Sweet I have disc brakes, but how the heck do I mount the bike on my Steel Head roof rack? Is there some adapter or something that stands the fork up more for clearance of the caliper?

I just looked it up, and it seems like I have to get a whole new bike mount now...The Viper. That is so lame that a bike upgrade requires you to get a new bike rack too! As if I didn't spend enough on the new fork, wheelset, and brake system. I hate companies that lock you into stuff like this.
Maybe I'll just take my sawsall and notch out a chunk near the caliper for clearance and then weld a chunk of steel in there for ridgidity. They ain't getting any more of my money!

Even the Vipers won't clear certain fork/caliper combos. I took a Dremel to the Viper to make a wee bit of clearance for one bike but my Z1 with 185mm rotor caliper will not fit...at all. Has to do with the orientation of the IS tabs on some forks meant to work with 185-200mm rotors.

Anyway - spend $50 on a Fork Up before you spend your money on a new Viper tray which may not solve your problems.

These are also handy to have on trips where you may be using someone else's rack/trays. Eliminates all compatibility issues.

Note - Larry Mettler at www.mtnhighcyclery.com will beat this price.

That is basically what I am going to build myself. The fork up will solve the problem but I really need lock cores. So I bought a universal locking skewer (Yak) and am going to make my own for up with that.

...not sure how easy it is to fab the Fork Up body but you could still just buy the Fork Up and replace their standard QR with a Yak locker.

 oh yeah!
I just modified the steel head to work.
I said F it, and decided that cutting a little notch in the side of the tray to make clearance for the caliper was not going to compromise the rigidity of the tray much.

I just marked it out, cut with a small jigsaw with metal cutting blade and then finished it with a couple different files.

So check it out:

These pics are before I primed the exposed metal, and then I will follow up with some black paint.

I have a vintage yakima lock that clears up all issues with disc brakes since it can be mounted in any direction. Also own a few Steelhead trays that had a discussion with Mr. Dremel, now they are more than willing to play nice with disc systems.

PatrickMy stable has a few rides hanging around including:
Ventana El Fuego
Ventana El Toro Single Speed
Ventana X-5
Independent Single Speed
Titus Switch Blade (For Sale Wife is directing me to thin the heard)
Bianchi road

Which bike I ride really depends on the trail/event/and my mood at that moment. BTW I'm also a local dealer for Ventana/Titus/IF/and a few other customs.

Titus makes some really interesting stuff. I test rode some of their bikes when I lived in Mesa, and the trials were lousy with them. Switchblades seemed to be the weapon of choice for the most part, though a few Quasimotos were around. Exogrid frames are a sight to see. The owner of the LBS I frequented had an Exogrid single speed, with an XTR wheelset, World Cup SID, and carbon everything else. It was scary light, but oh so sweet. Scary expensive too.
