I was out for a ride today and saw Mara out riding the other direction down River Road in Saint Paul. The thought came to me... How about a post when you are out and about and spot another MORC related rider?
Let's show our colors, jerseys, socks, stickers. How about a post when you spot another MORC member that you know. Casual encounters, riding, etc. Group rides don't count.:p
So, I saw Mara.

I saw a ton of high end bikes on roof racks coming from Coffee mill in wabasha on sunday as I was coming down 61. I imagine that at least a few were morc members. So yeah, I was jealous of everybody that was able to go.
Yeah I saw some MORC members on Sunday at the DH race! :)

I saw a guy in DT MPLS on 1st Ave and 4th a coulple weeks ago with a "minnesota/cog" sticker on the back of his hatch back on my way into work one morning. I was on my bike of course, gave hinm the horns with my lobster gloves. I think he was half asleep at the wheel or listening to the H.A.M.S.
I should really throw down a Jackson and get some rube cred w/ the MORC'rs.

That was me. I figured it had to be somebody from these boards making faces in my window. You caught me wussing out on riding, just like most of this winter. :embarass:
I must not have made it to the coffee shop by the time you saw me. I freaking hate driving to work.
Ty,
Cool man, it's always cool to see fellow bikers out there, even if they aren't on a bike. Don't feel too bad about wussing out, the only reason I've been riding to work all winter is that it is only 2.5 miles, pretty easy no matter how much snow or how cold it is. It's actually faster than driving....

While walking down the hall at work (MN Legislature) today, I ran into former board member and trail worker extrodinaire, Don Youngdahl.
Good to see ya Don.

I think I saw Mara on Sunday, too. On the Minneapolis side of the River Road, coming up the hill into downtown. Of course, I was in my geek roadie disguise and riding my blue Salsa Campeon, so no one would've mistaken me for a MORC member just then. Come to think of it, no one would've mistaken me for a roadie, either.

Nicely spotted. I was doing my best impression of a single speedeer -- kinda difficult on a gearie. Your disguise was much better. :)

I spotted James Ford heading west bound on I-94 yesterday around 5:15. I was on my way home from work and I spotted a bike on a roof rack so I started checking it out as I normally do and when it got closer the bright yellow station wagon gave him away. Looked like it was his Klein Singlspeed up top.

I spotted Larry Sauber on the midtown greenway tonight. He was heading west bound with two other mountain bikers in tow, I was eastbound on my road bike taking the -long- way home.
What a beautiful night for a ride.
A couple weeks ago, I swear I saw Bob Shephard drive by on 66th street, while I was waiting on Bloomington Ave to cross. I got a honk and a big hand-out-the-window wave.

Here is a cut and paste from another thread. I guess, I spotted myself... wait that doesn't sound right. Ah crap, *ctrl V*
Well, I was able to get out of the office at the last minute for a lunchtime ride yesterday. As I was heading to my DT St. Paul "spots" a Fox 9 reporter/camera dude stopped me for a comment on the Kelly-Coleman polls. The segment was called "If I were Randy Kelly..." to which I answered, "I would not have been so wishy-washy along political lines and would not be having a problem in the polls today." Then Scott, the cameraman, asked me to ride a bit on camera. They aired my dumbass bunnyhoping through the scene. I should have given them something better... next time!

We got there about 7:00, and we sat right next to the fireplace at the top of the stairs. I think we left at about 8:30 or so, and that's when we bumped into to Shawn, he was just getting there and waiting to be seated.

Outside seeing numerous morc members volunteering at QBP's frostbike I also ran into Martini at the show. He asked me if a few weeks back had I been driving down to Madison. I said no, but I had driven down to Milwaukee. Turns out he passed me along the way and said he noticed the morc sticker on the back of my car. I was dinking with the laptop (in the passenger seat) and didn't notice.
I thought that was pretty cool.

Not sure if they are a morc member but I did see a VW with a Specialized FSR on the roof parked in the lot at superior shores resort when I was in Two Harbors this past weekend, they also had skis on the roof also, thinking they may have been trying to get some skiing and riding in but the 10 inches of snow may have put a damper on the bike riding, bike also had no studs on, nicer bike than I got though. VW looked pretty cool loaded up with bike and skis.
p.s. Lot of fun up there tooling around in the Outback with 10 inches falling, I've never seen so many vehicles with people who actually know how and to drive in snow/winter conditions that's where they all are.

Today was the day for road riding. I spent about 20 minutes changing a flat on the east side of the Ford Parkway bridge, and at least 25 cyclists must have passed by in that time. I saw a couple of familiar faces from somewhere, Buck Hill maybe, but nobody I knew. That wind was a killer.

My first off-road ride of the year, and man, who didn't I see today?
Ran into (almost literally) Pete Ryan and his posse on the 29th Street Greenway. I was in my usual own-private-Idaho ride state of mind, and if not for Pete's startling powers of recognition would gone right past them. Really, I'm not unfriendly, just oblivious. They were on a most honorable mission to Punch Woodfire Pizza, so I bid them farewell and good eating, and continued on my merry way to Theo Wirth.
Got over to Theo and put in a lap before spying Ryan Lieske, flying the MORC flag. He was part of a mobile MORC army who had already polished off two laps and Leb and were making quick work of Wirth. Shad, Mara, Will, Scott, Kurt, Kurt's pal, more people I should know, people I know but am probably forgetting.
Great day for a ride.

I passed sorta rude like and then figured out it wasn't Zilla after all!! I'm so rude. I did stop and apologyze at the next clearing....funny thing was the guy never knew I rubbed tires. Glad to hear that nothing happened out of the ordeal. We recently just had someone show up at work and say that he thought he was responsible for a big dent in the side of our work van. He said the night before he had gone into diabetic shock and found himself parked next to the van and didn't know how he got there. I had actually had about 800 calories during the ride as I had 2 20oz water bottles with about 4 tablespoons of honey in each of them, plus the cliff bars. I had a cinnemon scone at Cariboo before we started also. I think what happened was the simple sugers spiked and were used and I didn't have a lot of complex sugars to keep be in balance.I am meeting with my doctor next week and we are going to discuss the options for realtime continous blood glucose monitoring. My wife dated a diabetic for a while. She said someone in diabetic shock can appear drunk to the untrained eye. The guy she dated would even have a drunk smell on his breath! That's one big reason for those medic alert bracelets is so people will be clued in that it's someone who needs help and not just some drunk.

Had one of those at Leb on sunday, my son was knowledgable enough to notice I was acting weird about a mile into the ride and made me stop sit down and get some glucose tabs in me before I passed out. If anyone noticed a guy in a MORC shirt on the side of mile 1, Dream II with a 13 year old, that was me. My blood sugar was 200 which is normal for when I start out, but for some reason when I tested it after I sat down it was down to 60 and dropping fast. Afer my glucose kicked in I was good to go for the rest of the ride.
On that thread for "What to carry in your pack" something with glucose for us diabetics, most of us carry something to help if we hit a sugar low but sometimes we forget or don't have enough. And if someone rides by with some candy or glucose it can be a life saver for us.
Glad you came out a-ok James. Might want to check into an insulin pump. I use one and this incident on Sunday was my first reaction in 5 years since being on one. I think I dosed up too much on the insulin when I ate breakfast, causing the sugar low. Excercising didn't help either.

It's just a flesh wound.
A week ago, I went to Leb to cut out the tree that was down in the X section. Prior to hiking in with the chainsaw, I decided to ride a lap. Someone had loosely pushed up a couple logs around the downed tree for a make-shift crossing. It looked rideable, so I rode it. First lap (x/xx), I cleaned it (barely). Second lap (x-out), the logs pushed apart and I snagged a wheel between logs and went over. Unfortunately, my bike landed on the log and put a dent in my top tube. The frame is still straight and rides fine, but it now has an ugly dent in the top tube.
Oh, well that's cool then. Here I thought you went and snapped a stay or something. Good thing it's steel.

I too am diabetic. I have been for 33 years. I started on the pump in February last year. I love it. For long rides, i just turn it off before the ride starts, so there isn't much insulin flowing thru me. I check my blood sugar about every half hour, and eat accordingly. And, I always test after exercise. I did a driving study once, and they wanted us to test everytime before driving. I don't do that unless exercising. I try to keep granola bars in the vehicle, but in my camelback, I usually have cliff bars, granola bars, and some gel.
Glad you guys are okay! And James, hope your privileges don't change.
I did a study for the constant glucose testers, but nothing out from Johnson & Johnson yet. I know about the gluco-watch, which provides a test about every 10 minutes, and has alarms for hi and low values, that you can set. Waiting for the one that looks similar to an insulin pump, and hope it will work with my pump.

I also saw Charles at Theo yesterday, but we actually stopped to chat for a few sentences. Immediately after that I said "Hi" to Will Hollway and then "Hi" again to Bill O'Rilley in passing. Before that I rode a lap and a half with some guy named John who ended up being exactly the same speed as me.
And, just before actually riding the trails I saw Heath W crossing Hwy 55 southbound as I was northbound. I didn't remember his name at the time so all I got out was a "Hey, man!" and he responded somewhat confused, I think. =)

Perhaps it's worth remarking that, for the first time in my experience, I saw as many or more women than men riding Theo last night. While I look forward to the day when this is not even the least bit worthy of note, I was glad to see it all the same.

On your way home from the Theo night ride perhaps? I was beside/behind you for awhile and tried to wave and honk, but my car is a wimp when it comes to that and I was trying to wrangle the 60 pound beast of a dog I found on Bryant/34th this evening on my way to the Theo night ride (which I didn't make it to because I was wandering around my neighborhood trying to find the owner of this dog). Can anyone confirm??
I just discovered this thread/question a couple weeks ago...my appearance in Dirt Rag was a mystery to me, but the described timing was right. I had ridden down and then up Lombard St. in SanFrancisco during my fall tour in 2005. I did not know that anyone captured this through their own lens.

FYI: YOU don't need paypal to join MORC via paypal. When you select the paypal option during the process, you pay MORC's PayPal account via a credit card, just like you do when paying for other stuff bought over the internet with your credit card. It completely safe and covered by all paypal's fraud and security features. That, or quit being lazy and print out a form, buy a stamp and mail it in. Saves us the amount of paypal's cut.

I met Bill Hipps in person riding Theo 'round 11 a.m. today!
I passed him right after the uphill rock garden, surprising him because I neglected to announce the pass. I caught up to him as we were both exiting the park and apologized for not calling ahead but explained that he looked like he was almost going to clear the rock garden. I didn't want to throw his concentration at such a crucial moment.
Good to meet ya, Bill, and keep riding! You're pretty lucky to live so close to Theo. That's an excellent trail since you're concerned with getting in shape. There's nothing like just having a fun place to ride as your sole motivation. Physical fitness is a better side-effect than a main focus.
THUMP!

Yeah, I think it must have been all Chris' fault that I didn't clear the garden, it's really the only explanation...I can't reveal my talent around others as it might make them sad. Good to put a face with a name and he was nice enough not to laugh out loud at my skills or make fun of my elbow pads!
Saw Adam Buck at the NVGP. Thanks for the ice cold Red Bull!

Don't know if it was a MORC member or not, but on my way to work today I saw a guy ride up to a stoplight (Crossing Hwy3 on Cliff) on his bike and completely fall over and roll into the ditch.
Must not have been able to clip out... dude, if you are reading this... that was pretty funny. :p (hope you are ok!)

I saw TML and Carrie (sp?) rockin' out at the zoo on Saturday night. Did not say hi, but that is just how I roll, and Troy was busy at intermission squeezing strange women.
Totally unrelated to MORC, but I also saw a guy I have worked with, so it was funny to see him without a suit on, rockin the muscle shirt and arm tattoos. Isn't there a Miller ad about needing muscles to wear a shirt that you've torn the arms off of?

Rolled through Mankato last night around 11 on the way back from a wedding and lo and behold, a car with a MORC sticker! Black 4-door, maybe a Honda Civic or Accord? 'Twas hard to tell with the 25 other bumper stickers you had on your car. ;) Yakima rack on the roof, and a dude driving.
I was in the red 2-door Honda Civic with the pink Trek on top who gawked at you a couple of times to see if you were familiar.
Anyway, after having driven 10 hours already, it was nice to see a reminder of home.
I wanted to ride the trails around Mankato on the way back, but got going a bit later than planned. 9 shots of varying liquors + other drinks in between will do that to a girl.

It was an awesome fall. The rock drop just after entering the XX. Jodi finds her line, takes it, makes the obstacle only to make the fatal mistake of applying the front brake. Jodi flies over the bike followed by the bike landing on top of her. She jumped up, brushed off and tried it again with great success. High five! I am so glad you are ok. Can't wait to ride again. It will be my turn to show some of my falling skills.

Is Murray's the old school supper club-ish one? I went there for lunch with some co-workers a couple of weeks ago - they have a pretty decent lunch special...like $10 for a sandwich or burger, fries and a drink (I think a drink), but it felt so old in there. And old men and women were dining all around us. I felt like I walked into 1955.
Where's Dan O'Brien's? I go to 8th Street Grill a lot - it's a couple blocks from me. I'm up for anything really and any day is fine.
We should start a separate thread, and get an idea of who'd be up for it before we pick a place. If it gets really out of hand, we may need to rent a ballroom! ;)
