I am now an official member of the idiots club.
I am cleaning up the office at work to get ready for our open house this weekend and decided to bring my bike home to get it out of the way. Well I just drove into my garage with my bike on the roof rack. I feel like an idiot and a little bit pissed at myself.
Totally was day dreaming as I turned down the alley, hit the garage door opener and drove on in. Loud screeching noise and I still hadn't figured out what I had done, thought I had cut the corner a little to much and was stuck on the snowbank.
Luckily my bike is not totaled, the whole rack got ripped off the car, thankfully I had just put the rack back on the car for the last ice race so it wasn't snugged on there all that tight. A few scratches in the car's paint, some of the chrome trim got pulled off but I was able to fit it back in place and there is a smal dent where one of the Q towers goes but nothing bad enough that I would spend the money to fix it I don't think.
As for the bike looks like the only damage was the saddle got ripped off the rails.
Yes, I am an idiot.

Not only have I done it once....I've done it twice. Once in a fast food drive through, and once in my garage. I figure I must be too dumb to learn my lesson so I switched to hitch mounted racks.

I've been lucky to never have this happen, but I used to chant to myself when approaching the parking garage "bikes on roof, bikes on roof..."
Scott - Welcome to the club :hit:
I am with David. Did it twice and the next day went and bought a hitch mount. I use the roof rack ocasionally but I put the garbage can in the way when I leave so I can't pull back in when I get home.

I am also in this club Scott,
Both bikes have been ripped off the top of my car, loosing the front dropouts in both cases. My car, rack, and garage are at just the right heigth to catch the handlebars, snap the dropouts off and flip the bike up and over backwards.
If anyone needs a set of Manitou Mars Super uppers.... I have 2.
Now, when I put the bike on the car when leaving the garage, the opener gets thrown in the back in the bike parts crate.
Yet every time I drive into my garage, I hear that awful noise.

I did this once a while back, but it was leaving a trailhead that was a nursing home parking lot. There was the normal route out, or one that went under the walkway to the home. I didn't even think about it, and breezed beneath the walkway and heard a CHUNK-thump-thump-thump as my new blue anodized Ringle seatpost was immediately snapped in half by the 7.5' clearance and bounced along the driveway. If it would have caught my handlebars, I can only imagine the carnage, as I was going about 30mph...

Place in the 'what do I do now' category:
I was working at the airport, on the roof across from the main ramp. This SUV came streaming in with 2 up and SPROOOING!!!, off they came in pieces all over the ramp entrance. He had to get out and clean up, and in the process had cars backed up to 55. You could almost feel his frustration; late for his flight, backing up traffic, wrecked bikes, plus he had boxes in the back of the vehicle to pack the bikes in to fly out. Bet he wishes he had taken the time the night before to break them down. It was classic comic/tragedy. Poor soul.

Yep! I'm in that club too. There was a lot of damage (to the facia on the garage and the bike). One positive...with the insurance money I bought a new bike!

I am affraid to laugh at the stories out of concern that I will somehow jinx myself. I was just thinking that I need to get some new clips for my roof rack for my "new" car. I'm affraid now I am doomed to the fate of whacking my bikes up top. It'd be a shame because any one of my bikes would easilty surpass the value of the car.

I think I will keep my rear mount rack.......
...and I will keep my minivan.
Prior to "discovering" minivans, I used to put my bikes on top of the car. Fortunately, (read: luckily) I never lost a bike. However, I did have a similar accident.
I had just spent several days building a nice book shelf for my girlfriend, and decided to use my bike rack to haul it to her apartment. FIrst, I carefully measured the height of the car+bookshelf, to make sure it would fit under my garage door. Then when driving out, I (as usual) didn't wait for the door to completely open, and, whack!!!. Needless to say, after glueing the pieces back together, the bookshelf wasn't as nice as origially planned. Niether was the garage door.

It could be worse, my ex-co-worker was working as a car hauler when he went under a low bridge, took out 4 new minivan's.That was the end of his run as a car-hauler.

YOU DRIVE A MINIVAN!!!!!
:scream:
I put the garbage can in the way when I leave so I can't pull back in when I get home.
That's exactly what I do, whenever the bike or ski box is on the Jeep. James' idea of throwing the garage door opener somewhere that forces you to remember, is a good one as well.
Sorry for your mishap Scott. . .

I've never had to use a rack, but.......
Last summer we bought a newer boat that has a wakeboard tower which makes it really tall and I've got a standard tranny in my truck so momentum is my friend backing 2500lbs up the driveway.
I remembered to fold the tower down a split-second too late but still quick enough that I only mashed the gutters a little bit.
This year I am going to figure out a way to travel with the tower down. 11:00 on a sunday after a good weekend at the lake is not a mental high point for me.
