Oh, this is such a blast. I could watch that video again and again. I did this in San Fran. but I would love to do it in NY City. I have done it here in Minneapolis many times, but you have to wait for a big event to do it. My favorite is when we used to go to Saint Anthony Main for the 4th and after the fireworks we would wait about 20 minutes until the roads got all packed with cars. Then we flew down Hennepin Av until we got to Uptown and then Lake Calhoun. If you want to do it more often, find out when balls games are going on or concerts. Then wait until the roads get packed after the show and blast through the traffic.

A few rules to go by. You can't wear a helmet when doing this. Don't scratch anyones car. If some jerk sees you coming and opens their door on you, make sure and take out a mirror or window or something. Slow down in Intersections as they are the most unpredictable. Not just cross traffic, but people changing lanes and turning.

Cool video, and just in case it's not obvious, many if not all of those guys are riding brakeless fixies. That kind of notches the craziness up a bit.

I used to do my own version of this in La Crosse, different level of traffic of course and with a freewheel and gears.

Heading North or South?

South would be no big deal as it would be all up hill. but if you are coming from West St. Paul and flying down that hill, that's a different story.

Robert North of the river would be intersting also as you are heading right through down town toward the capital.

Who's up for trying it after the parade at the Winter Carnival? Something you could only do in St. Paul. A winter version of the ride seen in the video.

I'm up for doing this maybe ... um ... NEVER :).

It'd make one hell of a video game though, wouldn't it? It'd be as fun as a first person shooter. And, just like a first person shooter, I'd rather do it via computer than in real life! :hit:

About 20 years ago on a family trip to San Fransisco when I was late getting back to my family during the evening rush after a ride, I spotted a bicycle messanger going my way just as I was entering downtown. I hopped in behind him and told him I was in a big hurry, don't worry, I know how to ride in a city, and I'd stay with him as long as he was going my way.

It wasn't real risky as far as interaction with traffic, but he saved me a lot of of time on all the little back alley short cuts & time savers.

I contemplated a second career as a bike messanger after I retired, but good sense got the better of that idea.

Yeah, the fixie no brakes thing would be nuts. I only did this kind of stuff on my BMX bike or a mountain bike I am comfortable with. You really need to know how to handle your bike to do this safely. Also, it looks a lot scarier than it really is.

I do it in duluth, bombin down down the hills passin' traffic, I've only been hit once luckily I had a helmet and it was the drivers fault legally. But I know some long boarders that do the same thing down the hills up here, now that is f-in nutz!!! They drift corners going faster then traffic, just insane...

I rally traffic like that on Hennipen Ave every day going home from work, except only in the summer time. Winter the roads are to sketchy and people just aren't looking for bikes as much as they do in the summer. They must think biking is a warm-weather only activity or something......

You can get a small taste of this style of riding on Saturday, Feb. 5, in the 8th Annual Stupor Bowl, put on by the Minneapolis Bike Messenger Association. (www.mbma.net) If you're not riding in the winter, then I guess it is a "warm-weather sport."

Hey Hurl,

I could provide the equipment and wire you up if you want to get get footage from your point of view during the stupor.

I would even offer to edit it if no-one else wanted to. Show the "big boys" how it's done in "The Land of Sky Blue Waters"

I plan on showing up if for nothing else then to ride, but there is no way my view of the event would be as good as yours or GeneO's

Let me know
James

Yeah, I worded that badly. I still ride in the winter, just a little more cautiously. The drivers don't seem to be as alert to bikers as they do in the warmer months.

Might have to check out the Stupor, sounds like fun.
