I do believe my friend Lance K. is the first to break his arm at Wirth. 30 seconds into our ride, he endoed down a rather mellow hill. Compound fracture. Not pretty.
I think it would be an excellent idea to map a grid and have numerous maps on the trail. There was no way I could have directed the EMS to where we were.
At first he was in a daze and repeatedly tried to get up. I had my phone in one hand and was holding him down with the other. If I wouldn't have been able to leave to direct them to him, I shudder to think what would have/could have happened.
I had a mechanical at Lebanon once and had a heckuva hike out. I'm pretty damned convinced that these parks need excellent maps and grid markers.
What needs to happen for this to take place?

Actually, Bob Brown compound fractured his left arm last year.
We have a plan in the works to mark all the trails for emergency access. MPRB is in charge of 911 mapping, and we will eventually designate access areas and have trail markers for GPS waypoints. This trail is a work in progress, and will be worth the effort. Speaking of which; we could always use help on Wednesdays at 5 PM for trail work. That would free up a little time for some of the detail jobs, such as emergency planning, signage, education; get my drift?

We have actually been talking to the park patrol with Dakota about getting better markings on the trail for this purpose. They have a number of incidents where a rider has been unable to explain their location...especially since not all parks patrol or city (responding to 911) have even been back there.

We are talking about expanding the marker posts and putting numbers on all carsonite signs (those brown MORC signs). Then the city and county would have maps with their locations - perhaps even with GPS coordinates on them... a rider simply says "I'm at or near post G4" and they can get there. Dakota can work to map out the best way to get in and out with equipment.

More on this soon....
