Jutst got an e-mail from the IMBA offices and I have a deadline of November 1 to request a visit from the IMBA Trail Care Crew for 2005. I want to open the possiblity of a trail care crew visit to other areas in addition to the Metro area. I think we have done a lot in the metro but the outstate area has been underserved. I would like you to e-mail me if you think a visit would be appropriate for your area in 2005.
In the past a visit from the TCC has usually resulted in substantial progress being made with the land managers in the area. We have begun building some great trails as a result of those visits.
Let me know the specifics of where you would like to have the visit, when, what area will we be working on and what would you like to accomplish with the visit.

Seeing as I don't live here anymore...I don't really have a foot to stand on in terms of offering places to go. But I'll do it anyways...
I think a great place for them to go would be either Winona and Holzinger(my fav choice since I only live 1½ hrs from there) or up to Duluth/Spirit Mtn. I'll try to email a suggestion to you later too.

I second Winona and Holzinger, they are great places to ride! I also agree with you Tim on outside of the metro area. We have done A LOT within the metro and need to also begin to focus on the entire state.
D
Heck yeah I say Spirit also, they have some incredible terrain for some more DH/FR oriented trails...or maybe down at Steeple Chase, maybe that will help jump start what they are doing. Or Winona, I am near all those locations at some point either fall and spring or summer, so all of them sound good to me...and they are right time to move to the great area of MN!!!
Thanks!!!

Clarification--I am the IMBA rep for Southern MN so although I agree Duluth area has unbelievable potential I will be focusing my request for IMBA visits to areas South of the Metro area if possible,

Does it have to be on public land? If not, here's my vote: Steeplechase!!

Nope it does not have to be on public land. Steeple Chase would make a good choice.
TW
I vote for Winona area too.
I say we go for Steeple Chase, if they are serious about having good bike trails, it would be cool to give it a boost by having a trail building class there or hot spot thing, although I would like to see a FR trail there obviously, I think any trail would be cool wether it be a full on DH course or some sweet flowin XC! Count me in!!!

Steeple Chase here. I think we need a different type of trail care lessons, which is kind of what this is. We know how to build killer XC and even XX trails.....look at Leb....it Rocks. Now we need to move in new directions and get new ideas to help in the new movement........freeride.
Getting knowledge on IMBA standard freeride stuff would be nice......I guess that's what I am trying to say.
Heck yeah Shad,
why build a sidewalk in the trees...BUILD IT HIGH, BUILD IT SKINNY!!! woohoo, oh yeah and build some wider stuff to huck off!!!

Adam and all,
Just so you know, the Backcountry Patrol and COGGS are working with Northern MN IMBA Rep Kurt Lange to set up something in the North Country too.
Ride safe,

Thanks for all the input here for trail school for next year. Right now I am leaning towards Steeple Chase if we can get permission. Steeple Chase area would allow MORC and all to learn how to build some trails with more "edge" and challenge than we have built in the past and learn to build them correctly.
Keep the suggestions coming in, I don't have to send in my request until the end of October.

Dumb questions. Where is Steeple Chase? And what about the Taylor's Falls area? The terrain up there looks like it would be great to ride.

Steeple Chase is a ski area south of the metro near cannon falls and mazeppa. Taylors falls would be great but several things against it:1. Where would we have the school 2. If we found land to build on it would need to be private land since public land managers are not willing to build the extreme type trails we hope to do at the school in 2005. 3. No local bike club or group that we could include in building the trails 4. Taylors Falls technically lies outside of the area that the Southern Minnesota IMBA Rep covers.
Taylors falls definitley hold potential for the future. Maybe at a State Park near there.

Gotcha. I know where Cannon Falls is due to Scout camp. I was unsure of the land ownership situation up at Taylor's Falls. Is there a State Park up there? Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Yeah there is a State Park on boths sides of the river, Interstate State Parks. Both could make some rockin' trails, I have hiked both.

Yes, that would be great if we could build trails there. I drive by it every time I go to my relatives in WI. However, I don't think it'll happen because of the high hiking traffice. It is also very crammed back there and not much room for more trails, VERY steap as well. But, it'd be cool!

HansHey I'm intersted in doing some serious FR stuff at Spirit Mt. I've been hikin out there and know that you could make some Killer lines, through some of the wooded area where permanent wooden structures would not intefere with the skiing, and I know where to get some cedar to build with...ooo...cedar structures... ...mmm...Freeride...hit me back...

adam,
first, come up w/ a plan. where these stunts would be on the hill, who would pay for the materials, who would be building them, who would be responsible for maintaining them.
next, go to the coggs (http://www.coggs.com) meeting that should be next tuesday [oct 12] and present them w/ your plan. they would/ should be able to contact spirit mtn and see if they have anyissues w/ this type of development and also if the city's/spirit's/coggs insurance would cover these stunts.
then, after all this has been taken care of, line up a crew of like-minded individuals and go for it.

Kurt,
Sounds great, where are these meetings at??? I checked out the website and I couldn't find it.

now the meetings should be in someplace in superior, wi. the pres usually emails their list on monday. when i get a notice, i'll pass it on to you.
if you're serious about fr and trails at spirit, you should get something together to show coggs this is needed in duluth. they've heard it from me but....
edit: i can't guarantee that you'll get a favorable response, but if you think it's worth a try, i'll back you.
kl
Any idea of what I should kinda of say??? Like maybe a video clip??? How bout like a petition from FRers showing that there is interest? I've never presented something like this before so any advice would be great, I plan on being at Spirit to map out the run I was thinkin of in the morning. Edit: I sent you an e-mail!
Thanks again.
