I'm leaving for Florida tomorrow and planning to stay there for a few months. I'll be living in that swampy area between Ft. Myers and West Palm Beach and working on both coast lines. If anyone knows about any trails there let me know where they are. Also any hills if any hills exist there let me know about those too. I'm bringing two bikes with me.
 I'm gonna learn how to surf!!
See everyone at Afton in the fall.

Make sure you get some windsurfing/kitesurfing in down there for us (or at least me) I can not wait for the ice to break and the waters to warm

I just rode Ocala, FL yesterday. It was sunny and 72. There are some great trails there.
Ted
Shawn,
How are you gonna get your ice climbing fix? How 'bout rock climbing? Are there any crags anywhere in FL? ;)

Well...Ice climbing is pretty much over for me this year. I went to the Brickyards on Friday for my last run. I stopped by Shepard Road and it was pretty much all gone there. At the same time my roommate was on Cascade in Nipigon for the ice fest. Oh well.. Rock climbing? Not really counting on anything there. I'll have to look around. I'm bringing my harness and shoes but no ropes or pro. Maybe there will be a gym but I don't really like climbing indoors. I've always thought mountaineering was something one does outside. Kind of like mountain biking. Isn't that the whole idea anyway. To be outside? The Freedom of the Hills book isn't titled Freedom of the Indoor Plastic Climbing Wall. The clean air and adventure of it all is what does it for me. Not to say I don't have any fun climbing at the gyms though. It's just not the same. I'll be back by winter for ice climbing. No way I'm going to miss out on that.
Ok I gotta pack up the computer.

Ocala National Forest is about an hour outside Orlando. I was just down in Orlando for the weekend visiting my sister. One of her friends rounded up a nice bike for me to use and took me out there. It is mainly flat windy singletrack, but there are some short climbs in the old quary.

I talked to a few people about the free ride place north of Ft. Meyers. There is another one in Miram Park (I think thats the name) which is on the west part of Ft. Laurderdale right about where allgator alley comes into town and meets 27. Both are said to very sweet. I didn't go because my shock is busted.
I did ride the Alva trail a lot. Just about every day! It's also called the Jungle Trail for a good reason. Alva is about 40 minutes west of FT. Meyers. It's a very well maintained trail kind of like wirth but with no hills and ...well...land turtles, palm trees and other jungle plants, poisonious snakes.. I dont know ...I really liked it for some reason. It's a super curvy trail and if you don't have any hills its about the best you can do to have an interesting trail.
I also rode my bike around Lake Okeechobee. There is a trail going all the way around the lake that is about 122 miles long. About half is paved. The rest is double track/old gravel road. It's makes for a good epic one day ride and I was going to do it again this weekend but we all decided to bolt for Minnesota two days ago. Its a good place to see birds, aligators, armidillos and racoons that are about the size of a skinny house cat. I also took my bike out to some parks like the Sanibel preserve. That was cool because I got to see mullets. Here I thought it was a just a bad haircut from the eighties but really they are flying fish that jump four feet out of the water.

By the way I'm happy as hell to be back here. Florida is the most backwards place I've ever been too. All this time I though you know "west coast style" like they were all up on the newest greatest things in the world. Those people are in the stone age. For how nice it is you see very few people on bikes or getting any exercise at all with the exception of Sanibel and Captiva Island. (for the areas I was in anyway and those people were all tourists)
One of my freinds was going to move down there and the people said if he did he would have to send his kids to private schools because the public school system is horrible.
I'm not the best with spelling and I didn't always pay attention in math class because I was a party rat but I can generally tell when something is way off.
Here's one of those things..
On highway 80 there is a sign that says something like
La Belle 29 Miles
Ft. Meyers 82 Miles
a few miles down the road another sign reads
La Belle 27 Miles
Ft. Meyers 76 Miles
I don't know do the math..
How the hell can people drive by those signs everyday and not say something?
Here's one of thos

It is possible, albeit unlikely.
If you drove four miles, passed the shortcut side road that goes to La Belle, then drove another two miles, you would be 6 miles closer to Ft. Meyers, and 2 miles closer to Le Belle. However, you would have to turn around to go to La Belle, because you missed your turn.
