Been looking at some winter riding pants from Gill(at performancebike), REI has a couple and Raceface has the aquanots. Is anyone using these or can you suggest another bike specific type riding pant that is wind/water proof? Any other suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the help everyone

I'd go with the REI pants. They are probably made in the same plant as the race face pants anyway...

I have the REI pants, but haven't tested them in the rain yet. They are tapered in the lower leg with a reinforcement patch on the inside of the right leg. They are also cut to fit well in the riding position. Go check them out. I picked mine up on sale for ~$55 if I remember right.

The REI pants, in combination with some sort of tights, have worked for me very well. They're nice becuase they're actually tapered in enough at the calf and ankle to avoid getting chainsucked.

I have a pair of Fly racing BMX or DH style pants that I got on closeout from JensonUsa. They work great with long underwear under them, and they are tapered enough at the ankles to not get all caught up.
Ever heard of Roach??? RaceFace bought the name and the rights to that company in '02 or sometime around there...I have a pair, they kick ass, throw on some long underwear and you'd be fine. As for durability I have had mine since '01 the reason I need a new pair is b/c I messed up on a stair gap and slid from concrete to pavement, burned a whole threw them...if you are doin that...well comes with that kinda of ridin!

I've got a pair of Preformance winter tights and I actually like them. The have a heavy wind and water resistant fleece front, crotch and butt and just heavy lycra on the back of the legs. They can be had with or with out a pad. They are not rain pants but work ok for that. I use them as my XC ski pants as well. If it goes below 10 degrees I'll add a layer of polypro long undies. http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=18100&subcategory_ID=1121#

Looks like I have some more options and have some things figured out now. Looks like REI has two different styles as well, anyone have experience with both or just one type, if one type which ones?

...at Erik's on closeout. For the most part I've found any truly wind/waterproof pant to be too much as they trap heat coming off your legs and convert it to condensation making your tights wet.
A good pair of winter tights (or two) I think is the better solution. PI, Borah and others make a winter tight that has wind resistant thigh panels but still breaths.
As others have said, these can be used for XC skiing, running, etc in cold weather very effectively.

I cannot provide much of an opinion on the REI pants. But, I do have the Randonee jacket and I think it is one of the best rain garments I have ever owned for cycling. Very intelligently designed. I might just have to try the pants someday too, though I never have a problem with cold legs.

I have the REI Headwind pants and they work great! I think I picked them up for $50-60 on sale. I would say water resistant to a point, but not really intended for that. I Wear them over base layer(s) for colder temps. Wind resistant on the front, ventilating on the back. Not padded, so I wear lycra chamois shorts underneath for cushion and support. A zipped back pocket, zips at the ankles, drawstring at the waist.
Like Lars, I wear these for X-Country skiing too.

I would second the performance tights. I've had a pait for 5 - 6 years. I've used for XC skiiing as well as riding.

I've been commuting in the winter for 3 years now. I wear a pair of Old Navy cargo pants one size too small (in my case size small) These are perfect for biking and perfect for layering. They are extremely baggy 'cause that is the fashion for the yutes today, therefore they are excellent for layering. They are too short which is perfect for keeping the pants out of the gearing. The best part is you can likely get a pair for $10.
