Is there anyone out there who is interested in doing something other than riding around in circles? Anybody interested in either MTB Orienteering or Geocaching by bike? (Oh yeah, don't send any posts about where it is allowed or not allowed. I'm a park ranger, remember? I know that stuff. I just want to see if we can get people out of their ruts--figuratively and literally--and try something new.)
Backcountry Patrol is thinking of holding an MTB-O workshop, and or a Geocaching event before Chequamegon. (Good practice for the Rough Stuff Rendezvous!) if there is interest in doing so.
Ride safe,

Han's anymore interest on this topic? I'd like to check it out if I can fit it into my hecktic life. Sounds like a good time, and as you stated something different than riding in circles.

Is it like orienteering?
Is that what this would be, but on a bike?
If so, I am interested and know it would be a lot of fun.

Geocaching on the other hand........:

Geocaching in looking for hidden objects with a GPS and a good set of peepers. (Eyes!) and swapping something in that cache for something minor that you have.
Orienteering is using a map, compass and bike to navigate an orientering course. Unfortunately, the Chequamegon Rough Stuff Rendezvous has been the only one in the region for years. We tried to get something going for a few years but never had much interest. I am a MNOC member, but I do mostly Geocaching on my bike, because you don't need to have an organized event or course. the boxes are out there. You just have to find them. I do both on skis.
I'm thinking of putting something "bike-y" in a dozen or so caches for Labor Day Saturday or Sunday. If I have about 6-10 people express an interest, I will do it.
So far we have about 3.:cryin:

If you guys are interested I will set this up. I can get maps and set up a course in the metro or wherever. I've done quite a bit of adventure racing and orrienteering this year. Actually I've done about eight races so far this year ranging from 4-hours to 36-hours:crazy2: and I have set up training courses for my team. I love setting up courses! If anyone is interested send me an email to
ugroundadventure@yahoo.com
If we can get enough people I will do it.

Just for giggles, you may want to post here (http://www.mngca.org). I've only run across a couple of cachers here locally who Mountain bike.
Sadly, I won't be able to play, at least not untill my wife is recovered from her surgery, prolly late September. Might be fun to set up an event later this fall however....when the leaves are down and the GPS signals are better in the woods.
I'd be another one who'd be interested in this. Unfortunately I'm quite busy over the next month and a half or so (weddings and helping parents build a cabin). The biking time has fallen victim to lots of other priorities also. If something gets thrown together and I can make it- cool.
