On another forum, I saw the rather startling news that Kryptonite u-locks with cylindrical keys can be picked with the case of ball-point pen (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=66128&page=1&pp=25). Which, um, sure sucks if it's true...

Pretty good read. It almost sounds like it is a hoax? Even video proof I see. I do know that I thought it was funny that I can open my friend's New York chain with my New York chain key. I wonder how many keys they actually make. Could have been just luck that we got the same exact key.

Who needs to unlock it? I walked right up to a bike rack in the middle of the day with my friend carrying a 4 foot bolt cutters and we cut a krypto in half in full view of a bunch of people and walked away with the bike. No one said a thing or even looked at us cross. Sure, the bike was his and we cut the lock because the key mechanism had siezed (really REALLY siezed, we tried lubricating it first), but still- we could have done this to any bike. Whole process: 20 seconds. Walked away with a bike, bolt cutters, and really chewed up krypto.

You realize that if we don't turn you in, we'll also be criminals.

Ok...so I got really curious and tried this technique on my wife's Krypto Evolution 2000. I got the lock to turn half way!
So I guess it's not a hoax...

If you try this and get the lock stuck half-way just file off the "nub" on the key and you can stick it in when the lock is in any position. Took me a minute to fix it.

Got home, decided to try this out. I didn't have one of the Bic's but I did try it with a Papermate FlexGrip that I had lying around. The first time it took me a little bit to get the technique down, but after a figuring it out the thing popped right open like I had the key. Got the end bar all the way off.... put it back on (I had a hard time relocking it with the pen so I used my key) and did it again, came MUCH easier this time. It definately works.
So now the question is ..... what kind of bike do I want :crazy2: (kidding).

It's a good thing I never lock my bike!

Look for this story on Fox 9. I think they might run something in the near future.
Nice of them to run the story once the Star Trib broke the news in the area.
Works great on Kensington laptop locks too! :)
Just made the video, it works better if you rock the pen to make the end a little large first. Standard BIC pen, no funny business.

...at Erik's in SLP. F'ing scary. When I lived in DT Chicago I rode my pimped out Jamis Dragon HT everywhere and locked it up with a Krypto + secondary chain. Can't believe this just reared its head now. Seems almost elementary that you could use a thin-walled, malleable plastic cylinder...i.e. pen...to pick a cylindrical lock.
Glad I don't lock my bikes up anywhere now. Apparently they've picked every variety of Krypto including the NYC lock.

At first, I was thinking this was BS. I went to my local bike shop. 5 different people and probably 10 different U-locks. We were able to get every one of them open. Granted, it wasn't in a matter of seconds, but once you got the technique down (in about 5 minutes) it was pretty darn simple. For me, it took the first 4 minutes to figure out that you have to turn the pen Clockwise to unlock! Duh.
I'm glad that I don't leave anything locked up anywhere (with the exception of a junker.) If I do lock something up, I'm sticking with the easy to carry cable and regular key type lock. Better to discourage casual theft than nothing.
Check the Star Trib. They have a story on it in Friday's Metro section.
What I want to know who thought to try this to begin with?
