Can anyone give a recommendation on a good freeride wheelset?
Which would be the best if money was no option?
Which would be the best in value (performance / $)?
Patrick

...what exactly are you going to do with them? Also, how heavy are you?
Adam is a motherhucker and needs uber burly wheels for his Big Hit. I've seen him in action.
I go 250# and I'm not easy on stuff - but I'd also likely never ride off something more than 4' high. I get by on Mavic F519s, F219, and 321s just fine as well as Rynolites (although they can be a PITA with certain tires). Syncros has just come back with some solid rims as well for "trail/FR" use.
If you are going to launch off stairs and do a lot of DJing - invest in some beefy wheels. XT hubs are a good value. Next up would be Hopes. Then Kings. Hadleys are nice but they're almost as expensive as Kings and lack the famous CK engagement. They are very stout though and have a good rep.
Contact Larry Mettler or Speedgoat for wheels. Reed at One on One is a wheel ninja as well. Hard to go wrong.
Sack up and get the CK hubs. If you don't, you'll always be lusting for them. Make up the difference my running LX instead of XTR everywhere else. XTR ain't worth it and XT is just silver painted LX (saved some chainring bolt differences).

WHAT??? You my good sir have never ridden on a Hadley rear hub, the hook up is unbelievable and they have just as many engagement points as the CK hubs. But other than that I would look at Ringle stuff but not the mammoth or Rhynolite, I think they suck, I've seen way to many of them destroyed...but he is right, depends on what you use them for...my wheels were spendy but I didn;t do it all at once I spread it out, first I blew up my rear hub on stair gaps then blew up my front wheel doin a drop. :p Now I have a rock solid wheelset that should last for another season! :D ;)

I build halfway decent wheels, too.
I've used Sun Singletracks, and Mavic EX729's without a problem. The mavic's do tend to flat spot easily, though.
King, Hadley, and Dt Swiss are all good choices for hubs. Lace those up to a pair of Sun MTX's and you'll have a nice wheelset. For budget, XT hubs laced to Singletracks would work out just fine. I'm assuming this is for a bike with disc brakes.
The key to a strong wheelset is a good wheelbuilder. The strength in the wheel comes from the build.
LOL, yeah I build my own wheels that is THE only way to go...hand built last WAY looooooooooooonger then any of that machine made crap! XT are alright but if you want hubs to last I would look elsewhere, they are cheap for a reason.
