks for stepping up, I'll no doubt be there to help with the work. I think just shaping up the existing trail is the best thing to do at this point so that's rad! If you need any more help organizing anything away from the trail as well let me know. I can probably spare some time here and there.

...Which might be a long time. Maybe even overnight. Sometimes I think your wife doesn't like you much because of all the bike parts you buy (and spend time with.)

My wife often threatens to leave me and NOT take the kids, now what good is that. Well at least I wouldn't have to pay child support.

Well, bring the kids and we'll hand them pulaskis and mcleods.

when she says she is leaving me, I think she means for good!! Hugh, Maybe I shouldn't have bought the new frame and fork this spring. Oh well, I will just have to make little mountain bikers out of all of them so I can continue to feed my addiction.

Oh, by the way I had to look up what a pulaskis and mcleods were. I don't think the kids will be getting any sharp metal objects to play with. Last my 4 year old son cracked me over the head with a hoe as he was trying to help with the landscaping. He would be good at moving rocks though, but I think I would be a better help if it was just me.
Anyway I will be there and ready to work.
Nice work Troy!!
Are you planning to do a weekly work session this summer??
I'd really like to help, but May is shot.
Life gets a lot less hectic the 2nd week in June.

I'll do my best to get out there. It all depends on if the wife schedules a house showing/viewing...(Doesn't she understand that money spent on a new house is money that could be spent on bikes? :) Good job on getting this going Troy.
I talked to Afton about ten years ago about running lifts for bikers after I had been out to Vail. They thought I was an alien. (Which I may be, but we'll never know for sure until the autopsy.)
If we work all day, do we get passes for the season or just the day? Thought I'd ask.

BUmp!
Yeah, I think these places will start warming up to the idea, start getting the XC stuff buff, then bring up the DH stuff, I think the managment there would atleast take a look at it...that is what I hear anyway. Again Troy way to go  , you never know how the place will respond some times all it takes is a e-mail or phone call!!!

The way I understand it you get day passes for working, not a season pass. But if you become a regular I'm sure John may reward you.
Troy you might post this in the Afton area as well.
All, if you think you can attend thanks - but pls post so Troy can have some idea of participation.
