I am organizing trailwork at Hillside for this Thursday around 6pm in order to clean up the trail for the races. ANY help would be great. It will be mostly cutting overgrowth and cleaning debris off the trail. If you have a weedwhip or any other useful tool please come. Also, I'm looking for a trained trail maintanance person so I don't mess something up.. :p Again, please come out and help.

I'll see what I can do about staying there, but if I can't I could probably atleast drop off a weed whip... if it fits in my car:P

Cool, that would be great, it would be even better if you could help! ;) Well, it doesn't appear that there will be to many ppl there but we can get the job done. I'll be heading out early, like 5ish, to take a spin around the track. I'll mark what areas need work and at 6 we'll start. I've got one weedwhip that works and another that has a broken gas cable. :geek: We'll also need some trimming equipment to get those low branches. Here are a couple of e-mails from Kevin Lennon. I hope to see a few more ppl out there besides Paul, myself, and maybe Andy. Maybe someone riding will stop to help.. Well, if you have any questions let me know, else I'll see ya out there!
Hi Ryan,
We didn't have plans to clear before the Biathlon race. We've been
focusing on Milaca since it is drying out a little.
If you would like to spend some time at Hillside clearing the overgrowth
it would be greatly appreciated. In the past when clear overgrowth
we've clear on the high side of the slope and outside of turns.
Clearing in this fashion discourages people from riding lower & lower on
sideslopes or cutting corners too much.
I took out the logs since many were diagonally across the trail or in
corners.
Thanks,
Kevin Lennon
Hi Ryan,
Appreaciate the assistance. A couple things we were going to focus on
was giving the trail a haircut (weedwacking along the tread) and
trimming back the face wackers. If you could trim the face wackers back
far enough so they don't need continual attention would help greatly. A
hand trimmer should work fine for this.
We will rent a brush mower and get the trail surface after July 10.

P.S. You'll wana wear pants and some type of long sleeve shirt. The bugs will be bad. I'll have some mosquito dope. Bring any trimming equipment you have.

I think I might hit the trail up around that time also, if you're gonna ride for sure let me know what time and Maybe we can hook up. I'll be driving a 90 subaru legacy with a big dent in the front:( gotta check see if the weed whip will fit yet, but otherwise I also have an 18v sawzall I can bring.

Well, Andy and I did a little trail work, Paul had a sick kid. Not as much as I hoped to.. We cleared some of the trails head wackers and whipped the overgrown grass under the power lines. If I'm back from WI Monday I plan on going back and trying to get more done, durring the day. Dang bugs! There were so bad in the woods so I didn't stop for long.
One guy stopped and talked to us. I told him about the races and what not. He thanked us for doing trailwork, that was nice. And another guy even asked us if he could ride while we were doing trailwork, nice of him.
All in all, good work, need more. Not sure if you'll notice a whole lot but every little bit counts. Hope to see you at the races!
P.S. I think Blast is planning trailwork sometime after the 10th. I'll get more details.
Thanks for taking the initiative and doing the work you guys!
I was a regular helping Bob and the Blast crew a few years ago but have not had much time free lately to help on any of their trailwork sessions. Maybe I'll be able to make the next one that is coming up.
Thanks again for your work. And as you said, it's always nice when people that are out riding take the time to stop and appreciate your work.

I went out and did more trailwork today at Hillside, 5 hours worth. Had to leave before storms blew in. Went out with a set of clipers, weed whip, and a can of bug spray (used half! :crazy2: ). I got three quarters done, to the power lines. Just have the last section to do. You'll notice some weed whipping if you go.. Dang it takes forever to walk around that trail! Anyway, now I'm freaking tired. Had McD's afterwards, lots of McD's. lol
Well, just thought I'd let you know I cleared some more brush. Let me know if you notice some more spots which need clearing. Hope to see some of ya at the race tomorrow, if the rain holds. I did see a few people today and a MORC member, didn't catch a name though. Who are ya??

Great Job Panman! Trail work is hard but very rewarding. It must be especially hard all by yourself! I haven't been up that way yet this year, maybe I should try to get up there!
