Ok, so I was finishing up my P.O.S. S.S. last night, and whilst celebrating it's near-trail-worthiness with the Champagne of Beers, I had a little thought:
Has anyone tried putting a 29" front fork & wheel on a 26" frame? Kinda like those DH/FR guys with their 24" rears... but bigger...
It seems to me that it would be kinda cool... Anybody know where to get a rigid 29" fork?
No idea where to find a fork, but it is a really cool idea!!

I had this same conversation a while back with somebody and I think they said that they new somebody that had tried this.
Surly sells a 29" rigid fork.

While I havent tried 29s on a 26er frame, I'm currently building up a POS Schwin roadbike with 26s and beefy tires. I dont have the clearance to run beefy 700c tires but I can run a pair of 26x1.8s on it. :etard:
Maybe it will be a fun fixie to commute with
-or-
it might be the most getto ride anyone will have ever seen. I'm not sure.
I think the issue with 29s on a 26er frame would be clearance, maybe if you got a new front fork and ran 26s in the back you could skirt this problem. If it's a POS you might as well give it a shot (? why not, you could always sell the fork on ebay if it doesnt workout).
delicious or dubious... I'm curious to see the results.
I will have a Surly 29" rigid fork available. It's still on my bike but I plan on getting a WB suspension fork.

Whatcha want for it? I don't know how much they are new, so...
I'll do a little research. It's about 3 months old.
Maybe I shouldn't have spoke up so soon, as I wasn't in a hurry.
I was gonna wait for winter (find a sale on the White Brothers 29 1.0).
Is this something you want soon?

Nah, if anything, this is gonna be a (long, slow) winter project... Just keep me in mind if you do wanna get rid of it...
Anyone else have any crazy ideas?

go here (http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61). anything you'd need to know about 29's. the moderator named "cloxxki" does this **** all the time.

i don't see any advantage but....

I would think about this move. You can throw your steering off pretty dramatically by changing the geometry that much. I tried a Duke 4" on my Zeh Ti hardtail and had to go back to the SID Race (2.5) to get quick handling back. It will steer like a river barge, I believe. Try it without cutting off the steerer tube first.

Yeah, you'll slacken out the head angle and it'll handle all funky. The reason for the 24" rear wheels on DH/FR bikes is for durability, and you don't mind a 65-67* head angle when pointed downhill

Hmmm... I'm gonna hafta say 'f-it' to the whole idea - the bike handles sweet just the way it is...:D
I actually took the day off work Friday and spent 4hrs in the parking lot of my building trying to teach myself some trials skills... The bike now has a 5" riser bar on a 16" rigid Al frame running a 32x18 - and it weighs about 20lbs... Holy Crap is that fun! I improved my track stand exponentially over the course of the day, and even figured out how to "walk" the bike sideways (I don't know what it's really called) by hopping one wheel at a time - of course, my best was only like rear, front, rear - but I didn't dab! Practice, practice!

5" riser - that is damn near a BMX bar! Post a pic!!
...I just put 2 and 2 together... bring the new (old) ride to Wirth if you come out for another Sunday trailwork session!

I'll try and make it... but one of my good buddy's bachelor party is Saturday nite (so I can't make the party either:cryin: ), and I may not be able to ride a bike at all on Sunday...
Yeah, I gotta get a pic of it...
Yeah... probably not a good idea to be out swingin' heavy, sharp trail tools when you're still drunk from the night before!!!

It's not like I've never gotten drunk and decided to swing my tool around before... ;)
