View Full Version : Tire talk
Hey all, I'm plannin g a trip to Moab in mid-April, and I'm going to need new tires before I go out there. I know from past trips out there that the slick rock, and the terrain in general, can really destroy a set of tires.
I've been riding a pair of MTB Mutano Raptors in the 2.4 width for a couple seasons now. As a matter of fact, they are the first tire I've ever been happy enough with to buy a second set of, after wearing through the first. Even though I've been pretty happy with the overall performance of these tires, I want to try something new, especially for out West. I want to stick with a wider tire (2.4 or there abouts), and I don't think I need anything too aggressive, like a DH tire. I plan on riding these tires for our local trails as well.
Any opinions?

I am also going to be in Moab, but at the end of April. As far as tires go, someone I trust (thanks, Douglas) suggested the Hutchinson Pythons. I know they aren't very wide at 2.0", but they are supposed to wear very well. I'm going to try those especially because they aren't too expensive.

I went with the Panaracer Fire XC Pro. 2.1 in the front and 1.8 in the rear. Per suggestion from Gravity Lab. I am extremly happy with them. They worked great at Maa Daa Hey and the local trails here.
Eric,
When I was on a trip to Moab back in spring of 02, I ended up peeling off some rubber and had to pick up a new set. Friends all had em, so I got some Panaracer 2.1 Fire XC Pros (first time) and they worked out awsome for the slick rock and the single track out there, really grippy on the rock. I actually still have these tires on a beater, with lots of tread, (dry rotting though after 2.5 years). Since I liked them so much and they held up good I went to some 2.3 DH Pro's this past year, and those rock too. They also have a 2.4 FR version now. Good tires, true to indicated size, and perform well on the slickrock, only down side is they are a harder rubber, so on wet smooth surfaces like wood they suck, but then again most tires do.
