Hello everyone, I am planning on going camping / biking in Duluth in May and was wondering if there are any decent trails / campgrounds out there. I tried searching via the web but info is geared more toward family outings and not toward mtbkers who are out for a guys weekend of good riding, a little sightseeing, and a lot of drinking around the campfire.

Any info anyone could give me would be great!

Thanks,

Buck

Depending on when you come up I'd be happy to guide you for the weekend, I should be cleared to ride by then! BUT I'll be buildin' two trails at Spirit Mtn around then, both for the gravity set of course  , there is some really awesome XC stuff up there as well. They even have campsites out there. Then you have Hartely, they have some fun single track...I'm sure Kurt will respond as well. Aaa, and if you are up for it Superior has an awesome outdoor sk8 park that I ride at routinely.

PS: I see the little dude in full face in the avatar, so I am guessing you do more then just XC???

There is some great camping at Jay Cooke state park, about 15 miles south of Duluth. It's a very nice park.

Tischer Creek was always a good time. Little tricky to find though.

I've never been bothered riding there, and since it isn't posted it is technically legal to ride on. I've read that in the BLM/DNR stuff, and was told by a DNR dude once but that was way back when so I don't know if that still applies. I hope you just left and avoided the confrontation, Duluth has a lot of environmentalists that have pretty good pull to shut things down...

Definitely have to be careful when you're riding a lot of the stuff that's not posted up there. There are a lot of die-hard, nature lovers up there that still see us bikers as a big threat to damaging the land. I've ran into line across trails and the whole works. This was a few years ago, maybe things have changed.

hey post up here closer towards may or when you know the date. I know some good trails in jay cooke and there are lots of spur trails off of the willard munger state paved trail. Which almost goes right to the foot of spirit too. There lots of ridges off of skyline parkway too pick a different line down every time!! lots of stuff to jump off of up there too. Buck will take care of ya too, especially in dh/fr. Hopefully I'll get to know his trails real well this spring.

Thanks,

may might not be the best time to plan a big wkend trip here. we've gotten 80+" of snow and have over 2' on the ground. most if not all the trails will be mud in may, and any trails in the city parks will be closed until dry.

spirit has camping and you'd be close to the xc trails and the future fr trails [thx buck...]. jay cooke has camping but only 1 legal mtb trail. and it's pretty tame.

coggs has 4 miles of trail in superior--www.coggs.com (http://www.coggs.com)

give me shout later on and i'll let you know trail conditions before you show up. i can set you up w/ my fr friends and buck is always ready.

mountaincyclerulz-make sure you're not riding "trails" that only you can see, if you get my drift. we don't need mtbers to be the bad guys. i've worked too long [10+ years] building a good rep w/ the city of duluth. stay on legal trails or trails that are not illegal. [email me if you don't understand...] don't make your own lines, espcially around skyline.

KL,
Got a question for ya, I ride a wicked line from enger tower all the way to downtown, There are no real lines but trails everywhere, they go underneath the high wires, is it alright to ride those??? I usually only ride it in Fall and early Spring when there aren't lot of live plants and stuff, but is sure is a fun line to take.

Yeah Brad, I'm with Kurt on that, I now know what it is like to get places open, don't ruin it for anyone, it takes a lot of work, and I'm lucky that they were interested or I'm sure it would have taken much much longer...once I get the pilot trail done at Spirit, I go meet with them again, if they see it has profitable, we decide on a bigger, more comprehensive plan!

Thanks

buck,

i've rode part of this and afaik, it's ok to ride. dunno who the owner/s are but it's kinda no-mans land anyway. the parks get the most attention, next will be the superior hiking trail.

Yeah,
Talkin' to the COGGS guys that portion along the bottom of SPirit Mtn, is listed as Multi use, so hopefully all that stuff down there doesn't get shut down, Rick seemed pretty sure that is was OK for all to use.

Damn I can't wait for spring to come so I can start building! SHould have one revamped DH course for sure(for the Greenman), then a cool little FR/DH trail thingy! By the time I leave for the summer if all goes well, but I'll be back up a few times in btw there and the Greenman doin work and chillin'
