Headset problem.

I just put a new handlebar and stem on my '02 Klein Attitude, and there's a little bit of play that won't come out of my headset, it's a chris king. Any body had this problem?and yes Idid loosen the stem before I tightened everything.

--loosen them stem bolts
--loosen starnut bolt (top cap bolt)

--tighten starnut bolt until snug
--straighten bars
--tighten stem bolts until snug, but loose enuf to move bar
--move stem/bar right to left to see if its smooth, if to loose, tighten starnut, if tight, loosen starnut
--check smoothness again
--tighten stem bolts to proper torque

--apply front brake, rock bike back and forth, feel for play
--turn wheel so its 90 deg to frame, apply front brake check for play there too (sometimes play the first way is your suspension fork bushings or brake mounts)
--if you have play loosen stem bolts, tighten starnut bolt, recheck play ect..

--if you have no play, loosen starnut bolt, then tighten until just snug

--go ride!

If you have someone to help you too, you can rock it straight on and in order to check the fork or brakes, apply the brakes and rock, but have the other person hold the brake mounts, if there is no play with them doing that its the brakes, or have them hold the bishing area of the fork real tight, if there no play or if they can feel movement thats where it is.

Another trick with any headset i use on my own is.......put a 1mm headset spacer on top of the stem then put the top cap on and tighten it down. This allows the a more accurate compression of the whole stack.
