I had a friend tell me once that there is some public access somewhere in the trees between DL and Frazee. Is anyone familiar with what this might be along Hwy 34? Also, has there ever been any talk of opening up the old ski hill just outside of town for biking? If anyone has any other tips on local west central/northwest rides, that would be great. I haven't explored too much around here, but living in the RR Valley, we pretty much have to get out a bit to find some terrain. Thanks.

Hello Michael,

Welcome to the forums! I don't know a whole lot about the area but here are a few options for you.

Head north from DL, up to Callaway and check out Maplelag resort. It's a XC ski resort run by Jay Richards and family. They have a trailsystem for Mtb'ng and they host the Laddies Loppet mt bike race every year. It just happened about two weeks ago.

Also, the guy that runs this: http://www.jlgarchitects.com/ND-NAG/index.htm (Randy Lieberg) I believe, is based out of Fargo somewhere. Touch base with him either through the website or through the message boards on mtbr.com. He goes by Dijridoo.

Good luck on your singletrack quest and happy ridin'.

I rode at that ski hill a couple of years back. There was a sparsely used network of ski/game trails that you could patch together using service roads. . Definitely has potential, and I for one would love to help get some more developed trails in that area. Who owns the land?

Great question about ownership -- not really sure. I should ask my buddy from the area. He might know.

Thanks for the lead on the guy from Fargo, Troy. I will have to look him up sometime and see if he has any other suggestions for the area. I haven't been to Maplelag before, although I have heard a few different things about it. I might try make it up there yet this fall. Hopefully we get some decent fall weather!

I believe the land is owned by Steve Schmidt. He came to a MORC board meeting about 1 year ago and presented his ideas for the area. I know mt. biking was one of his goals. I believe the area he was talking about buying was or is called Detroit Mountain. I am not sure if the deal was completed or not. The last contact info I have for him is cell # 612-348-2972. If he actually moved up there his number may have changed. That is all I have about the ownership of this area.
