Trying to scrounge up interest in a Black Hills outing akin to MDH. Apparently some very nice, utterly SS'able trails abound in the region and see very little traffic.
Thinking it might be fun to caravan a bunch of folks out that way for some pedaling, beer pong and firepit j-hopping contests.

I have been riding the trails in the Black Hills for the past 12 years. I have ridden almost all of the ones listed on the link. I would like to mention one more that is awesome. The trail head is at the little spot on the road called Rockerville. IMBA has spent some time designing this trail and the locals have done most of the work plus I think they have at least one race each year on it. The trail ends at a church camp and then you have an ugly climb out on a gravel road.
You are right, I do not think I have seen more than one or two other riders on any of the trails when I have been there. I usually go 2-3 times each year. Do NOT go in August. It is hot and if they have a problem with black flys that is the time of the year that they are the worst.
I usually camp in Custer State Park. Great shower facilities etc. Campgrounds have plenty of space between sites so you don't feel as if you are camping with your neighbor.
Not sure when I will go out this year but usually my sons come up from Colorado and join me for riding there. There are also some houses for rent near Pactolla reservoir that I know about that are huge but run about $150 per night.
It is about 9 hours drive time from the southern metro to the hills but the riding is worth the drive!

Count me in! I'd like to go on several MTB trips this summer. So, if anyone has other trips planned, I'm interested.

Yeah, baby. Count me in! My brief drive through the Black Hills last Summer whetted my appetite for another visit. Let's do it ASAP. June?
I have often wondered about the quantity and quality of the trails out there, but it sounds like Tim Wegner can give us all the beta we need. I would even consider camping at the state park, else a hotel in Deadwood.
We might need a sober cab along for the trip.... Buck?

There's also a pretty nice lodge in Custer with a really good restaurant. Not sure how much it costs, the in-laws paid when we stayed there.
The only riding I've done out there was a pretty steep doubletrack trail in Custer, can't remeber what is was called, but I flatted and ended up wading through thigh high poison ivy.

I would like to do this. I am interested in doing a few rides this summer. I have a ton of vacation to use up, so I will use most of it on rides in other places. Keep me posted and we need to set a date, unless you have one in mind already.
Marty L. (martini) spent a couple of summers out there way back. He could give plenty of info on what to ride as well. I've ridden one nameless trail out their and got my but kicked by rocks, roots, steep climbs, and gnarly tight downhills. I loved it!

Well, late May or June works best for me. But not the MS150 weekend. :D My parents also have a pop-up tent trailer that would work, sleeps 6 comfortably or 9 crammed. Or, I have a large tent that sleeps 6. Or hotel will work. Any ideas on how long we'd go? I also might have other friends that might go.

There is a bike shop in Hill City that is run by a guy that offers guide service. Jan Lee used to hire him when he went riding out there and had nothing but good things to say about the trails they rode on. There also used to be a couple that lived in Silver City that had small cabins for rent. Rita and Tally Chapman, Rita was a cross country national (I think) champion way back when ALL bikes were rigid and Tally did several of the rides across america.
Tally took us on one ride that was 40 miles long. He wanted to go another 25 before our group pleaded with him to stop before we had to call the ambulance service to bring us home.
They had a daughter that rode with us on one of the rides. I think she was about 3-4 (she rode on a trailer bike) but Tally had put toe clips on her bike and she was able to get in to them and was expected to help peddle. Would be nice to see what an awesome rider she is now. I think that trip was about 8 years ago. If she continued to ride with parents like that she should be a pretty good rider maybe even competes in some of the races out there.

I am interested but the amount of vacation I have available may affect my going. Have you mentioned anything to Randy about relocating NAG? He sounded like he was OK with having it in the Black Hills the last time I talked to him.
I would definitely go if you wore your t-shirt "I LOVE TO FART" the whole trip.

...where is Mssr. Lieberg???
As it relates to my T-shirt, I will wear that shirt as long as you ride exclusively in your HS wrestling singlet, boots and headgear...behind me.

Ahhh. The Black Hills. Been too long since I've been there. 6 years I think? Dayum. I was under the impression that Randy was going to move the NAG to The BH's this year. I'll send an email out to him. I'd be really interested in going too. I'm pretty Sure Lisa would want to go to, but we'd have a tag-a-long fleshy appendage that's really freakin' cute.
There are some great trails out that-a-way. I've done most of my riding near the State Game Lodge where I worked-err--partied for a few summers. So I'm not that familiar with whats on the north side. August(or is it september?) has the Firehosue 50 or something epic race. The last time I was there we camped at a teeny little town crossed by the Centenial Trail that had nice sites for the tenters, and rentable cabins for those with more solid flooring likes that hold quite a few folks.

I doubt I will be the official organizer, but I will start trying to find
out what's happening. I really would like to get out there since I have
never been. I'll keep you posted.

Bummer... The fruita Fat Tire Festival is May 5-7. Erik's Spring Cup is on the 7th. MORC will be having a big presence at the Spring Cup, as we help put this on, and it's one of our major fundraisers. One of these days, I'm hoping to get out to the fruita fat tire festival...

I've been looking at that site Tim posted. The epic rides (http://www.bhcycling.com/epic.html) look fun, I'm also intrested in the southern hills (http://www.bhcycling.com/southern.html). Heck, any trail (http://www.bhcycling.com/rides.html) looks good to me. Any more progress on this? Need me to work on something? Anytime after May 17 works best for me, college.

I think one of the last weekends in May or the first weekend of June seem to be good. June 4th and 5th??? I like that weekend and maybe take Friday off to have the 3rd too. Is Memorial Say weekend May 28th, 29th, and 30th??
Throw some opinions down.
