Anyone willing to donate a Laptop for the Leb Time Trial? I wrote some timer software and built a database to do the timing. I would need the computer ASAP and would need to install some Java on it to run the application. Once the race is over......you can have it back.
I would prefer a windows 2000 or XP machine with a decent amount of ram....like 512....and a 2 gig or better processor. I want it to run smooth and fast so we don't have any issues. Also, it can't have a bunch of other apps installed that run in the system tray......so I would have the optimize the machine so it runs faster.
This if for Bent Crank Racing since we are running the event. So you know it's a bunch of trusty people who will be using it.
Thanks if you can help out.

That would be really cool. When you say old one....does it at least come close to meeting my specs?
Let me know if you can do this. The sooner the better. I need to install the software and test is a bunch and I don't want to do it all at the last minute.

I think it only has 128mb memory :( Soooo not sure if thats enough for ya, do you need 512? I have another one with a gig of memory but its got all my music crap on it.

What can it be upgraded too? I can always get extra ram I think. What is the CPU speed?

OK nevermind on my old one! Its more of a piece than i recalled. Just pulled it out the closet to check it out. Only 64mb ram in it, upgrade to only 128......4gig harddrive......pentium 2 233MHz...but what do ya expect from 98'
I have another with 1 gig of memory, 100gig hard drive and a pentium 4, 3.4, but i cant let that out, since i use it daily, but you can use it for the race, the only problem is its a desktop replacement so it sucks the battery down big time, you would need to power it somehow.

Thanks for trying to help us out Doug -
What's the name of that one computer place you guys were talking about awhile back to help Scott get set up with his new machine? Was it somewhere in Uptown?
I wonder if it would be worth a shot to approach them and see if they would donate machines for the day in exchange for advertisement.

Yeah.....but I would hopefully be able to get it for more than just the day. I can do all the building testing and such on my home machine, but having at least a week with the machine we are gonna use would be nice. I will keep looking. My wife has one but same kinda deal as Dougs super machine.....it's got a lot of stuff on it and I need to do a lot of reconfiguring to optimize the machine.
If worse comes to worse, we will have power, so I will just use my PC. But I hope it doesn't come to that.

I think you're thinking of General Nanosystems. Near the U of M.

I'd let you use my computer, if I didn't need it for work:hit:
It's exactly what you're looking for, plus it's already streamlined. Too bad Adam got the date wrong...

Hey Shad-
What are the exact dates you need this for? I may have something for you.

The time trial is May 14th. I would want it at least 2 weeks in advance so I can setup and do plenty of testing. If I can't get 2 weeks....let me know how many days before I can have it. I want this to be seamless and smooth....no last minute development or test right before the event.
Let me know what you can do. BCR, MORC, and I would greatly appreciate it if you can help out.

Just curious-what the heck are you running that would actually need that kind of horsepower?

I wrote a Java app that is going to be doing the timing and maintaining a database with all the riders times on it. Since both will be running on one machine and it is a timer, I just want to be sure it is fast and accurate. A slow machine might hang for awhile and I don't want that. RAM will be the biggest help, but I still need a somewhat fast processor.

What he's secretly trying to figure out is:
if you take everyone's vehicle that they drive to the tt and then add in the Tree Hugger Factor and the Economic Value each manufacturer provides to the residents of this country then divide this by the POS factor (as rated by Shad) and see if VW's really do suck

Actually, I wrote an app to try to figure out how your brain works. Everytime I did this the computer crashed......so that must mean your brain is pretty F-ed up.
I have a 1.2Ghz Dell with 768MB RAM, I will see if I can get it up to a gig of ram. How much drive space you need and what apps do you need on it? What type of battery life do you need? The dates look fine for this loaner. :)

Why? Growing up is no fun.
You can live in the unfun world, but don't bother those of us who like to play. Dave will back me on this one......because he is cool.
Sheeeesh.....why did you even bother to post? That's my question?

Oh, that will be plenty of RAM.
As long as it has Windows 2000 or XP, I am fine. I will need to install Tomcat, Sun SDK, and MySQL on it. As far as Hard Drive space.....I am not sure how much space 200 plus people being logged in the database will take. I would assume if there is 5 or 10 gig available....that will be more than enough. What's this computer used for? I will want to optimize it and make sure a bunch of stuff isn't running that I don't need. Sometime people like to have a bunch of services running at all times, but they use up a lot of RAM and processor time.

It's not used for anything, it is my old PC. I will throw a 20GB drive in it and put XPSP2 on it(a fresh image with no crap running). I should have it set mid next week if you want to use it then.

That would be mighty awsome of you. Trust me, BCR, MORC, and I thank you tons for this.
Just IM me or Email me and we can set up the exchange. I will give it back to you as soon as we are done with it.

Shad - if I get my regular computer going just fine, would this other one that I have work for the TT? I think it's something like 512 RAM and 12G HD - but not sure. I'd have no problem letting you format it and using it. Thoughts? My wife is also checking on getting a laptop from her work, just in case. I think they come pretty bare.
I have a laptop built, I hope to get it to Shad either today/tomorrow.

Adam, I would have to see your computer. But, since it's not a laptop. we would need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to use it. This lap Pete is giving us should work fine. I guess I will have more details in a day or two.

Recieved laptop from Pete tonight. I am testing and running my timer software on it and it seems this will do the trick. Thanks to Pete for helping make this possible.
