Due to part of the Hartley Trail being on private property, a poorly made reroute was "built" this summer. Please stay off the private property, the trail is closed with orange snow fence and the reroute is marked with arrows.
Unfortunately, the City will not let another reroute be built or the bandit reroute be fixed.
Here's a link (http://mtnbykr.5u.com/photo.html) to a map showing the closed area.[circled on the map]
Please pass this on to anyone who uses this trail.

Is that the part that went through the pines? I cant read Hartley on a map, only just ridden there enough to know my way around the trail.

nope, the pines are below/south of the pond on the map. [the map sux also]
this closed part is off of kenwood ave, which goes by st scholastica college. the trail has been there for many, many years. this summer the owner decided they didn't want anybody using it.
no big loss really, but the reroute follows the original trail up the slope. coulda been built better but nobody told me this was happening [poor excuse i know but i was off the bike all summer]. my boss [the city of duluth] doesn't exactly know where the park boundaries are so no new trail there...

I tell ya what Kurt,
After talking to you last night, maybe we should rebuild that re-route this spring, then that little downhill part we should armor...I can't remember a time I went out there when it wasn't wet! and wouldn't it be sweet to have a fun little section of bombin rocks??? make on side smooth for the hikers and one side a little rougher or something??? That would be rad...

Is that section of trail still usable with the private property section fenced off, where does the reroute run?

i hadn't thought of rocks. 1 idea was to make a wider boardwalk for the hikers/timid bikers and a 2nd skinny board for the brave bikers. i'll keep my eyes open for rock/concrete.

the reroute is slightly east of the original trail. can't miss it, follow the arrows.

it would be awesome if there were some rocks thrown in there. I think boards might still be an option, there are one or two spots it would be nice to lengthen the boards where the mud is getting bad, I would help with that in the spring if anyone wanted to work on it, i definately say if we add a wider board to keep a skinny board. I can get wood cheap too, my roommate works at menards.
Hey if any ya'll need work on your mountain bike in the spring come to Stewart's bike and sport on Superior street and ask for Jeff, I need to meet some more local bikers besides the shop guys, they are all roadies.

You work at Stewart's? My friends Dad used to work there. He still might for all I know. Last name is Hanson.
That is what armoring is, kinda of like burying rocks to make the track that would ride on cool thing si you can make it super hard, or super smooth, as for the ladders, I did notice that in a few spots people aren't even using them...so maybe longer would be better and wide enough that people will actually use them. We could even run a skinny off one side for more of a challenge!
