View Full Version : DH snow race...
Hey guys,
Just got a phone call that Coffee Mill ski Area in Wabasha, MN will be having there annual DH bike race on March 6th! I did it a couple years ago it was a blast and I know there will be a crew from the cities there this year!!! After the race usually you are given free reign on the ski hills, we took over the park and were sendin' HUGE!!! I'll be there will you???

Buck,
Can you give me an idea of what to expect on the downhill? I might be interested in showing up since it is only about 40 min from home.
Problem is, I will probably be on the Hard Tail single speed with studs. Though the XC FS Rig might be up and running.
If Nothing else it will be fun to let gravity do the work for awhile.

I'm definately in for the race. Sounds like fun racing on snow.
hey guys,
Dust, you better show if nothing else I know you will meet a bunch of new riders from the cities. I know of a two crews that are headin' down to as of right now.
James,
Last time I did it, it was first to the bottom, anything goes, no obstacles. Unless that has changed you should be fine on any bike!!!
I'm going to be there, I may not be able to ride yet, but I'll get the skis on and shoot some footy!

I did this race quite a few years ago on a hard tail with no studs and came in second. But that had to be 5 years ago. It was a lot of fun going down Oh Shoot! on the bike.

Hahahaha, heck the best part of the deal is that you get free reign of the ski area, we were bombin up into the hills then dropin' in on to the runs, and skyin' the ski jumps, oooo, so much fun to be had...the more the better!!!! Hope to see a lot of you there!!!

Will there be any snow by then? Maybe it will be a mud downhill.....which would still be a lot of fun.....:)

All you need is a helmet...I'd recommend sunglasses or goggles as well...
Don't know the exact distance, try using mapquest, from your place to wabasha MN. There will be some free stuff given away...

Sounds like fun? Normal DH tires work or is this the chance to make some custom spiked DH treads?
If my work schedule cooperates, I'll probably head out of the Twin Cities early Sat morning for practice, back Sat night after practice, and back on Sunday for the race. Looks like maybe a couple hour drive tops. I can hold a few bikes and gear if anyone needs a ride. Email me at stupordave@comcast.com
Sorry, They only allow bikes the day of. So get there early when they open on Sunday, then you get the whole day to ride...Believe me they won't let you on the day before, I run 2.5s and there were people there on 2.1s that did fine. They groom the runs so havin' studs won't give you any advantage, it's all packed powder! ooh yeah, it's a blast!!!!

I am planning on going.
Where can I find more information like:
Time of the festivities?
Entrance fee?
Spectator fee?
Well, coffee mill had no info up, but the festivities for the day start at opening(10am), spectators pay no fee. the entry fee is like the price of lift ticket...I think that is all that is cost last year 0r maybe a little more. ... should be a blast a couple shops usually donate awards and other give away stuff. I'm bringing some shat to give to the winner and I know one other shop is bringing stuff for sure too...But the race mainly depends snow conditions as to when the race will be during the day. But last year we rode the whole day anyway...date is still March 6th

Buck, I'll be at the race for sure. I hope the weather changes though. Even if it is warm, there should still be SOME snow left:geek: . If it is down to the ground, do you think they will even let it fly? You know how they are about errosion and all.
Anyway, my bike is stripped down right now. Gonna paint it some really ugly color. I also bought a new hardtail for DS races and XC. Can't wait for the new season!

All that is required is that you have a helmet. I would guess the price is a lift ticket($27) there maybe a small entrance fee but nothing I have heard says this is true.

Hey Beau,
In past year it has always been run kinda like 4X style, 1st one down wins. then brackets and such...so no berms n jumps, but contact is kinda allowed. Sounds like there will be a good turnout this year!
L8R
Buck
So is there like gates to run through, or just bomb straight down?
So is there like gates to run through, or just bomb straight down?
Kinda just bomb straight down thing...it is supposed to be more fun then a hardcore race. but the run kinda meanders its way down hill, you will want to be able to pedal for one section. and the best part isn't the race but the fact we can ride anywhere on the hill all day long, nothing is off limits to us...
L8R

PS maybe if enough people show up this year we can get them to make it better next year, that is what I am hoping anyway.
Well, I'm in, my little brother (who just bought his first MTB) and maybe a few friends from the Cities will be there! I'm stoked! I will also be debuting my new paint job (rattle...rattle...rattle)

Wrong on the studs I think, it is a ski hill, packed pow, and it is supposed to be around 34 degrees, I'd go with the 2.5 weirwolves and run like 10psi, but come early and try different set ups out, I'll bring my bike stand and tools along, anyone have any mechanicals, and we'll get ya runnin ASAP!

So is this course beginner friendly? I'm getting the impression it is. I've never raced dh so that would be great. Would it be a good idea to run clipless pedals? I have'nt run them since last spring; I'm more comfortable on flats, but clipless definately provide more pedaling power. BTW one reason I think studded tires might be good is that jump faces usually are not groomed and may be slick.
:)

lol, yeah I would run flats but I LOVE my flats, so it is up to you, yeah the course is beginner friendly, we pretty much just race down the run, no jumps or anything...I sure hope we get access to everything else, we always had before, heck I even have a picture hangin' at home from two years ago when one of my buddies was skyin' the big air jump. Maybe we can sneak some riders on to the Boarder X course for a quick vid/photo op!!! I have Mike building me a custom Helmetcam so I will only have the MORC one for the event. The Mic has been replaced and all is ready to go.
I'll stop by and pick up a couple tapes since I all mine are full. I'll try and be there by about 10:30 or 11:00. Depends on Sat Night.
I have designed a good padded case for the camera so it should be safe from any crashes( I hope )

I had a blast! It was great to see so many people out. It's odd when you see the same people at almost every race. The real core of MN and WI riders!
I will be there next year for sure!
Would it be a bad thing for all of us to send thank you's to the hill and the organizers? I think it would be a good idea. We should also try to push other hills towards something similar. How cool would it be to have a little winter DH series at all the little bunny hills in Minnesota! It could happen!
By my calculator, I see that the hill made well over a grand off lift fees! That's the bikers, and the few ski-bikers. Tell me they didn't like that!

For SURE. I didn't bring extra socks, and my draw's were wet! Two hours went by real slow!
Also, as a added note. I don't think there were any accidents between bikers and plankers. I'd say that's pretty good considering we were racing on a crowded hill! Plus, we have brakes!
EDIT- I did kind of piss off the plankers when I put a big rut in the double, oops! But at least they got to see me crash!

Hmmm, I'll do a search but the main supporters are Adventure Cycle and Ski winona MN. Redtail outfitters, winona mn.
