Winter Park is the destination of choice for this summer's adventure.
Who has been there? Where did you stay? What trails did you ride? Did it rock?
It should be a good time, sounds like there are a variety of trails and great scenery..

I rode there 6 years ago.
We stayed at a friend of a friends condo north of the ski hill, right at the trailhead of some of the blackmarket trails on the east side of the valley.
The trails on the mountain itself are pretty good, nice to have the lift service. there are alot of other trails out in the national forest also.
Just pick up one of the maps and go exploring.
I would look into a condo since they are really cheap in the summer.

There is also a national park campground fairly close to the ski hill...
I second the riding there- I've done both lift and non-lift riding both on the ski hill and the surrounding area. Very cool.

I'm pretty sure we're going to rent a condo somewhere. Camping would be fun, but we're not planning on roughing it.
I think there is a town just north of there called Fraser that has some pretty good prices on Condos that I checked out yesterday. Maybe that's where KleinCrazy stayed.
I think the trails are split up, some right off of the resort and others out of Fraser, so I think Fraser would work well for a Condo.

Fraiser is super close to Winter Park ski area anyway- so you won't be driving far no matter where you stay. I was out there mountain biking the Fraser valley trails back in '98 or so- most were pretty primitive. (as in not ridden very much) We were using a trail guide put out by the city's tourism department. I'm sure it's different now, but I'd recommend talking with the local bike shops instead. I was riding the resort trails much more reciently. Lots of fun... I'd also make sure and find out exactly when the lifts are running. I was at the resort a couple years ago to ride- the website said the lifts would be running- but when we got there, we found out they weren't. So we ended up riding up the mountain under our own power. Ouch!

I rode there last summer for a week and a half. My personal favorite is the Mountain Goat trail, but they're all pretty fun. I thought the trail ratings were pretty accurate. I recommend using the lifts a lot the first few days - It's at 10,000 feet. Allow a few days to aclimate. I got a little sick the first day or two.
There are also many epic rides off the park property. You'll have a lot to do.There is something to be said for hanging in a town full of mtb'ers.
I stayed at the Grand Lake Lodge in Grand Lake. Nice Lake, nice town, decent cup of coffee available in town. The lodge was okay, but not a lot of bikers there.

Go to Totally Wired Cyclery in Fraser (across the hwy from Safeway) It's a bike shop/coffee shop. Great people and Great coffee. They'll give you good recommendations on what to ride. A good loop to do when you first get there would be this one:
Start in Fraser - Givelo Trail to Northwest Passage, Left onto Church Park Rd onto Tipperary Cr Trail to Spruce Creek Trail to (159) King Cr. Trail to Flume Trail to Chainsaw Trail to Elk Creek Rd and Back into Fraser
Mountain Goat Trail is another favorite of mine. As a matter of fact you can't go wrong with any of the trails. Just ask the locals for what trails you need to get in. They will give you a map and highlight the trails you should hit.
I've stayed at the Super 8 before. You can ride all the resort trails from there without driving. Keep your bikes in your room. They have an area to clean your bike.
I've stayed at Devil's Thumb Ranch in Tabernash. Very nice. A little spendy but nice. If you ever want to go cross country skiing, they have really nice trails.
I've also stayed at Engelmann Pines a B&B. Very nice people. Breakfast in the morning and beer in the fridge.
Another place I've stayed at was the Victorian Inn. Spendy but nice.
Places to eat: You have to go to Hernando's Pizza - the best pizza ever. The other place we usually hit is Smokin' Moe's. A more upscale place to eat would be the Ranch House. Another place was Roam on the Range but I think that closed.
Have fun - We are thinking about going out there ourselves

Thanks guys! Looks like we will need to hit up the local bike shop for their favorite trails. It's been a number of years since I was out there, and I remember mountain goat quite well - great trail. The trippery stuff was good too - chainsaw, flume, creekside, etc.
Any other "off the park" trails that you guys remember as a must see? Anything on the other side of the road (i.e. the East side of 40)?

I have ridden alot of those trails, but I rode it with some of the locals. I think one of the trails was Robert Trail or Broken Thumb. They were a blast. I remember one of the trails was all baby heads, if you weren't flying over them, you were struggling. I'll see If I can't find a map with some of those trails.

That is exactly what we are looking for!!! Let us know if you find the map - any trail names would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Sorry Crash, I found some maps but I didn't mark the trails. I'm sure the locals will fill you in though.

8 years ago I also rode Broken Thumb. It was unmarked on most maps and you were following Rock Cairns down most of the way. We shuttled it but you can do it as a monster loop since the trailhead is WAY up in a pass next to Bertrand.
The trail dumps out into the Cross Country and defunt downhill area on the east side of the Valley.
I'll look and see if I penciled it in on my map on the wall at home.
