How much lighting do I need in order to do a decent night ride?

I'm considering getting a 10-12w halogen head light, and a 10w halogen helmet light. Will that be enough? Those HID lights look cool, but are way too expensive for my budget.

If you meant to say a 10 watt handlebar and 10 watt helmet light you will have plenty of light. I would recommend getting a handlebar light that gives you more flood lighting and then getting a more spot oriented helmet light.

You really could just get away with one ten watt (I'd recommend helmet light first) but two ten watts will make it even more enjoyable.

I just purchased a light set from Don. It has a 10 watt head lamp and a 10/20/30 double light handle bar set. Both Halogen. Only issue is that the headlamp only has 2 hours of life, Don said it actually lasts a bit less so I may need to investigate getting an auxilliary battery pack or something. If I can get by with just the head lamp that would be great. The battery for the other light is a bit on the heavy side.

Thanks, guys.

I guess I'll go ahead with a helmet and a handlebar light. There are a lot of 10 watt models to choose from. 2 hours of light should be all I need for now.

I'm also considering a homebrew light, depending on how many parts I can scrounge up.
