im debating between these two right now, I would like some other opinions out there. or some other bikes that are in the 1,000 dollar range that you would suggest that are better bikes or more for the money. thanks in advance,

bike is for cross country, but i need a durable bike for trips out west and etc.

Buying a new bike is so much fun!..

I am partial to the big S, because of FSR, whatever you buy.. Pick your Frame first, then consider Disc Brakes, they are one of the few components which are difficult/expensive to up-grade.

I have an 03 FSR Disc.. The only thing I don't like is the fork, Manitou Axel. It was like riding with a Pogo Stick, then I had some thicker oil put in and it's ok, not great, just ok... I'll be looking for an upgrade when I can afford it.

I stringly encourage you to check out the Jamis line @ Now Sports. I think Jamis offers outstanding value at all price points; far better value than Specialized or Fisher in my opinion. Now Sports may have some especially good deals right now.

Good luck

Yes, The Jamis line looks fairly decent

I would consider the Jamis Dakar XC Comp, which is the bike I might buy next year between a Specialized FSR, Weyless Sp and Haro XLS R5. The Jamis comes with Manitou Black Elite 100mm travel. It weighs 27.75 pounds. Avid Disk Brakes Front and Back. Fox Float R Shock 90 mm of travel

i may have sold my sugar 2 but it really was a sweet ride - same frame as the 4 - only negative i can report was chain suck - cured that with a race face crank - if you go w/the sugar upgrade the crank or at least the chainrings if they will work with you - penn may still have some 03's reduced
