The trails should be good to go by April 16th. ;)
Come on out and help us clean up the tails for Earth Day, then get in a ride!
The 12th Annual Battle Creek Regional Park 2005 Earth Day Clean-Up will be held Saturday, April 16, 2005, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. This effort began in 1993 when a group of Battle Creek area residents coordinated a small clean-up effort in the park areas adjacent to their neighborhood. Since that time, the Battle Creek clean-up has grown to over 300 volunteers who collect several tons of trash and debris each year! For the last several years, MORC volunteers have used this fine event as a kickoff for trail maintenance activities at Battle Creek. Our crew will be responsible for removing debris and obstacles from the bike trails. Weather permitting, this is a perfect opportunity to combine some trail cleanup with an early-season ride. MORC volunteers should check in by the MORC banner in the Winthrop Street parking lot, by the Battle Creek Community Center. Please arrive no later than 9:00 AM. Wear sturdy clothes and bring gloves.

Posted on Skinnyski.com this AM:
Apr 10 - Battle Creek Regional Park - Winthrop Street (Maplewood):
Conditions: MOUNTAIN BIKE: Almost 100% firm. Great grip in most sections single and ski-trail.
Notable wet-ness on the snakey ravine (right off the paved bike trail coming up from lower parking)-worthwhile to avoid for now. Otherwise excellent. Look out for a few downed trees 10-20 inches off the ground [early] on the singletrack downhill approaching the corner by Winthrop x Lower Afton rd.
(Per Nelson, Skinnyski.com Race Team (http://www.skinnyski.com/racing/articles/skinnyskiers2004.html))
Road most of BC Wednesday afternoon, except the switchback hill off the south side bottom of the ravine paved trail, as mentioned below in the skinnyski posting. Everything I saw was dry or tacky, most excellente! Really enjoyed the improved switchback off the old deer trail that also comes down to the ravine, thanks much to those who did this work.

Rode Battle Creek last night and it is in fine condition. A couple soft spots, but overall next to perfect.
There is a tree almost down on the southeast side lower loop. You can duck to get underneath it, but I'm not sure how well it's secured and if someone hits it it may come down on them. I'm up to help remove it if help is needed. Tonight looks good or tomorrow after the Opus crits race. Weds and Thrs I have to work late. This weekend I'm doing the Tour of 10,000 Lakes so maybe I'll be available in the early evening.
Just pm me

Rode late this morning--I was the only one in the lot. Conditions were dry with frequent soft spots. Maybe I just need to get out more, but there seemed to be more sand washes than in previous years.
Vegetation wasn't too terribly bad, it looks like it's been cut back at least once this season. Some rain would be nice to firm things up again tho.

Rode today, 5 pm. Many sections of trail are in need of a mowing.
Lots of erosion, particularly on downhill sections. Several sections have developed deep trenches down the middle.

I was there yesterday and saw much of the same thing. only rode about 2 miles in the part near the highway 61 parking lots before heading back out. It was my first time out there, but it sounds like it was better before. A lot of it wasn't easily ridable.
I was out there yesterday, and the erosion ruts have seemed to have gotten worse even since last week. If you can't clearly see the trail through the brush, be aware that there is likely a rut. This is my first summer in Minnesota, so I don't know if this is normal summer erosion.
Also, watch out for the deer throughout the area. The fawns seem to like to stand in the middle of the trail while eating, and the does or bucks are there sometimes too. I came within 6 feet of hitting an 8 point buck going around a corner with some speed, so watch out ahead of you.

I ride Battle alot and this is the worst i've seen the erosion in a couple of years.
It usually gets sandy this time of year, however for some reason the rains this year have been tough on downhill single track sections. I'am definitely changing my bike setup for BC.

I rode BC back in June and it was in great shape. I made my first trip back 2 weeks ago and I agree, it was in rough shape. It is overgrown (which isn't a big deal), but the ruts on some of the downhills were nasty. There also seemed to be more sand than I remember in years past. This has been a great trail in the past, but it seems to be in need of a little TLC.

I've ridden BC since about '96...erosion is worst I've seen. Must be the hot, dry summer we had - the trail surface is washing out in the rain. I'd almost advise riding elsewhere. Any trailwork planned?

I rode BC this morning and the trail was in much better shape than it was 2 weeks ago. One of the areas that had been rutted pretty bad looked like it had widened (either by bikes or other?), and other ruts appeared to have been filled in. The sand didn't seem to be as bad either, perhaps the rain helped?
Also, I found another climb and/or downhill behind the caves/parking lot, which is much better than taking the stairs! I'm not sure how long that particular trail has been there, but it's a nice addition and a quite a bit smoother than the old trail that the stairs replaced. Many a good crash on the old trail...
Long story short, BC is overgrown but seemed to be in much better shape than two weeks ago.

I rode BC recently and was pleased to see that the trail was in much better shape than it had been in July. Serious props to Oilcan for showing me some alternate trails that I wasn't aware of. That trail has some great flow - when you don't have to contend with 40ft sections of loose sand and massive ruts!!
I went out here to ride today and boy is this place rough right now- probably too late in the season to do any work- tons of sand and washed out areas and large (annoying) rocks covering most of the trail-
i still don't know this area too well but didn't really enjoy myself at all today-
bummer:cryin:
Battle Creek is Open.
Please be considerate of any damp areas if we do get rain

Rode on Sunday. Only wet spots I found were right off the parking lot, going thru the grass. Rest was dry. Picked up some glass and plastic along the trail, and cleared some tree limbs out of the path, from a fallen tree.
Bummed I can't be there on Sunday for clean up day.
Hopefully I can attend trail work days.
I was out over the last weekend and did a little scouting and preliminary trail work. Cleared a bunch of snags and deadfall on what I will henceforth call "Axehandle", as it took mine as an offering on friday morning. Look closely and you'll find evidence of it out there. This is the section of trail after Fern Gully that winds downhill through the pines and roughly parralels lower afton road.
Trail work session coming up possibly May 1st. I'll put an official post up soon.

My lady and I rode to BC on Saturday to pick up trash and ended up cleaning up the ski jump section of trail The old ski jump footing area is a party spot, so there was plenty of stuff to pick up, mostly recyclables. Amateur tagging is going on up there and there were about half a dozen empty spray paint cans.
The trail looked GREAT and I'm sure traction was unbelievable. I ended up riding Leb after the cleanup.

Tossed down some miles at BC today with a pal. Trail is looking good, needs some major trimming in some sections but it kinda makes it fun. The Wall O' Death is lookin' pretty good too, a little loose but rides really nice. Trail was dry with the usual sandy spots, great conditions. Get out and ride!

Both are pleasureably rideable again. Both trails were severely overgrown and have been trimmed back. Will be doing more trimming over the next week or so.

We'll have to ride together sometime. With the high cost of gasoline nowadays, I now consider BC my treading ground since I live about 8 miles away. I try to get out there 2 or 3 times a week.
I volunteered for the MORC trail crew last Monday and we trimmed up Fern Gully. We all work hard to keep BC in fine shape and your appreciation means a lot!
Again, drop me a private message or post up for a ride. I'm always looking for others to ride with out there. Early mornings work best for me on the weekends.
Ride on,

Just thought I'd post a few of my observations from yesterday, July 2, for the MORC trail crew. I don't know all the nicknames for the trails so I'll be descriptive as possible.
- As mentioned by others, the long switchback off of Pt Douglas Rd. is jungle-like, especially the top third. Could create a dangerous down-hiller vs climber encounter. The stuff is at eye level and visibility is nil.
- The tight and twisty switchback that ends/begins at the paved trail is suffering errosion in some areas. Some of the pallet bridges are taking on some shifting.
- There's a small section of trail leading down to the Wall of Death that seems to be getting narrower. I don't know, it could be me making an issue out of nothing here.
- Fern Gully is once again in pristine shape with no more thorny lashes across the arms. Visibility for stumps on the edge of the trail is now excellent.
See you guys for trail work next Monday.

"Switchback Climb"
Agreed--that's always in the back of my head as I'm spinning up that thing.
- The tight and twisty switchback that ends/begins at the paved trail is suffering errosion in some areas. Some of the pallet bridges are taking on some shifting.
"Pallet Climb"--could use some cutting back also--as well as the single track on the south rim between the pallet and switchback climbs.
- Fern Gully is once again in pristine shape with no more thorny lashes across the arms. Visibility for stumps on the edge of the trail is now excellent.
It's amazing how many things with thorns we removed last week--you'd almost need a transfusion after riding through that. FG remains one of my favorite sections of trail out there.
I was suprised how worn the goat path was through the rock garden however. I got back there on a bike for the first time this season this AM, and actually walked part of the trail approaching the rock garden. :embarass:
Good working with you last week!
Eric
Thanks for the feedback and posting up trail notes everyone!
I was out early yesterday morning and went to town on the switchback climb. It looks like someone attemped it earlier but just didn't have the time or toolpower to get it all done. I went through with the brush saw and made it rideable. It could still use a little more trimming but we will probably do it when we have a crew to clear debris from the trail.
Pallet trail between the bowl and the creek has been trimmed. That was much needed.
Other overgrown parts of the park have been pretty well taken care of as well.
Trail is dusty and dry. We really could use some rain. Riding is still good though!

Haven't seen it first hand, but my wife said it is pouring in Cottage Grove. Hopefully some of that made it to Battle Creek.
It rained hard, but briefly, here (3M Center) probably not more than 1/4" total. It will help but we need more. Hope our trail work from last night soaked up some of it.
Rode Battle Creek last night. Trails are dry and dusty but still in remarkably good condition. The little rain we had Tuesday had almost no effect. The work we did benching the trail above the Wall of Death is very loose and should probabably be avoided untill we get some moisture to help pack it in.
The new trail on the far northwest side of the park that bypasses the stairs that were put in a couple of years ago could use some additional pruning. esp. on the high side of the trail. Otherwise things are looking pretty nice.
It was HOT last night. One of the guys I rode with had a thermometer on his cycle computer and he saw 100deg at the top of the switchbacks!

Rode it today at noon, your right about the section before the wall of death. The whole park is very dried out and it makes for some sandy corners, and a flat tire as well :(
Road BC tonight. Traction was excellent. However, the rain and heat conspired to pretty much erase some of the trail trimming we've done over the last couple of weeks. The switchbacks down to the paved trail on the Hwy 61 side have some major cockleburs growing on it now. They're about shoulder high so if you lean the bike into the corners they snag your jersey as you go by. In a couple of more weeks after they turn brown and harden up it going to be really nasty. There are two deadfall trees from Monday's storm on the north loop on the Hwy 61 side. One is right after you pass the old ski jump foundation and the other is on the switchbacks that bypass the stairs. I don't know what the policy is on chain saws at work sessions but we may want to think about bringing one next Monday if it is OK.
Overall the trails held up well in the Monday deluge. The mosquitoes are out in force after 8:00pm so if you ride in the evening bring bug juice.

Rode BC this afternoon in the blazing heat. We have some tree work ahead of us for the next trail work session. Just as you come out of the Fern Gully you have two options, go straight or left. If you decide to go left, DO NOT go blazing down the steep rooted downhill. You will come upon the downed tree right in the middle of the singletrack. It will require a chainsaw for removal.
Also, the Jesus Saves trail (not sure what you call it, I just remember seeing the boulder with Jesus written on it) has a tree down right along the side of the singletrack.

Paul,
I rode last night and so far so good. The work on goat trail held up great and the "nicks" in the trail have done there job to divert the water. We got quite a bit of rain. At 5:30 the trails were still pretty damp. Quite a few riders out last night. At least a couple had gone down some of the drops with the back brake locked up all the way down. Arrgg!

Unreal!!!
I was out for a ride at BC around 2PM and some village idiots with mini motorcycles were out on the trails. As I came around a corner on Goat they spotted me from about 100 yards and turned off their motorcycles as if I wouldn't notice them. Whatever.
Anyway, I got into a heated discussion with the nitwits and called the Ramsey County Sherriff's dept once I got off the trail. Apparently "Motorized Vehicles Not Allowed" doesn't mean anything to them. I hope the police catch them.
Get ready to fix up some nasty ruts along Goat Trail because of the morons.

Went out Monday dinner time. Rode pretty much between 61 and Battle Creek road. Busy trail. Saw a couple of joggers, several mtn bikers, dog and walker, and a guy with his 3 yr old son on the seat above the rear tire. Lots of kids playing on the rocks and families enjoying the park. Trails seems pretty good.
 Major bummer.... we just finished deburming Goat Trail!
I also noticed when I rode on Friday that the Parks folks have been in doing more Buckthorn removal with a Cat. We have some repair work to do on the North end of the Furn Gully loop curtosey of the Cat.
On the good new side I see someone has been out and mowed/brushed a lot of the trail on the West Side of Battle Creek road. Don't know if it was the Parks folks or Jeff but who ever, thank you!
I'll be riding Wed. PM and have a chance to look at Goat Trail then.

You're right, but I forgot it in my car. I could still hear them when I got back to the car 5 minutes later, so maybe there was time for the police.
I was just bummed knowing first-hand all the hard work that goes into trail maintenance.
Rode BC last night. The good news is I didn't really see any damage on Goat Trail to speak of. Some of the fills we did during the de-burming have compressed some and could use a touch up. And a couple of the "trail nicks" are pretty sharp and a bit of a pain to ride over, but overall all the heavy dirt moving we did over the last 3 weeks seems to have held up.
Fern Gully could use some work now. The trail is a little torn up where the Cat came through the North end during what I assume was a Buckthorn removal operation, and there are a couple of pretty good ruts with some braking bumps after as you come down from that northern "horse shoe" The problem is aggravated by the "illegal" trail that comes down from the top of the ridge. I see some one has thrown some brush over the trail at the top but we should probably make some effort to more clearly close it off.
The sand in the "Beach" at the bottom North East part of the ski loop is getting really deep. After talking with the IMBA folks when they were here I'm wondering if we should try mixing in some leaves and organics this fall to see if we can firm it up for next year.
Lots of riders out last night!

It rained a little bit at about 4:45, done by 5:15. No mud... traction is excellent... except for the sand:D

I posted up trail work notice for tonight. We'll fine tune our previous work and check out the stuff that you guys have mentioned here.

I was out there yesterday and enjoyed exploring somewhere new (for me). There is one section where some plastic square boxes are on a hill, and one is completely dug up. Trail was in pretty bad shape today from the frost thawing. This trail should not be ridden! I'd imagine if Battle Creek (one of our drier trails) is this bad that people should not ride any of the metro area trails until the temps go back under freezing. There were quite a few riders there and big sections of trail were getting damage. I also think it is a safety issue. A lot of the tight trails on the hillsides were very slick. Riders could easily slide off the trail and hurt themselves.
Please stay off of all of the Metro area trails until they freeze again!!!!!

We rode last night and the trail was hard as a rock! WooHoooo! Frozen trail again! Both of us were glad we had studs on as there is a descent amount of snow and ice on the trail. I would say half of it is dirt and the other half is snow and ice. It looks like cool temps will keep us riding for a while....

Trails always seem to need work. No formal trail work sessions have been set up yet. Yesterday was part of St Paul's Earth Day, and MORC, and a lot of other organizations picked up trash and junk. About 2 tons worth, we were told.
And, NO, the trails are not open yet. there were still areas that were frozen solid, many very muddy areas. There were 2 set of tire tracks throught the trail, and way too many places are going to have to be repaired now. We stopped 3 people from riding the trails, and told them about this website to watch for when the trails will be ridable.
Keep waiting, just a little longer. Every day we are getting closer to ride. Stick to the pavement for now.
Thanks for the details Paul!
As Paul stated, the trails are still really wet and even frozen in spots. There is a world of difference between when the frost comes out of the ground in an area of mowed grass and when it come out of the ground in the shade and leaf-cover of the dense woods.
We've got a ways to go. Thanks for being patient everyone. It really does help our trails last longer if we stay off of them now.

BC is open. Go ride.
Trail is still damp in a few spots so ride carefully in these areas.
If we get rain over the next few days, please practice good judgement and only ride once it has dried up again.
Road BC tonight. Conditions were great but gonna be dusty in a couple of days if we don't get rain. Overall in pretty good shape although the switchbacks down to the road along 61 will need de-burming this year. Also the tree you duck under on the trail that snakes it's way to the top of the pallet bridge climb has shifted down some more and is now only held up by a splintered and rotting end. We may need to drop that one this year. The beach at the bottom of the hill by behind the rec center is bigger than ever but still has enough moisture in it to make it pretty ridable.
Quite a few riders out tonight. Don't know if any of you were MORC'ers

Rode BC today and the trail has been invaded with sticks and twigs. A big tree down in last trail section. I would have stopped more to get rid of the rubbish but i was very pressed for time!
Tom G and I were out last night and think we cleared all the major trees that were down. Thanks for pointing that one out Katie!
Trail is damp but rideable. If we get a dumping today, better hold off a day or so though. If your leaving tracks everywhere it's probably too wet.

Anyone had a chance to wander by the trail today? I have a group ride at 5ish and would like to know if I need to cancel it or not. We got a good rain last night, but it was quite brief.
Thanks,

Great conditions today! A little on the chilly side, but really awesome out there. Had a group of about 10 folks out tonight, nice to meet you all. It was a mix of Erik's, 3M'ers and some singles that all rode together. Had a great ride, see ya next Wed.

BC dried out quickly and is very ridable. The only place a little soft still is going down the pallet bridge switchbacks. Must have had a bunch of rain in a very short time. The ski trails took quite a beating with some pretty bad washouts. Interestingly the single track all held up great. Going down the parking lot off the north rim it's pretty cool to see how the out-slope on the tread moved all the water off the trail (depositing all the organic material on the lower edge of the tread. Things are growing fast and trail trimming will be needed in a week or so. Lots of riders out tonight. Get out and ride!

Doug,
I will not be riding tonight (car failure is creating family transportation chaos). Not sure but I think a couple of people from my group were going to ride. I told them to go ahead if we do not get any rain between now and then. BC drains really quickly and with this wind I'm betting it's OK except maybe down by the pallet bridges. Still looks like thunderstorms may pop up this afternoon.
Have fun on the ride.... if you get it in.

I rode this morning at about 7 and the trail was in great shape. Tacky and fast. Grassy area at the end was damp with the morning dew, but other than that it was a great morning for a bike ride!
I also was able to take a friend for his first ride at BC. He was surprised by the hills. Ride BC enough and it certainly seems to flatten out some of the other trails!
If you haven't been out yet today, get out while the gettin' is good!

I'm interested to see what was up. Keep us posted Travis.
I was thinking of picking some berries there over lunch, maybe I'll see what happened.
Trails are in good shape and drying out rapidly. There is a tree down between Furn Gully and Pine Tree Climb that I hope to remove in the next day or so. Somebody had been out riding... and skidding when the trial was wet. :banghead: We have some repair work to do on Goat trail and the trail leading to The Wall of Death.
The Wall of Death saw some additional erosion from the storms. The 1st drop is now quite a bit larger and the most obvious line leads to a wash out rut:shocked:.... BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

During our trail work session on the new section last night, we noticed deep tire tracks.
This section should be considered to be closed, until we can have an official opening, or if you are in the company of the trail steward, or dirt boss, who can make a determination of the trail condition.
Because of the soft conditions, we should not plan on riding this section during tomorrow night's session.
Please be patient. We are all excited about this new section, but it will be much better, if we can let it settle in, and give it time to dry out.

I did some more work on the new section yesterday. We have about 20 more feet of benching to do, and we should be connected to the section that leads to the bridge. I didn't notice any more tire tracks, so that was encouraging. I think that we will need to do some touch up work on the other sections of the trail heading towards the culdy sack (sorry, I don't know the French spelling).
Overall, I think it's safe to say that the trails will be very wet today.

the trail heading towards the culdy sack (sorry, I don't know the French spelling). It's "cul-de-sac". It's French for bottom of the sack. Isn't that appropriate? Hee hee.
Trail conditions are almost perfect! Enough moisture in the sand to keep it firm and all the puddles have dried up. Another tree down in the Pine Climb loop, just before the series of root drops. We'll take care of it Saturday but use caution on that loop until then. The new Overlook trail is now completely ridable thanks to a lot of hard work by Shawno. We'll put a few finishing touches on things Saturday and then post up a map and directions and have it officially opened.
Get out and ride before the deer hunts begin next week.

Well, since we rode the place yesterday...
The trails all seemed to be in a good rideable condition. Though the Wall of Death has a couple of large downed trees preventing riding the whole section. One must dismount and go under the tree. Or, if one really likes climbing, I suppose one could go over the tree...
The park, or whoever, had some heavy equipment down in Fern Gulley. They ran over part of our trail and there is some brush that could probably stand to be removed from the trail.

With the warm temps, and a special guest appearance by the sun today, the trails should be in great shape for a Sunday ride. A friendly reminder that there will be hunters in the park from Monday through Wednesday.
The trees down on Pine Loop have been cleared.
The new connector off of North Rim is now ridable thanks in most part to Shawn. It will still need some benching but it can be used. I took the trimmer and did a very minor re-route to keep the trail a little closer to the woods and away from the start of the class-5 gravel.
So, if you are coming down off North Rim you can now take the connector and it will dump out just to the North of the pumping station on Old Point Douglas Rd., or if you take the left branch of a Y just as you reach the 1st medow you can go down an old asphalt driveway which will let you out in the medow directly to the west of the lower parking lot allowing you to skip the class 5 gravel down hill that is always washed out.

Apparently the hikers are taking notice of the trail conditions. We have received both positive, and negative comments from this group. A couple of friends of mine were approached on Friday by an irate hiker (maybe insane), but he proceeded to give them hell about the trail conditions, with the pine loop being of most interest. I am not posting this, because I want to make the hikers happy, but I am concerned that they may turn their anger towards the land manager, and try to undermine what we have been able to accomplish in a short period of time.
Someone also took a lot of time to block the trail leading from the wall ride to the wall drop, and staircase area, making it un-rideable at this time. I also found broken glass propped up in the trail as well. The person(s) who did this, left everything else though.

The main issue is that the soil is mostly sand under the top layer. Not sure if we can import black dirt from other sections of the trail in order to solidfy the tread area.
The more I think about this the more I think it might be the hunters trying to direct the deer onto the old trail allowing them to use the foundation as a blind. We might want to leave the logs across the trail until the next hunt is over then move them off and see if they stay.

I just found out from Andy Jordan, that someone has stacked rocks in front of the wall on the overlook trail. This forced Andy to abort his wall ride, and resulted in a completely destroyed rear derailleur. At this point, the sabotage is getting dangerous as this could have resulted in a rider injury.
Do we want to close the trail for the season, until we find out what is going on, or do we go out and re-claim it?

While I was out there Monday there was a group of about 6 kids messing around at the lower lot. I dont think they are the cause of the problem though.
It could be a hiker putting that stuff up at the wall ride. They might think they are doing a good thing by stopping someone from acciedently going over the wall. They also could be thinking that kids are back there making trails.
I wish no that I would have checked out the new trail on Monday. I didnt bother because it looked so good on Saturday.
Maybe each of us regulars could pick a day and just ride the trail to see whats going on. We might even be able to catch who ever is doing it. We could also talk to others while we are out there. Kind of like a trail patrol type thing.
Just throwing ideas out there.

This may come down to a signage issue. As Travis said, perhaps the general public thinks that the trails are not official.
Took and extended lunch and went out to the Overlook Trail.
I cleared all the debris from the drop line off the retaining walls. I also cleared the rocks off the wall ride. This area is rideable once again.
I have a few carsonite signs that I can bring down and try to get into the ground at the beginning and ends of each section of the trail. This would at least be a way of getting something official on the trail. Might be able to put them in tomorrow right after work.
I also walked the North Rim Connector and grubbed out a few of the most dangerous brush "stumps" that were nipped but not cleared. We've got more benching to do in that section but a big congrats to Shawn, Tom, Travis and any others that helped put that baby through and get it rideable for the events at BC!

This trail is the result of a group effort. Everyone should be proud of the work that went into laying it out, and making it reality. I like the idea of using a loppers (shears) to cut the ribbon. that way we can all grab on to the cutting device for the unveiling.

So, we're outta there 'till what? May? I presume it takes that long to dry out sufficiently in the spring.
BC is actually one of the first ones that is rideable because of the amount of sand. The new Overlook trail may be a different story though. Some areas are sandy but for the most part it runs through a lot more loamy black dirt. Plus with it being a new trail it hasn't compacted fully and it will be very soft in the spring. We'll want to stay off of it untill it is really solid.

I haven't seen the official "open" post yet, so my guess is its still closed and wet due to recent rains like most our trails.
Looks like another 7-10 days of rain and snow on the way... might be May before many trails open..
Trail is coming along and drying nicely but there are still damp areas where its well shaded and in low areas.
I'll be heading out there tomorrow to clear some downed trees and will report back.
I was hopeful of it being ready quite soon, but that may all change depending on how much or if we get rain tomorrow and friday.
It's tough being so patient this time of year but it's worth it, to keep our trails from degrading prematurely.

Novice here, so asking rather than assuming...
The trails in Battle Creek Park East (east of McKnight), the double wide ski trails, i was thinking of heading over to see if they are dried out and ok for some easy riding. Is that off-limits also until an "official" opening?
Or is it more of a common sense thing over there, ie don't ride anything that may rut (stay on the trails of course) etc.
When i think of mountain biking trails in Battle Creek Park, i think of the west side trails, and will of course stay off of those until the official opening.
Good question Dave.
We, MORC, do not maintain or know the status of the trails in the eastern portion of the park. I would say that you would have to abide by best practice rules. Do not ride off the asphalt if you're leaving impressions in the dirt. And by all means stick to the hard surface trail if there are signs stating such. I have ridden that area before, but it has been a while. Check it out, but just play it smart and respectful. Thanks!

I have been told in the past by Jon Moriarty that the trails to the east of McKnight are technically completely off limits to bicycles. They are for walkers and dogs apparently. Since we have our own area of the park we should stay out of the others.

They say rain is in the forecast though. If we get rain, please be sure the trails have had a chance to dry before riding them again.

Yep, with the exception of a few wet spots on the ski trail.

I'd actually say majority of the trail is dry but some sections are a bit soft. Don't let the mud puddle right out of the rec parking lot fool you.

Trail was great.
There is the mud that covers most of the entrance trail.
There is also a couple trees down along the "wall of death".

The tree that was blocking the "ski" trail, on the way to the wall of death trail from Battle Creek road, has been trimmed enough to ride around it.
There is still a tree crossing the wall of death trail that is quite large. So watch your speed if you head that way.
Also, the pallette climb was still wet. I would stay off that section for a few more days.
Should I update the conditions page or does someone else do that ?

I would say good job, but I haven't gone to read it yet, so I don't know if I should say good job, cause maybe you really did a bad job...
Almost posted again, but then realized this topic is not for posting, but for conditions. Luckily, I could still edit. GREAT JOB!! Longer than others....
Nice job on updating it Travis. It looks good. Thanks!

I rode BC yesterday it was in fairly good shape overall a few erosion spot one in fern gully on the option right before the pine climb. is really bad. and the trail near the west parking lot the exit onto the pavement not the pallet bridge the ridge that is bench cut in there is a huge fallen tree on the path . other then that it was in great shape.

I just got back from BC. Trails are in good condition. However, there are some leaves on the trails that made some of the climbs impossible on the North Rim.
Where is the Wall of Death in Battle Creek? I am familiar with the trail but I don't know the names that go with the features.

Wall of Death is the northern trail leading down to the paved bike path from the east side.

Keep us posted!
You should be good by 5:00 if it isn't raining again by then. More thunderstorms are supposed to be on the way for late this afternoon and this evening.
If you do ride I would avoid the pallet bridge climb as that always takes a while to dry but the rest should be OK.

Had a great ride at BC! Got caught in a big downpour :nono: and came out all wet. Don't worry, I finished before the trail got soggy and didn't leave any ruts.
Great job trail crew on the log pile on the wall section. It was such a nice surprise to come across that, it's so much better than just moving the log. What a fun obstacle, and well built! Thanks! :crazy2:

Rode thru the Winthrop parking lot on my commute home, and saw 4 mtn bikers. Two had just finished, and they said the trail was great. I didn't ask any more details. But, they had no mud on their bikes. So, I guess we could have ridden tonite.

BC was money last night. Sand was damp enough to be under control, but the rest of the trail was firm enuf for good ridin'. 'Twas perfect to demo some new wheels .
Unfortunately, big storms on the horizon... so a second go of it tonight looks out of the cards.

We fixed a bunch of sandy spots last Monday so that may have helped as well.

I walked the entrance from the school, and it was not too bad. a few puddles in low areas. I saw a couple riders when I was driving up and asked one as he was coming out. He had a little mud on his shins. He said, there were a handful of wet spots but most of the trail was in good shape.

I went, and a couple of the rutted out climbs by the ski jump foundations on the north rim are a little slick to ride. The rest of the trails seemed like they were okay with muddy spots on the pallet bridge at the top and the trail leading out of the rec center parking lot. With all the rain, while the trails are not muddy, they have really gotten soft (like early spring) and slow.

I am only a couple miles from the trail and I got 2 1/2 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. IMO I would think that we would need a couple days still.
If anyone has any other thought please post up.

I have other thoughts, but I ain't gonna post them. But, I do have a similar thought as Travis, thinking BC will need more than today to dry out. But, I could be wrong also. :hit:

Judging by the looks of things on my ride into work this morning I would agree with Travis and say that we need to hold off of it for a day. We got a ton of rain last night. There is standing water everywhere and the ground is saturated. BC drains fairly fast, but it is soaked right now.

Plus, the humidity is still high today, which will slow down the drying process.
It would be a good day to do some trimming though.

I just got back from BC. The top section of the Pallet Bridge is a bit mucky, so you may want to avoid that. I skipped the Overlook because I didn't have enough time. Everything else seemed to be in really good condition.
Trail is starting to get dusty already. I brushed the big switchback climb overlooking Hwy 61. The Park Dept. mowed most of the bowl area. Still need to get back out and brush the Overlook Trail.
Shawn... great job on the tree removal and bench cut repair on the Overlook trail.
Travis nice work at the bottom of the pallet bridge re-route. "Travesty" is going to be a fun little line when it's all done.
