View Full Version : What's your ride?

I've been poking around here for a little while and I'm at the beginning of my journey to buying a new ride. So I thought I'd throw this out here, I guess I'm just wondering what everyone is riding here in the great state of MN. I've been checking out some other forums and nobody really is riding in MN much, so their views are kind of skewed. So there it is... what's in everyone's quiver?

Cheers!

There's a pretty big mtn bike community here who ride quite a bit actually. I think we tend to have different styles of bikes than other mtn bike areas because of the lack of elevation gains, but I see some pretty good riders on some pretty high buck custom bikes. That said, I only own front suspension steel framed bikes. If I was rich, I'd have all kinds. I'd own some full suspensions, a 29er and a single speed if I had the money and storage space! Oh well, welcome to the boards, you'll find plenty of people here that are really into Minnesota Mtn biking and also all the work that goes into the trail advocacy and trail work that we do.

I ride a khs softail team. i like it. As you can imagine, there are not a lot of bumps jumps drops around here so i think its a good idea to shave weight at the expense of an extra cush suspension.

2004 Specialized Stumpjumper hardtail. All stock! I'm too big for FS (or too cheap!!!).

Don't worry about being too big for a FS... I come in at 6'4", 210 - 230 (depending on time of year ;) ) and ride a full suspension bike....

2002 YETI AS-R
Decked out for superlightweight
Full XTR (excluding cassette - XT)
FSA Carbon Cranks
Easton Carbon Seatpost
Magura Julie disc breaks
Ritchie Stem and Bar
757 pedals
Fox RL shock

I have been riding this bike for 3 years now without any major problems (other than replacing the XTR cassette twice before switching to the XT) It is more about maintenance than anything else... for us bigger people, keeping chains clean and lubed and shocks properly cared for adds years to bikes...

I tend to ride longer rides (big fan of the 12 and 24 hour races!!!) and had the bike in California for one year racing it at Big Bear and around SoCal...

Granted, not an off the shelf bike, but specifically built for my riding style and demands... (custom frame as well!) But you can do it!!!

For minnesota, I ride this as much as my Hardtail, which is an old '92 vintage Specialized M2 with XT components and an old Manitou shock with elastomers... Sweet ride!!!

I'm also on the larger side of the cycling spectrum, at 6 feet tall and about 210 lbs. I prefer to ride full suspension as well. In fact, I just finished building my new dream bike.
2005 Turner five spot
Marzocchi Z1 freeride fork
Hope Mono M4 brakes
Chris King headset
Thompson seatpost and stem
MaxM carbon bars
Raceface turbine lp cranks
Time atac pedals
and a mix of XTR and XT components

I do still own a hardtail that I ride on occassion as well.
1996 Mark Zeh custom steel framed hardtail
Rock Shox sid fork
Syncros stem
Profile carbon bars
Chris King heaset (is their any other kind)
USE seatpost
Time atac pedals
everything else is old school XTR

Then there's the roadbike and the cyclocross bikes. But I won't talk about those here, after all this is a mountain bike site;)

Just picked up a 2004 Specialized Epic Marathon so it is stock for now, except for new Race Face grips and new shifter cables. Need to swap the cassette to a 11-32.

Converting my Ti frame hardtail to SS. Work in progress as my E-bay purchases arrive (New stem, bars, Salsa ring and bashguard....)

Hard Rock rigid winter beater with studded tires.

Cannondale Super V 2000 collecting dust that I need to sell so I can get a roadie.

Dyno Duece, the pimp (short trip) commuter ride.

They all are perfect (at least to me) for the terrain around here. The SC has 4" rear and 3" front travel and that's almost too much for a lot of the trails here. Except Afton Alps at 2:00 AM, when I could have used about 7"-8" to keep my lame a$$ upright!

I used own a Green Machine but I had to switch back to a big wheel. I just didn't like the braking on the green machine.
Like, when I would go down a really big hill I could'nt do the 360+ spinout brake action. I also found that the tires on the green machine were not as durrable. After a few hundred skids the plastic was worn clean through.

Seriously folks...you can't beat this action

Hmmmm,

I'm on a Bighit Expert w/ 888, rollin on dub 24s, kenda rubbers on sun rims w/hadley hubs. Drive train is XT w/ a blackspire 40 tooth ring on truvativ kranks, all protected by a EVIL STS chainguide with odessey pedals...hayes brakes w/ 8 rotors, stock bars and seat. mmmm, what a great bike set-up soft for railin' flowy DHs, but progessive enough to huck and ride park. This past year I became a convert:

Single speed, baby!

I'm currently riding single on an aluminum Gary Fisher Mt. Tam frame but want to swap that out with the current "wife bike" frame in the shape of a 19'' Specialized RockHopper Comp frame from '99. It's when they made this weird "nitanium" composite material that's part steel, part nickel and part titanium or summin ... basically, it's light but rides like steel. I wanna turn that into my single and throw the old rigid fork on 'er then upgrade my platforms to get more grip. That's right: platforms, baby! Only wussies ride clipped in.

... oh, and I also have a '01 M4 StumpJumper with TIME pedals and a seatpost suspension that's pretty sweet, too. Needs a new drivetrain, though ...

'99 Kona Kula with a custom paint job, XT/XTR and a rigid fork.

'98 Fisher Aquila converted to horizontal drops by Bob Brown for ss, with a bunch of junk parts on it

'02 Trek Bruiser 2 - stock except for a '99 BOmber Z1 Alloy fork

'95 Stumpjumper M2 that currently has drop bars, cheap STI shifters, a Tiagra road crank and smooth 1" tires - winter training bike

'9X Trek X01 cyclocross - XTR/Dura Ace and Ultegra

'04 Giant TCR Composite 1 - Ultegra/Ksyrium SL's

And soon to be either a '04 or a '05 Juan Solo with all the old parts from the Caballero on it. (XT/XTR, SID World Cup, Sun/DT disc wheels, Avid mech. discs) Will start life as a singlespeed but may turn geared at some point. Hoping to get it under 21 lbs....

1993 GT RTS-1 - converted to FSSS, but will probably add a 2nd chainring so I can have a road gear and a trail gear (still no front derailleur though, just manual shifting).

2003 Kona Stinky - pretty much stock.

I really enjoy having 2 very different bikes, adds some variety when you regularly ride the same trails. Both are a great time on the local trails.

Soon to be...
Fetish Cycles Discipline - another SS conversion, this one's fully rigid. Should be fun - a frame that's a bit on the small side, a short stem, 2" rise bars, fat tires and platforms. I'm with ya Chris D!!

Certainly some exciting rides people have. Here's a sampling of mine:

Off-Roadish:

Phil Wood / Independent Fabrication PISSOFF #32
Co-Motion custom True Temper OX. Fixed gear conversion, rigid.
Trek 9.9 OCLV frame - project brewing for dedicated fixed gear
Roadish:

Waterford "Adventure Series" custom fully loaded touring bike
Rivendell - Custom road. Mavic components-very Riv.
Rivendell - Custom All-Rounder. Just got done being made: http://yokanovich.home.comcast.net/Rivbike.htm At Joe Bell getting paint. Mostly NOS first generation XTR (M900) components sitting in boxes awaiting assembly.
Tommaso - mid 80's Columbus SL with all Campy. (My first good road bike.)
Cannondale - early 90's, custom paint. 26" wheel "All-Rounder" style off-road touringish type thing. This frame has seen many different itterations. The components are WAY too nice for this frame....
Miscellaneousish:

1993 Trek 520 touring frame, turn singlespeed. Primary commuter and winterbike. (Last of the lugged steel Treks) Needs to visit Bob Brown and get a re-paint.
Unknown brand - Orange road bike. Fixed gear conversion with Rivendell Albatross bars and a Brooks saddle. A favorite.
Unknown year - vintage steel Diamond Back mountain bike. Singlespeed conversion. Steel Wald basket on the front. Super old laid-back geometry with super-long wheelbase. Great commuter.

I've got a mid 90's Diamondback that is my commuter. Low end drivetrain stuff, but I'm digging the steel frame and rigid fork. Will probably convert this to single or fixed over the summer. Might need new wheels too...

My main ride will be a steel 29er made by Walt at Waltworks. Great guy to talk to and work with, plus beauty prices. XT, SRAM parts mainly with a White Brothers fork (the blingiest part she'll initally get). I should be getting everything in in a week or two... can't wait to build it up.

XC - O4 On-One Inbred Geared custom built with some of my old parts and some new ones, like the Sram X9 stuff.....:)

Freeride - 03 Specialized P.2 which is the dirt jumper hardtail. Only upgrade so far will be a new Stance Static fork to replace the EXR Comp I bent.

Trials - Late 90's Ross 20" Chromoly Mod

Road - 00 GT Z1000 with an aluminum fork....ouch on every bump.

BMX/Street - 01 Haro Mirra Pro (USA Model) frame custom built to my liking with some newer lighter components.

Which one is my favorite??? I would still have to say my BMX bike. I have more fun and freedom on that thing than any other bike I own. But my new On-One comes a close second. It's the first mountain bike I have ever riden/owned that has good handling......and I mean good quick responsive handling unlike most XC bikes on the market. It's the long frame and super short stem that make it feel soooooo goooood. I will argue this geometry (long frame short stem) until I die!!!

'95 Fisher Mt. Tam polished aluminum hardtail (last year before Trek began building Fishers I think?). The OEM bar, stem, front derailleur, and one of the SRAM X-ray twisters (will be replaced this winter/spring with new SRAM) are all that remain from '95 parts. I still have the original Judy XC (first year of production?) but it has been converted with an Englund Air Kit.

I also have my '81 or '82 Hutch Pro Racer with Skyway Graphite Tuff Wheels from my BMX racing days. I haven't ridden it in 18 years! It hangs in the garage. Someday I will have to hop on and take it for a spin. I suppose I will need new rubber.

That's it! Two bikes. Ride one. Dreaming about more. I really want a MTB tandem! And a road bike. And an "all-moutain" dualie. And a singlespeed. And a one of those with the new gear box techno. A chopper. A commuter.

And a new garage.

I'm jealous of the Haro... I had an original Torker, the one Bob Haro himself designed before he went off on his own (or so I was told when I was 13). I just can't part with my Haro. I remember that it was hard to get Haro's in this part of the country back then. I had to order it through a bike shop in Cali. It's the neon powder blue color. I don't ride it all that often but I still do from time to time just to keep the feeling of a 20 inch ride. That's too bad about your Torker. Those were cool bikes.:etard:

Soon to be...
Fetish Cycles Discipline - another SS conversion, this one's fully rigid. Should be fun - a frame that's a bit on the small side, a short stem, 2" rise bars, fat tires and platforms. I'm with ya Chris D!!

Hey Tall Pete, did you ever build up the fetish ride?

Others, any feedback on fetish frames?

Yup... no shocks, one gear.

The frame was something like $99 on eBay. I couldn't pass it up. It's worked out well so far. No problems. They aren't anything special - as far as I can tell it's a Taiwanese built Aluminum frame sold by a company in AZ.

Do a search of the MTBR.com forums - you'll find more info there.
