I am happy to announce that the long planned re-route work on the east side of the River Bottoms trail has been approved by the city of Bloomington, as have plans for the necessary bridges.

To start things off we are going to plan a trail clearing work session this Sunday, September 19 at Noon - meet at Mound Springs Park - proceed east on 102nd Street from Portland 'till it ends at a gate. Park there and walkdown the road to the worksite (gate may be open - if so you can drive down the hill and then park)
This will be a chainsaw, downfall clearing work session to prepare for the Trail Source dirt moving crew/machines. If you have suitable equipment please bring it (Chainsaws, handsaws, loppers for big stuff, strong backs).

If possible please get back to myself and Don Youngdahl (Sunday work crew leader) dmy@visi.com (dmy@visi.com) 651 633 2029 home, 651 276 8622 mobile with your availability or if a slightly different time would be better for you. If you post a reply note here we both will get it as well.

According to work crew leader Don Youngdahl: "We got almost all the work done for the two segments that are east of the picnic table at Parkers Picnic Area. There's one big tree to cut, and about 100 yards of the west segment to clear with loppers, with one tangle of brush & big vines to clear".

Thanks to the work crew for a solid 3.5 hour effort.

Looking for volunteers to help out and clear the remaining small area yet this week.

I will be at the Parkers Picnic Ground Lot tonight - Tuesday 21 September by 5:45PM with one chainsaw, loppers, trimmers, and a couple of handsaws to finish the clearing. I hope you can join me.

If you can get there much earlier let me know and/or go ahead and start working on the area east of Parkers Picnic ground as described below.

Directions - proceed south on Portland Ave past Old Shakopee Road, you will have to turn right onto 104th street, then take and immediate left onto 5th Ave Circle, then left onto Columbus Road, the parking lot is on your right, that is where I will be, go thru the gate on the east of the lot to the trail area. We will be working to the east of this spot - and will be working unless there is a lot of rain. I'll have my phone.

I will be off E-mail this morning from 8AM until about 1:30PM.

Stage 1 clearing work is now complete on the two re-route sections - Trail Source is expected to start the dirt work next week - more updates as they become available.

Feel free to check them out and offer your comments.

Work on the first bridge and some boardwalk will start soon, as soon as I get final approval on a bridge anchor modification, and get a couple of "driver" pieces made for driving pipe. If anyone has a metal lathe that can turn a 2 inch diameter piece, contact me if you want to help out with about an hour fabrication job.

I'll need at least two helpers for the abutment installation, as I'm still not working with tools.
