Ok All,

The Southern Loop at Salem Hills / Harmon Park are now open for your riding pleasure. Please come out and give them a try and help hold back the growth of the Wildflowers.

Please leave comments, questions, concerns, recommendation as feed back to this post.

Directions to trail.

The Trailhead is located at Salem Hills Park in Inver Grove Heights. Just south of 494 between the Robert Street and Hwy 52 Exits.

The trailhead is at the Gold Star Locationon the map below.

http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=93&stc=1

At this time the Complete trail is not finished and thus We do not have an accurate trail map. We hope to have the loop done by the end of the year.

As you face west from the parking lot, the trailheads are just south of where the blacktop trail turns down toward the tennis court.

The Northern Entrance leads to the trail that was built last year during the Hot Spots Program. It heads north though the woods behind the Tennis courts. It dead ends in the Balckberry fields but can be linked back to where you started using the mowed neighboorhood trails.

The Southern Entrance is tricky. Head down it for about 50 feet and you will come to a crossing, if you go straight it will dead end in about 80 feet. Back at the crossing and head south.

As you start down the hill toward the pond, the trail will split. This the start of the southern loop. Go RIGHT!!! West and follow the trail loop around Counterclockwise. This southern loop totals about 3.0 miles at this time and when the northern loop is complete we should have a total of about 5. We hav not yet completed the Boardwalk on the east side of the pond so after the downhill on the way back north be carefull.

Multiple laps are the thing to do here, Cadence and speed can be kept very high due to the openess and flow of the trail, along with long sightlines. Sharp corners were kept at a minimum and only included where needed to slow a rider down. There is one section of easy to ride rocks, more like paving then anything, and no obstacles in this trail.

This trail was built as beginner to intermediate trail though the fast you go the harder it will get. Technically there is nothing much harder than the beginner loop at Lebnanon, however there is more climbing and tighter singletrack involved.

Thanks again to all who came out and helped to get this trail built, and hopefully everyone will enjoy a change of pace with the type of riding this trail provides.

Just remember, we still have some work to do here and improvements to make to both the trailhead, northern trail, boardwalks, and signage, so give us the time we need to polish it up before you really hammer us.

Please get ahold of me if you have any questions, ideas, etc.

I made it out to Salem on saturday afternoon around 6pm. Nobody else was there. I used my outback tracking skills to follow the tire tracks of the earlier riders :D . Rode the north section first then found the southern loop and rode it clockwise. It seemed like a fast trail, sand in some of the corners at speed was a bit sketchy. Glad I was SS as I suspect a derailer would clogg pretty quick I imagine with all that wild flower/shrub growth. The pile of rocks under the trees in the field look like a good spot for a mid trail rest area. Like you said not technical but fast and fun.

Looking to ride the trail this week. What are the conditions wet or dry? Did you guys get tons of rain Monday night?

Thanks in advance

Trail is great to ride.

Rain did not cause any issues except for maybe a little soft on the east side of the pond.

If you are going to ride after 4:00pm let me know and I'll come ride with you.

Rode two laps at Salem today. Pretty new biker, took me about 20 minutes per lap. The trail is definitely tight in spots, with very tall weeds and whatnot, but is generally fun to ride.

Ran into MORC board member Scott in between laps, and we chatted. We decided to link up for a second lap, but he found a little whoop-de-doo in the trail that sent him airborn, then over the bars. This was pretty close to the trailhead. With a tire that pinched itself flat, and lacking a pump, he hiked back while I finished up the lap.

The only other area trail I've ridden is Lake Elmo, so I can't compare this to much, but it's definitely tighter and much more winding. So here are some random thoughts:

* There's a lot of sand in places.
* Just before the bridge with the railings, there's two trees to ride between that are too close for my rookie comfort.
* Not too far before that is a descent that ends in a hard left. The first lap nearly found me in the bushes, and even during the second lap, my back tire slid around. I guess I need to slow down even more.
* It's a deceptive climb back up to the trailhead once you've completed the loop. The other climbs didn't nail me too hard, but that one sure did.

Overall, fun ride. I'd go back.

I will for sure ride it again. I think I might even ride it today.

Yeah Kit, that was me. I did eat it very early into it coming out of the parking lot.

Kit, it looks like we rode it backwards. From James's first post, It looks like we were supposed to hang a right and go over the bridge next to the pond right from the get go, rather than at the end of the lap.

James, Will the north bit of singletrack eventually become a loop with the southern loop, or will there always be that out and back main strip?

Anyway, this is a really fun trail. I imagine once it get some more riders and gets packed in, this could be one of the fastest courses in the metro. Great job making the most out of the wooded sections. Super fun rolling contour riding.

With all of the grass, ticks could be a concern. I did end up picking one off the back of my leg on the drive home after my unintended roll in the grass.

Great work James and crew. This is a fun trail!

Oops. I guess the only thing to do would be to go back and ride it again, the right way! :D

Yep,

Once we complete the Northern Loop it will make a complete loop with the southern trails. This is why the southern loop should be written counter clockwise as that is how it will be ridden once the northern loop is completed and hooked in.

Excellent! I rode the northern portion, and looped it into the southern part and wound up with about 3.6 miles of trail.

What's the thoughts for grass control? Are we going to let riders beat it in, or will we devote some effort to trimming/mowing it?

I think the plan is to get the DR Mower over there and go through with it and then maybe run a swath of Roundup along the trail tread to kill off the seads that got planted in it last fall.

Right now it is a little wild out there and we are working to bring it under control.

We are looking to have about a 5 mile loop when we are all done building.

Let me know when you're going to go out and do some grass control. I'd be happy to help.

Are you guys still working towards a connected north south loop? Or is that a next phase of the project for later on?

At this time the Connection is dependent on the Grant which we were given. However; that money is not available until october so we are kinda doing some planning right now.

The connection is mapped and the corridor has been flagged, but right now we are kinda on hold.

I'll put a post up on here when I have a date for foliage control.

Took my brother out for his first look at Harmon this past weekend and he liked it. It is different than all the other metro trails, so it's kinda fun! Once it's all broken in, it will be pretty fast! I actually think it rode better last Saturday than the weekend before when it was opened! I think some riding and rain has helped out somewhat. Can't wait till the brush is trimmed, although that will take some of the challenge away!
