If you know what you want and can do the work yourself, then buy online. But don't buy online and bring the mess to your local bike shop and expect prompt service. As for what others are going to say or think, who cares your out riding. If it that much of a problem, take the stickers off and have a frame that is stealth. I'll ride with ya no matter what your riding, just as long as I don't have to pull ya.:)

The only parts on my bike that are from the LBS are replacement rings, freehub body, and water bottle cages. I usually buy service parts at the LBS, but that is about it. I would like to support my LBS, but when the price difference is such that I feel I am being robbed blind, mailorder wins. I'm just looking out for my checking account.

I buy almost all my stuff online. Part of the reason being I don't live or work near a bike shop, so its inconvienient to drive to one, and second my wallet is very thin. I did buy my bike from one though since I wanted to be able to test ride a few.
I think you worry too much about what others think - as evidenced by you posting anonymously. Life's too short - just enjoy the ride and all will be good!

Its not a big deal at all, a frame is just a frame. I mean c'mon i ride a Raleigh frame that i love and people give me gripe all the time! It just takes some people longer than other to realize that, and some never figure it out.....now components on the other hand.............................

Don't worry about buying stuff mail order. I am in collge and buy a lot of stuff that way as well as at my local shop. It just depends on how fast I need it. If I am willing to wait I will buy mail order. For example, this summer I replaced my cassett, chain and cables and was able to save damn near $100 by buying on-line. One nice thing about this modern age is that most shops post their prices on their website for all their gear so you can shop around and find the best deals without having to leave your house. On a karma note though I do in the long run prefer to buy local becuase the shops are where I go when I get stumped and they also support your local area (or at least should). This is espicially important in smaller towns like Winona or Rochester where there is not as large of a customer base to support the shop and where a local bike shop has the ability to play a larger role in policy planning.

My old frame was a Raleigh M600. Still really like the frame.

Just don't forget that bike shops like the one that holds the Thursday night races, support cycling. Also, they have to pay for more employee's, taxes, insurance, etc than the internet/mail order companies so they can service you when you need something ASAP. Local bike shops are trying to stay alive in a mailorder/internet world. I can assure you that owning a bike shop is not a gold mine. Many dealers are in it for the pasion of the sport. Plus, how about the support they give MORC and other local organizations. Can you shop cheaper? Sure, but as always you may find out you'll be better served by spending a bit more and having a good relationship with your local shop.

I was shopping mail-order before I bought my On-One. I also could have bought my On-One through mail-order, but would rather support a LBS. So, I ordered it through One On One Bicycle Studio even though it was not in stock. I got it in 3 days and built it up myself. I had a couple of minor issues with building it and they helped me solve those issues......at no charge to me.
You can buy mail-order and it's your choice to do so. Just be sure to not expect a LBS to bail you out if you have issues, which you almost always do when building bikes. I want there to be cool shops like One On One around, so I choose to support them. By supporting them I get to have a place I know and trust and that's what counts to me. I guess our society has just gotten stuck on this idea that you need to get everything as cheap as possible........well.....we can clearly see where that's taking us........or at least I can clearly see it.

Now that we know it's a "Singlepivot", will you still be anonymous at the trailhead?
