My fiancee have just bought a khs tandemania milano and are planning to ride from seattle back to minneapolis this summer. We'll bring a tent to have more fun and spend less money. We're going to tow a BOB trailer and try to average 70 miles a day. Any advice on tandems, touring, training, or staying friends under such circumstances?

Good Luck! Personally sounds like pure hell!

Seriously, this will make or break your relationship. Have you ever toured before? Have you ever done consecutive days on a tandem? I've done both with a mix of people. I've ridden fully loading touring for anywhere between 7-10 days at a crack every year for the last 11. I've ridden a tandem fully loaded. I've been both captain and stoker on a tandem too.

Please don't take this the wrong way... not trying to rain or your parade. Not trying to scare you or anything, but you should really consider doing a couple of days back to back... Saturday out, overnight, and Sunday back type shakedown ride. Touring is hard work. Being on a tandem for long days sucks.

I admire you and your fiancce for even considering such a trip. It sounds like it could be quite the adventure. You'll certainly learn a lot about eachother.

Don't worry; not taken the wrong way. I have toured before across western europe. But that was with college buddies on single bikes. we drank wine the whole way and slept in farmers field without even a tent. And we were constantly on the prowl for women. So yeah, our proposed tandem trip is probably a very different beast for all the reasons you mentioned...

I envy you... My wife would just laugh at me if I proposed such an idea. I'm holding out hope for the kids someday. Keep us posted, I'd love to hear about your adventures.
