If you are reading this......your goal is to help me spend it....:)

I would like to do at least 2 if not 3 out of state rides this summer. I usually do the Maah Daah Hey with Chris and our friend Andy, but I want to hopefully do 2 others.

Well, I just found out I have 19.5 days. I was surprised but since I have been here 5 years and I carried over 2.5 days from last year....I have a lot. So, it's time to play I guess.......:)

If you're heading east, Poto (~18 miles) just north of Ann Arbor is awesome

I ride at lutsen all the time. Its nice to ride the lifts up and bomb down for once. There are also a couple really fun cliff jumping places to swim at. It would be fun to get a crew up there for a weekend ride.

I am sure some a group of us Mpls Riders are going to be doing a trip to Cable, Wisconsin if you are interested in riding tight singletrack. Rock Lake has many new sections and the North Country Trail has 30+ of singletrack which is wider than most but the good part is that it's so unused that I have only seen 2 people(hikers) the last 4 times I have ridden it. Good bike camping spot! The Ojibwe is another that always kicks my @ss and some nuts ride it on single, ooh painful. I cannot discuss it any more since I am getting too frickin excited.

Rode Ojibwe last summer and it totally wiped me out. Ran into a group of guys doing it on a singlespeeds. They were doing this after riding the team timetrial at the Firehouse 50 that morning. :crazy2: They ended up second too.

Yeah, Wisconsin would be fun......but I am talking a real trip....:)

You know....like out West or out East or down South....which is kinda flat for fun.

I enjoyed Colorado last Summer. I would like to go out there again. The Black Hills ride sounds cool. From what James says, Fruita is better than Moab, but they are both close together....right?

Is that the one were you bike either out of Jackson between the mountains or come down that way?? If so I did that a few years ago and that was SO COOL. Although I just went up until it went strait up the mountain (turns right). When you start getting back, all you see is this big mountian in the front of you, two mountains on each side of you, and Jackson literaly drops out of site behind you. Oooo.....(drooling)... I would FOR SURE go back if anyone went, even anywere in the rockies. Oh my, can I tage along?? Love the mountains!

about 90 miles apart and a world apart on the trails.

moab is rock, sand, rock and rock.

fruita is 95% singletrack, 18" wide, rolling and fun.

the best singletrack in moab is fruita....

Mike,

When's the Big Sky trip? I'd be down with getting back out to my ol' stomping grounds. Any room for more? I can drive.

Anyone ridden the trails in and around Tsali North Carolina? I believe they're near the Pisgaw National Forest on the West side of the state. I've read a few articles, and I met a guy in Moab that just raved about it out there.

Shad,

Tentative Plan. Troy and I will be leaving on Friday April 29 after work and spending the night at the parents place in Omaha the driving on Saturday and getting into fruita about 5-6pm. Leaving Fruita on Sunday May 8 staying in Omaha sunday night and returning to Twin cities on Monday.

I will not have room for more than 1 person in my car from here to Omaha since I have to take the dog to the parents place. From Omaha on I might have room for a third. the only tight spot might be bikes. Might have to put a trunk carrier on for more than 4 bikes. I might be able to put six on the roof but not sure.

I'll know more soon. Not sure if Troy wants to ride with me or me ride with him, havn't discussed it.

I could find a way there myself. I guess my main point is that I want to have people to ride with and camp with or party with or whatever....:)

This is also the weekend of the Spring Cup at Buck......but sometimes riding cool places is much more fun than racing.

You can buy airfare to Denver for only $150, and rent a car to get the rest of the way. Just ship your bike to a bike shop in Grand Junction or Fruita and pick it up on the way.
That's what we're doing anyway. You split the cost of the car rental between a few guys, and it's pretty cheap. We plan on riding a few days in Fruita and a few days in Moab too.

Hey Shad, if you've got all that time then you should definitely go to Seattle area or B.C. Canada. It's beautiful (and usually dry) in the summer. You will find some unreal technical terrain out there that's right up your alley. There's actually quite a bit of variety though. Go to Bellingham or just about anywhere in the Cascades or Mt. Ranier area in Washington. Or go up Vancouver way or the extreme MTB "mecca" of Fernie B.C. It's all good.

I'd also highly recommend the Banff-Jasper region outside of Calgary for sheer beauty and some epic rides. The Canadian exchange rate is kind of nice too (although it is shrinking these days).

Been there and done that. I've done the drive out there about six times now, straight through every time. It's just about twenty-two hours out to Moab, after my last trip out there, I told myself that I'd never do it again. Forty plus hours (round trip) in a van sucks a lot of life out of a trip. I used to enjoy the big road trips when I was younger. But now that I have a job and I can afford to fly, for $150 I figure that's the way to do it.
We can fly to Denver in about two hours, so we can still work a full day, and be drinking beers in the mile high city by nightfall. Wake up the next day, drive the five hours to Fruita, get your bike, and go riding. Keep the bike boxes and ship them back home the same way a week later an the way back to the airport.
I know a lot of people like road trips, but I'm no longer one of them. Especially when you can get air fare for so cheap.

We parked at the top of jackson pass, then hiked up the trails (DH bikes :D ) about 45 minutes to the top. Rode black canyon and lithium. Excellent trails.

Planning on end of july/start of august. So far it's me and two other guys. 1 truck that's gonna be packed to the gills. Everything is still in the planning stages as of now.

Yeah, once the road trip approaches 20 hours, it's a bit much. But, ~15 hours isn't bad - a few guys can leave right after work, drive all night, switch off napping and be riding in the morning. The first day of riding is a little rough, but you sleep good that night!

That's why Crested Butte rocks!

Shad,

If we can't find room for another in the car or if you get yourself another to share gas in yours or join up with someone, everyone going on our schedule is welcome to use the parents house in Omaha as a Free stopover point. It works well since allows one to leave after work on friday, get a good nights sleep, and then be in Fruita by 6:00pm Mountain Time the next day. It might be even faster then that since I was driving in a blizzard for 2 hours in denver last year.

Works the same way coming back.

I am planning on camping at the state park right in fruita along the river. I already have know which campsites to reserve as there are only a few with any sizable trees. all but the Tents sights, which are very bad, have water and power along with a table and shelter. Park has pay Hot showers and Laundry if needed. it is about a 2 minute ride from downtown fruita.

As we get closer, Middle of March, I'll line up all who want and reserve the site/sites.

L8er all.

James,
You may want to check availability earlier. I'm going to be in Moab the week of the FFTF and most campsites/hotels there are already booked because of the Festival and also some Hot Rod show in Moab the weekend of Apr. 29. Looks like it's going to be a very busy weekend. :D

Mike,

Keep me posted on your plans, I'd be intereseted in driving out too. I used to go to school out there and try make a point of going back every summer to ride. This past year was great. I have a Jetta TDi that gets 45mpg and loves to road trip. Also a roof rack w/ two fork mount racks (only one 20mm adapter though), and access to a 3rd downtube-clamp style.

i was on the site today and all the sites I am looking at are still available for the times I will be there. You can have 6 people per campsite and 2 cars so I will reserve 1 this week to begin with and if more are needed I can reserve another.

No, your campground HAS showers! Actually, Super8 is my "safety" reservation; better values to be had in GJ, no outdoor pools in Fruita.

I am going to order Troy's new Fruta trail guide. You want me to order you one and split shipping? I have to pay $6 shipping on a $12 book.

Now, we need to get serious about hitting the pedals to get in shape. Spin class isn't going to do it all.

Waiting to hear fom Ivan to see if he can make it to FFTF.

Has anyone suggested the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route from Banff Park in Canada to the US/Mexican border, to you? Check it out at http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/greatdivide.cfm

LONGEST OFF-PAVEMENT BIKE ROUTE IN THE WORLD
The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is our premier off-pavement route, crisscrossing the Continental Divide north to south. This route is defined by the word "remote." Its remoteness equates with spectacular terrain and scenery. The entire route is basically dirt-road and mountain-pass riding every day. In total, it has over 200,000 feet of elevation gain. All of this climbing gets the rider into visually spectacular places and incredibly fit shape.

I bet you could use up all 19 days!

Ride safe,
Hans

Then there is the Lolo Trail on the Lewis and Clark National Historical Trail. About 10,000 feet of elevation gain in the first 80 miles, with a 60 mile-long downhill on the west side!

http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/clearwater/LewisClark/LewisClark.htm

Could be fun! I hope to do the Lolo later this year.

Ride safe,
