Trail was in great shape last night for the group ride after the film fest. There were up to 20 or so of us on the ride at one point. This was the first time I'd been on the new trails at Theo. I was very impressed, you guys have done a great job.
Drove up there last night to ride THeo and for the life of me could not find the trailhead or any mt bikers. Someone needs to post better directions, and I need to get better at finding my way around the twin cities.

I think you need to read the directions a little better, But from the kiosk at 55 and Wirth PKWY (NW corner), there is a singletrack trail going into the woods about 20 feet up the paved bike trail.

Looks like Theo is getting rained on quite a bit right now. Tonights ride might be off. Anyone who can, please post up a trail status as soon as they can.
Thanks.

It's been on and off all day just west of Wirth.

It looked like the whole city got rained on quite a bit according to my maps here at work.

I made the decision not to ride Theo tonight due to the rain I was in off and on all day. I hate missing the Monday Theo ride, it makes the rest of my week so much better being in Mpls riding a great trail with an exceptional group of people. I am dreading winter this year, withdrawl of riding buddies, Monday rides at Theo, and the great joy it brings to me. Thanks to the planners, designers, builders and riders that make this a great trail.

That is not very politically correct of you. Why would you not want a $50k plus rebodied chevy that gets piss poor milage at $3.00 a gallon.
We should all get one to sit up an inch higher than the auto next to you as to make lane changes with out the need to check that pain in the ass rear view.

Maybe....:)
But, I sure wouldn't mind freeriding some H2's with my BigHit. Like to a drop onto the roof or something......sweeeeet!! Would get to watch all the cheap sheetmetal fold and crumble......:)
Ask Chris D about us sitting in those at this years auto show. What a huge pile of junk they are. To buy one, you must not even look at it or sit it in first, you just go, I want one and buy it. Then the first drive is like, wow....this sucks. Then they go and file a complaint. H2 is has the highest number of customer complaints than any other vehicle.

That is my rear view mirror mount. I took the mirror off, because I can't see out the back of my H2 anyway. ;)

Wirth is great. Rode a cross bike in there from 5:30-7 PM.
Caution:, In the south loop, at the first inslope turn on the decent to the kiosk, the city has cut down a marked tree. Must have been right at the end of the day because they just left it there, at neck height!!! We pushed it down a bit, to about 3/4 wheel height, but it is too big to move. Hopefully no night riders experience any carnage.
Pete or somebody else might want to talk to the city and explain to them the ramifications of their actions. Obviously we have to ride cautiously at all times, but this was pretty skechy regardless.

If it's under 6 inches in dia. then we can cut it tomarrow at trail work.
It's more oblong, 8" x 10" maybe, it pinned the inside of the turn, right in mid-turn. I believe it is a Elm tree, with a red-orange blaze on the trunk. I just found it rather amusing that anybody would take the time to cut it down properly, and then just leave it laying across the trail, suspended by brush at neck level, and not take the additional 5 minutes to cut the main trunk into a couple of sections and at least get it down on the ground, where it is less of a accident waiting to happen.
We're getting a really good soaking right now, so please wait until later on Thursday to check out the trail. Longer if the rain keeps up. And watch out for down branches/trees - we had some pretty strong winds tonight.
And remember...
Trails are considered closed in wet weather and when the trail tread is soft or wet.
The trails are open if the tread is solid and most all the soft/muddy spots have dried up.
I walked the trail from 3-4:30 today. Removed a few small trees and branches from the trail.
There is a large tree down in the Enchanted Forest section (south loop) - shortly after the new downhill reroute. The trail is completely blocked.
Otherwise the trail is in great shape. A few wet/soft spots, but overall tacky.
Remember, ride through the soft spots... not around them.
Thanks,

I rode Theo over lunch, the trail is in awesome shape except for the downed tree. When you said the trail is competely blocked, you weren't kidding! There's so much foliage you can't even see the trail. I had to do a little hiking without the bike just to figure out where the trail eventually started up again.
Had a deer run across the trail right in front of me. Gotta love urban singletrack!
As of 3:30 Friday the tree was still there. MPRB has been notified.
Walked the south loop at about 12 noon today (Sat. 9/24).
The tread was softer than I expected. I'd stay off it for today.
It typically takes 6-8 hours to harden up after a rain. Please be patient.
The downed tree is still blocking the trail in The Enchanted Forest.

My brother and I removed the tree this afternoon.
I walked the trail this morning (11am Sunday 9/25).
The trail is wet and soft. Muddy in a lot of spots.
We've received a fair amount of rain over the last 5 days... so it'll take longer than usual to dry out. If the forecast is correct we'll be getting more rain later today, but I'd guess the trail might be worth checking later on Monday afternoon.
Please be patient.

I think if the trail has a good number of wet areas, where people will ride around the mud and widen the trail, we should probably call the ride. We will hopefully get a report from Bill soon.
If we can ride, it will be a lot of fun. Probably half in the light, the other half in the dark......:)
Mara are you and Shad doing the "A" or "B" ride? I'm an "A" ride kind of guy, but would stoop to the "B" ride for you guys fine company.

The official Kenwood ride is 5 for the rest of the riding season, and there is a night ride at 6. I called PC with the update, but here it is. "Okey Dokey". You will find wet spots, of course, on the Skyline and the low spots, but all in all it is pretty good. Have fun and see you next week.

The trails were OK. However, the entrance to the "main trail" loop (by the golf course) is getting really really really really bad when it is wet. Amazingly White Pine Flyer was in good enough shape to ride.

Service road......it needs a lot of help!
There were a few wet spots, but I am very impressed with how well the trail is holding up. We had a lot of rain in the last few days and the trail was rideable within 24 hours of all the rain.
The new armor section was in really good shape, can't wait to put in the jump......:)

We did not finish the armoring we started last night. Please be careful when on the return trail, not far after the qualifier, to HWY 55 where the berms are. There is a temporary reroute to the right of the rocks. We put logs and such on the rocks so they don't look rideable. Just slow down and go to the right of the rocks. We will be working on this Sunday starting at 10:30 am. Anyone who wants to come help out, please do. We need to get this done as fast as we can......thanks.
Trail was great today. The 'potholes' on Skyline were muddy, but that's it.
Rain in the forecast though. :cryin:
Forecast is for around 4 inches of rain before it's all over.
Please stay off until at least Thursday - maybe longer with the cooler temps.
Trail conditions will be updated after trailwork tomorrow.

I suggest giving the trail at least 12 hours to dry out....if not longer. With no sun and cooler weather, it's not going to dry out as fast as it normally does.
The parts of the trail I saw today were still pretty wet and soft.
If you live nearby, it may be worth checking out later on Thursday afternoon.

Are there a handful of obvious locations which would be indicators of wet vs. dry for the majority of the trails?
manual63
10-06-2005, 11:20 AM
Please keep in mind, there may be a lot of dry spots, but there are also low wet spots too. So just because one section might be dry, it does not mean the trails are fully dry and ready to ride.

The southbound trail on the short loop (Skyline) is going to stay wet the longest, as far as the rest of the trail goes - there's wet stuff on most of the sections, so you'll know.
The "Hill" seems to stay dry though :)

5pm...I just walked around over there. Nice day for a walk in the woods, probably worth staying off of the trails for another day with the bikes though....enough places with obvious standing water that the pagan God of Trails will be happier. I'm concluding there is a 80:20 rule here. 80% is nearly bone dry while 20% isn't ready for the knobbies..
I will wait til tomorrow pm...thanks for the feedback.
Good call Will.
I'd agree 100%. It seemed borderline from what I saw.
Waiting 'til later on Friday would be my recommendation.

I hope my posts don't come off too bossy.
My goal is for it to become common knowledge that it's bad to ride on wet/soft trails.
Ideally, Wirth trail users will have (and use) good judgement... versus trying to get the MPRB to play a larger enforcement role.

I road both sections tonight about 5:30. BIG puddles on the road on the way in past the Par 3, very soft at the entrance to the trail. There were over a dozen puddle size areas where it was pretty soft, but you were able to ride around it. These are the conditions where it would be a good time to mark those areas so they can be worked on. Maybe we could try that next year.
As far as the section closer to Hwy. 55, Skyline had several actual water/mud puddles. I realize this is mostly legacy trail, but it should receive some attention and try tyo get a bench cut in there.
See you at trail work Sunday.
I only saw the south loop today, but it was in great shape!
...once the Skyline potholes got filled with gravel.
Thanks guys.
Theo is most likely too wet to ride this morning (from the rain that came through last night).
With the cooler temps and the amount of leaves on the trail, it is drying out much slower than this summer. If it warms up and gets sunny, it may be worth checking later in the afternoon.
Please use good judgement when checking on the trail:
Trails are closed in wet weather and when the trail tread is soft or wet.
Trails are open if the tread is solid and most all the soft/muddy spots are dry.

was in pretty good shape. Great job on the southern loop to fill in those spots holding water! I like the new entrance to the southern loop too! I actually went right by it to the old trail and saw it was blocked then saw the sign. Much better for people looking for the trail for the first time. There was some muddy areas on the north loop, but overall it was all good.

I rode 6 laps last night and it was perfect. All kinds of newbies looking for direction and raving about the trail. We got wet over here last night and with the coolness and grey day I don't think it should be ridden. Trail work at 10: 30 for those interested in moving some pines out of the way of the ski trail. Get a road ride in over to the Birchwood for one of Tracy's killer scones.

If you are going west on 55 from 94 you need to take a left on Theodore Wirth Parkway. Go south till you hit the stop sign. Take a left and the parking area is on the left side of the road. You then get on your bike and ride back the way you just came. Get to the intersection of 55 and Theo, trail head is at the northwest corner of the intersection.

We'll be out blowing/raking leaves sometime in the next 2 weeks or so... the leaves are staying on the trees pretty late this year.

Rode the trail today at 4:15pm from straight outta downtown in street clothes, sneakers, and a messenger bag on the cross-check. Great evening for a ride. Trail is in good shape, lots of leaves. The tread has that perfect tacky moisture level that makes it really hook up, but the leaves on top of that make it tricky, so watch it.
The two tables (north and south) are cool, nice work guys, but both need to be bigger, I cleared both in the drops with the above mentioned setup......if I was on the MTB they would have just been speed bumps.
I haven't noticed it mentioned yet, so.......If you live in NE or a similar area, and ride to/from Wirth via Plymouth Ave, find a new way. The bridge as Plymouth comes over the RR tracks and the Creek into the Parkway is in the process of being torn down. The construction company has a temporary gangway across the creek and stairs up the bank, but I assume it would be trespassing to use this, so use your best judgement.

Conditions were great yesterday. I got there about 4:15 and did 2 laps. I more people out during this nice weather. Not too many people out Saturday either. I saw a guy with no shirt and a shaven head having fun. He passed me and was off like a rocket, jumping everything he came across. Oh, did I mention that he was on a bike? ;)
Trail was in GREAT shape this afternoon... dry as a bone in some areas, tacky in others, and all the leaves were dry... awesome!

'Layered' dry leaves are sketchier than wet as far as I'm concerned. There is no saving it or hooking up when you start sliding. I don't think it matters what tire pressure you're running either. Makes it interesting.

Very tack at dusk today. Leaves weren't bad. Trail rides pretty well right now. bummer about the rain.
Yeah, the trail has been really nice lately. Looks like next week may be another good one... (according to the weather people).
Unfortunately, the rain today will make the tread too soft to ride for a little while. And with leaves on the trail and cooler temps, it'll take more time to dry out.
Please use good judgement when checking on the trail:
Trails are closed in wet weather and when the trail tread is soft or wet.
Trails are open if the tread is solid and most all the soft/muddy spots are dry.
Please be patient if the trail isn't ready.

They were very good. Some of the leaves are wet, so watch the corners with leaves. Besides that, the trail is solid.

I rode TW for the first time ever last night... night ride with Bob, Shad, Steve and a few others who joined us on the trail.
I've worked on it a few times but never gotten the chance to ride. Conditions were great and the trail was really fun to ride - everyone did a SUPER job on this trail. I hope there can be many more miles added.
I liked how the flow of the trail was not like any others... at times it felt like part of the Leb expert loop (the area just before the XX entrance where it winds around) but yet different. I especially liked the dips in the trail where you could get some air.. and the rock areas were very cool. I missed the skinny the first time but hit it the second - that was cool too.
I did eventually have an encounter with my shoulder and a tree (the tree won) but that was to be expected carrying that kind of speed on an unknown trail winding between the trees keeping up with Shad.
So... this was a bit more than a trail condition, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone that has put in time over there on the trails. I hope to join the night ride again sometime. (hopefully more people will show up next time...)
It feels good to get away from my home trail of Leb and experience some of the exciting areas we have going on around the metro...

Anyone else read the story about the trail closing In a county park near Newark. It sounds like what happened there or was happening there was the same stuff that went on at wirth before mountain bikes came into the park legally. Meaning all the wierd stuff like satan ritutals, naked weirdos, teenage parties, bodies.....
Maybe we could help them by explaining what happened here when the MTB's came to town.

The trail was in great shape. The leaves were still a little damp underneath in some spots, dry in others. Keeps you on your toes. Saw a lot of skidding, probably some noob. Lots, and I mean LOTS of deer in, where else, Whitetail. They were laying right beside the trail, and got up quickly and moved to the side about 30 feet. There had to be ten of them. Careful on the night rides. You're just a small car to them.

The city tree crew doesn't really have much respect for the trail when they haul trees out. I cleared a bunch more rubbish last night. It isn't a big deal, as long as they don't leave head knockers and eye gougers. (edit) I was just thinking, the deer were probably displaced by the logging. The NW section (that we didn't put trail in) is being logged, and that is probably where the deer were hanging out.

This year, more than most, I've been feeling very not-from-around-here. For whatever reason, it's been harder and harder to talk myself into riding since the temperature started dipping below 40 degrees. Standing at the bus stop this morning after slip-sliding my way down the sidewalk, head bowed away from the wind, biking was probably the furthest thing from my mind.
Kudos to all with thicker skin and warmer core temperatures. Descended from reptilian stock ye must be. Hopefully, I can overcome this bout of weather-wussiness and get back in the saddle.

I am heading out at 10 today to lay some fresh tracks at Wirth. I love the first snowfall rides. :)
First out!!!! :crazy2:  Did the A loop twice as the snow was coming down pretty good. Then went over and did the B loop. The trickiest part of the whole trail is Dingo. Those quick little off camber dives make you put your foot down. Rode everything but the rock pile. Went about 3/4 the way up and lost traction. Stayed on the bike and kicked over the top. Finishing up I caught 6 more people, including a dad with one of those trail bikes hooked to the back of his bike, hauling a 7 year old around, and another kid riding his own bike. Studs weren't necessary yet, but another 20-30 riders and they might be. It might be time to break out the XC skis if we get another dump on Monday.

We had a good time. Tag along boy got a little cold later as he was just sitting.
Nice ride today, sure pretty out there. Snow was creaky. Agreed, studs may be helpful later as pack out begins. We had home made studs on just the rear, cause I only have two. We were going slow enough that the front didn't slid out. The extra grip was noticed a bit on the climbs. Later.

Bumped into Stoneage and we did a couple of laps - he was on slicks (worn knobbies) and I was on studs. First lap no real problems for either of us, a slip here or there, a front-wheel washout crash for me.
We chatted for a few minutes between laps. Second lap was a different story. The sky went gray and things slicked up and became more interesting. Still rideable without studs, but fewer surprises with them.

I ran a couple laps at theo today as well, around 11am. I wasn't using studs, but either way, 40psi is rediculously high. I was running my rear tire right around 20+ and the front in the teens and it hooked up really well for a snow ride.
What size are your studed tires? The bigger they are the lower you can run 'em. I think last time I rode with Bob and Ted they were running real low pressures too. Try something below 30 and go from there, you want the contact patch nice and wide and long to get a max foot print and as many studs as possible in contact with the ground.

Not much use for studs today at Harmon. No ice. The snow was just starting to pack enough to really grab. Really easy to lose the bite.
About 20-25psi seemed to be good for those conditions. My last couple of Wirth rides 25-30 seemed to handle well. The studs helped a bit there as it was really well packed, but still no ice. With the warm weather today I assume Wirth's pack started getting torn up and looser, and I'd want to drop down a bit.
If you want to really try out your Klondikes, go find a local skating rink and chase some kids around. You'll get your money's worth out of them in a few maliscious minutes.

Rode the S loop twice, also.

missed most of this thread cuz it's trail conditions not studded tires but...
if you're running the cheepy innovas, try 15-20psi. the sidewall is stiff enough to hold you up. i've ran mine down in the 10 psi range w/o any troubles.

If you are one of the first "riders" go out with a back country attitude and you will love it.

That white stuff you see everywhere is called snow. It is pretty fun and handy stuff if you know what kind of vehicle to put in it. XC skis come to mind, actually. ;)

Trail research, huh? Did you fly a bike down? I am heading to Troncones in late March and there are trails there too. I am wondering if there are any hassles getting the bike into Mexico. Did I see somewhere that JitterJepp rents out his bike box?

I didn't have any problem, I was on America West - I had 3 check items, so they charged me $80 for the bike box - then they weighed it, 75#'s - so they wanted to charge me more, then they asked what was in the box - so I told them, and they wanted to charge me more ($240 total).
I made them read the fine print, and it said they could only charge for the bike - no weight charge, and that covered the 3rd bag - so $80 as the customer service rep told me when I booked. Make them read the fine print.
If you're flying on United, use your IMBA card for a discount (free?) - use a pro bike box if you can, the thin ones from bikeshops will only make it one way most times, so you'll have to hunt down another.
Sorry everyone, didn't mean to hijack - guess I should start a new thread titled "Baja trail conditions" :) Wouldn't hurt - I can give some tips on how I set up my bike for the thorns.
Heath, I cleared my box - Mara is your "in charge" contact if you have MOCA biz - you can post here and I'm sure she'll respond.

Shawn, next time use your IMBA card and Adventure Travel. Your bike will fly for free. It is even printed on the ticket and they do use America West. I did this and the ticket price was the same as anywhere else. I didn't have any trouble at all. Also I do rent the box. Its a hard case. $25 for two weeks and I'm not much of a stickler on the two week time limit. The $25 goes to MORC/MOCA. You write the check to one or the other and I mail it off.

Holy krieke! I did a N.loop lap on snowshoes @ lunch today.
I expected powder/packer powder at best. I was set to help pack it flat for post melt freeze ride. !! Theo north loop has a well beaten path through the whole north loop !! It's fricken freeway.
There are no bike tire tracks on trail. Perhaps we wait til after a melt freeze and don't ride it wet.
Obviously the trail crosses cc trails. So like Leb they are off limits, bikes should yeild to cc'ers & only cross cc trail at 90 degree (need signage?)
I'd say it's ride-able soon or now. Mara/moca? I couldn't push my fist through base. Yes, a 1 inch crust is forming nicely on top of 2 inch pack.

You've got it. The city has not mentioned signage, but it might not be a bad idea for us to bring up proactively. If Jennifer from the MPRB attends the MOCA meeting tomorrow, I'll get her opinion.
We may ask bikers to voluntarily take a few days off before the City of Lakes Loppet in early February as a courtesy to the skiers, but other than that, ride early, often, and politely whenever conditons permit.

I decided to try out my new lighting system and see how rideable Theo is.
After driving home from work from in rush hour (Eden Prairie to Minneapolis), getting all of my layers on, mounting the lighting system, strapping on the bike rack, realizing I forgot my cellphone at work, driving back to Eden Prairie at the tail end of rush hour, and then driving to Theo, I finally made it to the head of the north loop.
That was a huge waste of time.
The trail looks packed, but the surface crust disintegrates into slippery powder whenever you need any traction. I was using a WTB Timberwolf 2.7/2.5 combo, a 32/20 gear ration, and even dropped the tire pressure down to about 15lbs or a bit less. Even then, very very difficult. No fun.
I rode in about 200 feet (to the tree with the inner tube tied to it) and in that short distance needed to dab a lot, left the trail several times, and went down once. I turned around and rode back to the head, and thought I noticed I had just a bit more control when I rode in my previous tracks - so, I tried the first 200 ft again...and a third time.
No better. Another crash. Just slippery powder from crust.
If by relating this tale I can save just one person from experiencing what I endured this evening, then my suffering need not be in vain.
At least I know my lighting system works.
I hauled my ass out of there, packed up the gear, and drove home. Upon arriving, I tore the Inbred off the rack, pumped up the tires and headed out for some alley and parking lot fun.
The snowbanks are starting to harden up enough to get on top of...just remember to not try the same line more than once or twice. You will punch through the crust. You will be eaten. You will fall embarassingly in slow motion onto your wrist. You will feel shame.

I think the ground should be fine, but it would be nice to get the snowshoers out when the snow turns tacky. That would stiffen it up quite a bit. The dirt should stay frozen under the pack till spring, unless we get a massive thaw. Riding when the snow is sticky only causes ruts to form when it gets cold again. Remember the one big rut last year, that we thought was a motorcycle? Probably a Pugsley. Kinda ruined it for everybody else.

I think this looks good! A melt, some freezing rain, a freeze and then some snow followed by a few days with highs in the low 30's. The snow should harden into a crust, the temp's will be shorts weather, and I have a light schedule for the next several days! Woo-hooooo!
I would recommend riding in the morning to avoid being the Creator of All Mofo Ice Ruts like the rider that did just that last New Year's Eve! Man, that thing was tricky like a snake lying in the snow waiting to take you out!
Here is the NOAA forecast that I live and ride by:
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?CityName=Golden+Valley&state=MN&site=MPX
The trail is far too wet/melted/squishy to ride. The snow has melted into mud on south-facing slopes, and the rest of the trail won't be too far behind.
Please stay off -- even on the sections where the tread itself might escape damage, riding on snow like this will cause a repeat of "the rut" from last year.
Mother Nature sure seems to be getting her groove on with the Solstice celebrations. . . she should be over it and back to frosty goodness by the middle or end of next week.

Rode two laps last night. The first 1/4 of the trail is easy to ride, well packed. The middle 1/2 of the trail has a very narrow line to ride, get off the line for a second and the softer snow will stop you quick. The last 1/4 of the trail was well packed as well and suckered me into another lap.
Started with soft tire pressure and it went well, half way through I let out some more pressure in the rear as it felt like the rear was digging in too much. That was the ticket and the second lap was much easier. Also much easier if you can maitain some speed, look ahead and try to stay in the the hard packed line. Once in the rough it takes alot of energy to get back on track.
Used a camping style head light I got for christmas and it was adaquate.
Get out and ride as long as it stays frozen and there is no new snow. great workout.

Just got back from a ride at Theo and figured I'd finally join the forums so I could post this Public Service Announcement: Theo is in great shape! There was a fine dusting of snow but it wasn't too slippery. There's a few slick patches and some ruts here and there but I wasn't running studs and I really had no trouble. Where are the major ruts, you ask? Well, just work up some serious speed on a few of the downhills and you'll find them quite easily. Anyway, overall, I think it's about the best it's been this winter. I got two laps in on both the north and south loops and probably could've gone for a third but I wimped out 'cause my toes were getting pretty numb. I know, how weak. But, then again, as of about an hour ago, my tire tracks were the only ones in and the only ones out...

Hit Wirth again today and it was much more challenging than Thursday. It might've thawed just a bit this afternoon and by the time I was out it was refrozen and plenty slippery. It's still good though. I didn't use studs and survived, but I might be a little soft in the head. If you've got studs, I'd throw 'em on. I misjudged my timing and it got pretty dark before I made it out. I didn't have lights and eventually I could hardly see the trail, let alone the icy patches. I had to ride by telepathy and it didn't always work. Ah, good fun.

I managed two laps of the north and south loops yesterday afternoon. There's a nice layer of packed snow in some areas that's excellent for traction, but there's lots of places with a thin coating of snow over glare ice. Or just ice. Overall, it's the slipperiest I've seen it all winter. It's interesting to see the divets in the snow off the trail where people have gone down. I added a couple of my own and I'm still feeling the effects of one bail today. The iciest area is in the pine woods just before the little concrete bridge. If you're back there, BEWARE. It's still a fun ride, but you'll probably want studs, good brakes, a helmet, and luck. Lots of luck.

Hit the trail yesterday and it was pretty good. Some stretches are bare (frozen) dirt and elsewhere there's a good snowpack for traction. However, it's still a bit slippery in places and at one point I let my mind wander and found myself cross-checking a tree at speed. Using studs would help considerably and if I wasn't betting that winter is almost over I'd buy myself some.

Hi Jason, thanks for asking first. I would stay off of the trail with the warm temperatures yesterday and today. If the temp drops you can ride this weekend, shoot for the morning before the sun gets to the trail.
Jason,
Adding to what E said, this time of year (late Feb/March) is tricky. The sun is starting to get a little more power, and even though it may be below freezing, there may be enough solar radiation by the afternoon hours to start to thaw the ground, even with temps in the mid 20s.
I rode Wirth monday night and noticed that much of the first leg running west along the railroad tracks is melted down to bare dirt. This dark ground along with the un-shaded southern exposure will heat up alot sooner and get nasty before the rest of the trail does. I noticed one place in particular where a 4 foot crowned section has many tire tracks frozen into the dirt, obviously its been deviod of snow for a while and gets a lot of sun.
The other thing to watch out for is areas in the woods where there is snow pack. These areas won't thaw as soon, but if they do, and they get ridden on, they could refreeze into giant ice ruts that effectively wreck the tread for someone who then tries to ride later when it is frozen and safe to ride.
Your best bet is to ride in the morning hours, as Erik suggested, or get a light and ride at night. I'd also suggest studs, as the snowpacked areas are mighty icy now. If you live close enough, I'd say go check it out, if there are any thawed areas, or you find you are cutting thru the snow pack, just bail and road it back home. Hope you can get a ride in!

Temp was 20 degrees, skies were sunny. 95% packed snow and ice with some dry dirt (makes me look forward to spring!) and some MUD! The mud is in Conundrum and was beginning to get soft when I passed through. There are some nsty ruts there too. The trai is fast and studs are highly recommended.
I checked out the trail yesterday after work and most of the trail is hard pack snow with stretches of ice. However, the Conundrum is mostly free of snow/ice and muddy when it's above freezing. There are already a lot of ruts in that section. The Snake trail where it's exposed to the sun is also clear of snow and shows some rutting, although not as bad as the Conundrum. There are short sections throughout the trail that show mud and rutting and longer sections on the Pond Loop and Zip.
Please do not ride the trail unless the ground is frozen, the trail fairies thank you!

Yep, it's getting to be that time - if you ride on the trails when there soft they'll just be closed longer when it gets wet in the spring (the ruts fill with water - the trail takes longer to dry, and we can't work on it).
So use some restraint, and kindly educate your fellow riders - and above all, keep on eye on John Schmidt postings - he's the new sheriff 'round here (trail steward that is).

Good to feel some of that Minnesota clay dirt under my tires. :)

I can't help but repeat this; Theo is absolutely perfect.
Trail work starts Wednesday at 5, BTW, for anyone who wants to come out and buff it up.

Bill is right. Conditions are perfect. I rode two laps on Friday and two on Saturday. Outstanding traction. Railed corners. The ruts seem to be dissipating too. Many riders on Friday, not so many on Saturday.

Just got back from a few laps. Believe it or not, it's gettin' a bit dusty out there! Be cautious on a few corners. A few corners in 'White Pine Flyer' (The advanced section) were pretty hairy. Otherwise, great shape. A small bit of rain wouldn't hurt it though.

I got in 3 laps and saw around 30 riders including 5 women and one female trail runner tonight between 6:00 and 7:00! Conditions were perfect.
Not much rain fell and Theo should be fine tomorrow. Use your head if it rains more. Of course, don't ride if it is too wet.
