If you ever wondered why it took so long for us BMXers to think MTBing was cool, just take a look at this pic from the 90 GT catalog. No style, no form and look at what these people are wearing. Look how big those bikes are......sheeesh. I am so glad mountain bikes started becoming more aggresive and the freeride movement has helped a lot. Even XC stuff has gotten a lot better and bikes have improved geometry a lot. I bought an MTB in '87 and I hated it. Not to mention the fork bent and the frame broke after I replaced the fork with a stronger custom made one from Mark Z.

I am going to go back and look at my old BMX magazines from the 80's.........:):) That's more fun......except for the neon part.....:laugh:

You wanna know what is even better??? Is you couldn't ride half the stuff now, that they rode then! And with out them we would still be on little silly bikes you seem to think so highly of!!!;) :D :p
Just one question for ya, why does it always have to be "COOL" and related to BMX for you to do???

Anywoo cool link!!! Thanks for postin' it up!

Shad, you can't dis on that old photo. Man, I think that's Hans "no way" Rey in the background ripping it up with a yellow scarf on...:geek:. I remember when GT came out with that front bike, the "xiging" or something like that, it was a pretty cool titanium bike. The name is basically the sound that cash register makes when you buy it "kahching".
Go back anad look at all the old BMX mags, and everyone had huge mullets. As I recall Eddy Fiolia was the Mullet master!

It's just my roots.....that's all. I am sure people on here have the MTB roots and think all this stuff I say is lame. But looking at things from my perspective and at that time, MTBing just didn't cut it. Yeah, Hans was a trials rider and he was and still is amazing. But in general, mountain biking was road biking on dirt for a long time. The bikes felt that way too. I tried to rip it up on my '87 Cannondale like I do now on my P.2 and On-One. I don't really blame the riders that much, I mostly blame the industry for not taking lessons learned from 15 or so years on BMX when they made MTN bikes. They put fat tires on a road frame and called it a MTN bike. Back then I said the perfect MTN bike would be a 24" BMX cruiser with gears. Well, look what MTN Bikes are like now. Not far from being a 26" or 24" BMX Cruiser with gears. When I got my Kona in 94 I got a 16" and put rise bars on it. The bike felt okay, but I had to keep replacing parts all the time because they would bend or break. Once again, they still didn't use BMX to learn and develop from.......not even GT which started as a BMX company. But, once again.....look at now. Platform pedals and bikes that will not break all the time. Splined spindles came out in the late 70's when Redline came out with flight cranks......but it just started to become the norm in the last few years on MTB bike cranks.

I was heavily involve in the bicycle industry in the 90's and I blame the industry itself. It was like no one had a clue when it came to mtb bike design. But now a whole new generation of riders and companies has come along and changed things for the better. Nothing is really new, it's just implementing things already proven from BMX experiences. Some new things are disc brakes and such, but platform pedals, splined spindles, long low frames, short 4 bolt stems.......where did all that come from??? BMX.

I don't know why you have such an issue with the fact BMX has had and still has a huge influence on the current MTB and freeride movement. Sure, I bloat about it, but I have some history and a reason to bloat and also say my piece.

Everything for me comes from my experiences and most of those are BMX related. It's what I lived for and still live for.......so yes.....you will hear it from me from time to time.

Hey, I had a mullet too. Was thinking it should become the new MTB trend. Anyone want to join me a grow a mullet......that would be cool......

PS: one way to get answers is to rub people the wrong way, I just wanted to see if I could really do it...god, I love my Argument class! :p What I did in the last post is called Abusing the man, attacking the person instead of the issue...I guess I set it up right! Wrong way to argue technically but I'm just tryin' some out and seeing how people respond...Shad I got you hook line and sinker! :D Please take no offense I may be using this for a paper!

Actually, I tend to draw the heated debates. Sometimes I do it by not being clear enough and other times I try to provoke it for fun.

Are those Bio-Pace chainrings I see? My ol' Specialized Hard Rock (circa 1989) had those. I didn't know any better and thought I was riding a technological wave. :scream:

Wow.....that looks scary....especially in those clothes.

Today you would see a dude catching air off of that downside and wearing a full face helmet and knee pads......with baggies of course. Wow, how things change.......and wow how much fun it was to make fun of these guys when I was living my hardcore BMX lifestyle. I think we called those outfits a unitard.........

That's gotta be like '82 or something. Look at that. Paterson Racing even.....cool!! The pink leathers and helmets came more towards the late 80's. I will find one of those for you......not all of the BMX days where this cool!!

Yuo wanted that gear....have you even seen a full on BMX racing crash at 25 - 30 MPH?? Man, those are messy!!!

This is a GT freestyle bike from the late 80's......oh man.....we were hurtin' for style.....

No wonder the sport died. It wasn't until the early 90's when Matt Hoffman, Chris Moeller (owner of S&M Bikes), and Rick Moliterno (owner of Standard Bykes) brought it back in full force with good quality and durable products. Rick was and still is one of the sickest riders to date.....I think he is 40 now.

My 6 year old daughter has a bike that looks like that. It says "Barbie" on the downtube and has a backpack on the handlebars! :D :scream: Maybe this is why I never BMX'd. ;)

Nope, no bio-pace chainrings on that baby. I've got a late '80s Schwinn LeTour road bike with those, though! :)
