View Full Version : Trail Changes Coming to Terrace Oaks

This last Summer, three MORC members met with the Burnsville Parks staff and proposed that MORC review the trail system and suggest changes and improvements.
The three of us spent a day surveying and photographing the existing trail system, and we came up with 10 sections that need to be re-routed. The erosion in some areas was so bad that it was painful to look at. Evidently the deer that created the original deer-path trails that were turned into bike trails, had missed the IMBA trail school and made a few mistakes in layout.

The MORC proposal to the City this winter, will include photos, maps, and narrative explanations of all 10 sections that need to be fixed. Assuming we get approval from the City, the plan is to start work in June, 2003. While the Citizens' Park Committee is generally opposed to building any additional trails, the re-routes both enhance the sustainability of the trails, and add trail mileage.

Let me know if you can help with the trail work next Summer.
Thanks

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-um! You guys are going crazy with building new trails all over the place! That just rules =).

I foresee the TC area a couple years from now having 10 absolutely awesome mountain bike trails in the area, each one at *least* 10 miles around for a full loop! Most people would be lucky to ride one lap around each trail in a month!

MORC rocks, that's all I have to say. I remember last summer taking a trip to the Maah Daah Hey trail in the ND badlands and seeing a sign at a trail junction saying 10 miles to this point, 14 miles to that point, 7 miles to this point and thinking "It's mountain biking heaven!" Can't wait until we have a spot like that right here in the cities. :)

When I started mountian bike 5 years ago, Terrace Oaks was the first single track trail I rode. I still love riding it and still do it a couple of times a week. I love all the quick hairpin turns in the front and diving into the roller coasters at end. I leave with a smile everytime.:D

Just like everyone else who rides the trail, I agree the length just sucks! Any improvements to the trail would be great, but I just wish there was more space to add distance.

But even if nothing happens, I still recommend it to everyone. Its 5 miles from my house, so after a quick ride over, hit the trail 3 times, and cruise home.. I'm still getting a great work out.

Well it looks like they have started cutting these trails in. I rode out there last night and was pleasantly suprised to some new trails in the works.

I'm not sure why TO gets such a bad rap. It is a pretty fun trail, and you never have to worry about running into other bikers (although I did scare the @#$% out of a few hikers who had wandered off the hiking trail and got a little too close to the biking trail).

I haven't been there in a couple of months, but the last time I was there it was terribly overgrown, it was actually hard to see where the trail went in a couple of places. Also, some schumcks had bent over some signs making it difficult to know which way to go.

I haven't been out for several months, either. I know the sign you are talking about, and it caused me a bit of confusion the first time out, even with a map.

Gravel and I just don't get along. There's an area of gravel just as you're going into the trees, and another going down a significant hill later in the ride. I did my first endo on that hill ...

All in all, though, it is a nice up and down ride, much like Lebanon. If eroded areas have/will be re-routed and ski trails replaced with single-track, then I think it would help take some of the load off of Lebanon, especially the beginners. I like the new "most difficult" section that was cut in earlier this year - very nice.

Have I missed the trail work sessions for Terrace Oaks? I'd be happy to help out when I can.

Good luck!

I believe John Dahl is the Trail Steward at TO, so he would be the one that will be drumming up support for trail work I would imagine.

I don't think he is active on the forums... yet.

Thanks, John. I don't see any contact info for him anywhere. Is he a one man trail-building crew, or is there a way to get on a list to help out? :D

Well.. I guess until he gets going and makes himself known, he'll be a one-man trai-building crew.. ;)

Just kidding. I believe Don Youngdahl is going to work with him on the trail steward thing. For now if you are interested, just say so in this thread and I'll be sure that he gets the info when they start trail work.

Once it start going I'm sure we'll have some more formal information to send out to everyone... perhaps we can get an update on this on Saturday as well.

I believe terrace could be another way to aleviate trail use/pressure from leb too. I like terrace a lot, would be nice to have more of it. I'll help out on it.
