what is the preferred ss crankset? i have a dimension 110 bcd / 175mm and i think the smallest chainring available is 34t - i want to have the option of running 30t and 32t and from what i've read i gotta go to a compact 94 bcd - i'd prefer to leave my bb alone for now - now bb's that a whole other kettle of smells - the frame is an old cro-mo rockhopper if that helps any - im in way over my head on this and any help would be appreciated - el

are you running a freewheel hub or a converted geared hub/dedicated ss hub??

on the freehub/ss hub, you can bust up a cassette and use the bigger gears to make up the difference. surly is also coming out w/ killer big rear gears.

freewheel, you're stuck w/ 20t maybe a 22t.

you might not need to change your bb to change cranks either.

If your running a standard crank 110mm then your stuck with the 34t chainring. Only way to get it down to a 32 or 30 is with a compact setup 94mm. If you dont want to change out your BB (assuming square taper) then find some old cranks laying around. I know of a few shops that have some old RF cranks (Penn) and unfortunatly they think that old stock still means full sticker.

Good luck. BTW if you would like a few 34t chainrings I have a new Blackspire and Spot ring taking up space.

hey, thanks for the offer, but i have a 34t and the 32t - i've found a couple of options online - the rf north shore, azonic 454 w/spider, azonic carbon wrap, and fsa power pro - i'm leaning towards the 454 - any input?

Dang, I knew if I created a Freeride area it would end up causing issues... if they get one, and if Singlespeeders get one - how about downhillers.. cross country riders... ?

I guess I could see XC being the main "theme" of the boards, with Racing, Freeriding, Road Riding and Singlespeeds being separated... but will this confuse people? Would someone new think we're not into other types of riding?

Sorry... the topic came up, so I hijaked the thread for a minute. ;)

most ssers are already confused....

i see it the same as freeriding [kinda sorta]. the want for a forum has always been there, just not voiced. so yes, maybe it's your fault, john, for doing the freeride forum  .

let's try it, can't hurt anything....[he sez in a begging voice.]
