After looking at it again i can see the the only possibility is that the guy wasn't paying attention and suddenly realized he was going to hit the pole. Instead of turning around it he hit the front brake went over the bars.

My money says it's a fake.

I go with fake. The chain is too straight if in fact it's time of impact. Same with back pack. Plus his leg leg and arm are both missing. Hmmm.

I'm thinking that I'm actually going to guess real on this one. He could be twisting sideways with his back to us to try to avoid the pole and have his leg sticking out straight away from us.
What makes me think that it's real, however, is the shadow. It matchs up to the position that the bike is in. The length and direction of the shadow also match up with the length and direction of the shadow of the man standing in the left of the picture

Real.
He's not impacting, strictly. I don't think he's hardly even touching the pole, more just going over the handlebars, and it's all happening at a pretty moderate pace (hence the straight chain and normally-positioned backpack). Looks like he's about to dump the bike and run a few quick steps away. Biggest bruise was probably his pride :).

I'd go with real as well. The shadow seems to be correct....
Pretty funny tho!

I say fake. He is posing for the shot.
Note that he is balanced, and nothing appears to be "in motion". Look how his right hand is holding the handlebar down, and how he has his seat tucked under his left arm so that it doesn't fall.
Also, the bike is several feet away from the curb, and there is nothing around to catch his front wheel on.
Fake.

I vote fake as well. It really does look real enough, but I have issues with the missing arm and leg(especailly the leg). There's no shadow for the left leg. You'd be surprised at what an expert user of photoshop can do. It does go to reason though that why would someone where what the rider is on the trail? But then you also have to look and realize that is in Germany, and they're weird there.

I'm going with it being a fake. If the rider was truly in motion at the time the picture was shot, there should be some blurring. It's almost too "perfect" to be random.

This reminds me of that photo that began circulating after 9/11 of the guy on top of the WTC (who looked a bit like martini BTW, insert one of those silly smirky faces here) with the plane coming in for a strike in the back ground. Then you see the same photo of the guy but now he's in front of the bulls in Spain. Then in front of the Hindenburg. Hey, Hans. Stand right here while I take this really wide-angled pic of you and just happen to catch this guy biffing into a pole. Right.
So I say shame on me for wasting another 2-3 minutes of my life on this ridiculous subject...I'm going to leb as my punishment.

OK then how about this one? Is it real? I'll show the whole picture later but tell me what you think now? It was taken two weeks ago on Mt. Rainer.

It's real. But the photo needs to be rotated 90 degrees CCW to be in accord with gravity.

By the way it was taken at about 6am. The sun was just starting to rise and no, I am not wearing a helmet because in a situtation like that (if it is real) the helmet wont even matter. The helmet is also attached to a sling not the pack.

I'm assuming, as Ruston said, that the picture needs to be rotated 90 degrees. Otherwise, the shaddow doesn't make sense.
It looks like it was taken on a frozen lake, possibly demonstrating how to get out of a hole or make it across a patch of thin ice.
I anxiously await to learn how stupid of a guess this was.

I say it's a real photo with the guy posing. The photo looks to good to be edited. I zoomed in on it with Paint Shop Pro and looked closely at the shad.........ow. I think it's just a posed picture to be funny. I can't imagine how you would manage to do such a thing unless you just saw the pole and slammed on the brake without any control. The combination of backpack, tall framed bike with freeride looking fenders is kinda weird, but who knows what that's all about? Maybe we should send it to snopes?

What? In mountaineering boots and ice axes? I'm not going ice fishing with you if I have to drag all that junk along. :)

Looking at the way the shadow from the ice climber falls really illustrates the phrase "Blowing sunshine up yer a$$!"

Well here is the real photo. I was laying in the crater on MT. Rainier. Everything I said was true. I said is was about 6am and it was. (we started climbing at 1am) I also said the helmet didn't even matter if you fell from that point and it didn't. Where was I going to fall? Maybe roll over and hit my head on the snow but I dont think that would've hurt me.
The only thing I regret on this trick photo is not laying the other direction so the shadow was going downward. I guess I was pretty tired if I didn't notice that.
