I am having a problem with my rear derailleur. It wants to shift down, larger ring. I need to fix this, so all I should have to do is loosen the cable right? Thanks for you help.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The trick Mr. Douglas Holtz taught me was to put the chain in the 7th gear on a 9sp and tighten the barrel adjuster on the derailleur so that it's just trying to shift to the next gear larger. Then turn the barrel adjuster back about 3/4's of a turn (give or take a 1/4 turn). I've found this to work well almost everytime. Doug listed it as an OK rule of thumb but it's worked for me.

But on the trail what I do when I'm having trouble is to just turn it 1/4 turn in whatever direction I think is needed. If it's trying to go to the larger gear then yes, try turning 1/4 turn looser at a time until it's staying in gear.

Don't forget, some shift levers have adjusters too. I have dialed mine while riding and that's slick stuff dude.......don't even slow down....just reach and twist. Facing lever turning clockwise is losening the cable and should put you in a harder (smaller ring) gear. Turning counter clockwise is tightening the cable and should shift you into an easier (bigger ring) gear.

As long as you don't have that lame Rapid Rise stuff, this should work.

Also keep in mind that the adjusters on the shift levers are more "fine tuning" adjusters. I use them as well, like shad does (on the fly), but only if I'm pretty sure I know which direction to turn them. If you are unclear if your chain is rising or falling I would turn the barrel adjuster 1/4 turn then see if it gets better or worse. If worse, then turn it the other way. :)
